"They were well off long before we got to them."
Finding the disembodied voice of a young man was hard for her. The great leader of the Interstellar Covenant always thought she was insane. Hearing the voice of her mentor in her head. She'd long forgot that she was a natural Bahn. A priesthood of the Nadian race which ruled Costellon and her protectorates in Ancerious.
Sitting in her mentor's stateroom aboard the magnificent King of Kings, Jaquelin Mass was on her way to view the recently recaptured territories of Libert'e, Hao; and Praetor. Her flagship, the small King of Kings, was the largest civilian ship in the Milky Way. The most luxurious a democratically elected leader could afford; and by far the most protected vessel headed into Ancerious at this hour. With six massive battle groups and three capital ships.
Jaquelin looked around the brightly lit quarters. She was admiring her picture card, which had a photo of the one time mentor Isaac Thomas Riley, and his brothers in Amani Unus. Just three days before Isaac's assassination. "Did you hear me?" The voice was starting a conversation.
Jaquelin was sure now she was going insane. She looked in the direction she heard the voice in Isaac's Stateroom.
The ancient looking kitchen.
Somehow, someone is playing a trick on her. Perhaps a political rival, or Hector. He loved playing tricks, but this was low. Even for him. Jaquelin settled on the latter. "I know it's you, Hector. Quit playing these games!" She shouted.
"I fancy him. Great mind. Great mind indeed. My best friend even on the lowest occasions. Took you in as his wife, I see?"
Her skin went cold. Somehow Jaquelin had forgotten her heritage. Somehow, after all these troubles, she had forgotten who she was.
But who was she, and how could the dead speak to her? Even now?
"I'm not dead, my child." The voice responded. Apparently it could read her thoughts.
Getting up, Jaquelin set down her picture card and turned it off. This incident could make any mind weak. It could turn anyone insane. But now she knew. The library. The Apostolic Library, said to be the birthplace of the Bahns, was speaking to her. She knew only actions could reply to the disembodied voice. A voice that once belonged to her mentor. Now deceased. Or was he? What other secrets has Uliye, her current mentor, kept from her?
"Jaquelin." She looked at the door. Hector was standing by it smiling. "They need you on the bridge."
Jaquelin and Hector took a short walk to the bridge, and on the way, she thought. "Hector," She began tensely. "Do you know anything about the Apostolic Library?"
Hector smiled. "Yes," he said. "The Segonites say that the library is a portal to the base dimension. To the place where all things began. It can awaken the spirit, heal the lame; and see the future. It is a gift to the Nadians by way of the Prayer Nation." She thought a bit and then stopped.
The spacious bridge of the King of Kings was a blue room with a hologram desk in the center of it and computer mainframes on the edges. The front of the bridge was a series of plasma windows that allowed the viewer to look out into the void of space. Uliye practically lived in this room. She knew, because she often wandered in here to talk to him.
Jaquelin stood behind the hologram table. Looking at the ship's trajectory through the cosmos. On route to Hao. The trip would take another day. Then it is tours, more tours and speeches followed by more reassuring speeches of the coming war. She might even get a chance to walk down the Hao's famous Piazza. A wide stretch of beach near the planet's equator. That's if her cramped schedule can afford the time.
For once, she and Hector had beaten Uliye to the bridge. "Jaquelin," he shouted. Jaquelin looked up from the hologram. "There's little to say now that you've figured it out." Beamed a proud Uliye. "Trip is almost complete. We've also received news that our escort ship has arrived at the borders of Tenebrae. " Uliye was beaming. "I feel we can make good on our trade agreements now."
So that's what he wanted to say? Jaquelin was tense as she asked him her question. "Uliye," She began. Thinking. "Do you know anything about the Apostolic Library?" Everyone on the bridge looked at her. Uliye's smile was wiped clean from his face. Now a pale shade of brown, and he looked at the shorter girl. Frowning. "You've been getting the whispers too, haven't you?"
Jaquelin looked up at him. "Yes," she said in a shocked tone. "Is he back. I mean, really back or am I going insane?"
Jaquelin's eyes popped out of her socket a bit. She was almost pleading. "We have no way of knowing if he's physically back. He sounds cheerful. Almost at peace. He's telling us not to worry. Everything will be alright." Uliye's voice was reassuring. "He tells me he fancies my husband," Jaquelin said, annoyed. "He says Hector's got a great mind." Hector was behind Jaquelin, looking slightly annoyed and confused. "Well I'm sure he would," Uliye began. "Hector was Isaac's best friend." As Uliye walked over to hug Jaquelin, she pushed him back slightly. "He says he's not dead!" She said, almost shouting. As if to plead with Uliye that he heard the same thing. "He can read my own mind!" She was looking at Uliye. "I don't know what to say, Jaquelin." Uliye said. "Perhaps you should get some rest?"
Jaquelin looked around. Hector, Uliye; and everyone else on the bridge were looking at her, worried.
She looked down at Her nose. "Okay," she said. As Hector went to put his arm around her, she smiled at him. "You believe me?"
Hector looked at her in a stern manner. "Of course." He said. As Jaquelin walked back into Isaac's former stateroom, she sat down on the bed. She turned on the picture card to find Isaac's picture. Him and his brothers were smiling and laughing. An impromptu picture for sitting heads of states at the time.
She thought hard. "Don't think so hard my dear," said the disembodied voice. "I am always with you."
She looked up and screamed.
Standing in front of her in a white suit with gold glasses and a white peaked cap; was Isaac Thomas Riley. Flesh and blood.
