0600 Hours, Xian Standard Time
Above Tau Severus Pass, Tau Volaris
Tau Volaris' atmosphere was an opaque mess of dust and debris, hiding the first of the landers. Dropships of 5th Battalion, 1st Brigade Detachment B from the Minevan 4th Heavy Infantry plummeted through the deadly dust storm, trying to ride it down as a sort of cover, savoring their advanced concealment as long as they could. On the other end, they could not know what to expect.
Outside the atmosphere, a single Charon-Class troop transport was their headquarters ship. The bridge crew received a simple transmission:
"Alfa and Beta breaching storm; count is twenty by twenty."
Having lost no ships in the storm, the twenty armored dropships emerged in the skies of Tau Volaris. In moments, contacts lined their displays.
---
As the Capitol men and women waited below at the town just outside of Tau Severus pass it wasn’t long before the comms were announced “Enemy, Incoming drop troops! Light them up!” At the signal men rushed back to their guns, massive AA cannons, small lighter rapid fire emplacements, beam emitters and larger heavier deployed Tachyon Cannons for AO purposes, manned by both their own troops and the locals to stop any sort of flanking drops opened fire on the churning lightning filled skies as the first fiery streaks of the Minevans made their descent, filling the sky with choking flank, beams and more as explosions detonated high in the atmosphere. The small pods were violently ripped apart as the flashes of explosions ripped into the skies, shrapnel and concussive blasts smashing pods open or causing them to violently veer into unsafe courses and smash into the ground killing the occupants. The larger landers that came down we targeted by the Tachyon Cannons, the humming of their giant capacitor arrays filling the air before discharge, the yellow streaks piercing the ships causing them to either explode in massive flashes of light, shrapnel and bodies or to just simply loose structural integrity and be ripped apart by the winds, their hulks crashing down onto the plains below. As some pods and forces reached lower levels the lighter guns opened up, installations with missile systems and twin 30mm Gatling cannons lit up the sky with tracers, cutting pods and people apart with wild abandon as missiles arced up to impact larger targets.
It was a massacre. Clean and simple, the drop had failed and the first wave had been virtually wiped out. As the Capitol forces reloaded and deheated their emplacements some light scouts were sent out to survey the wrecks, and kill survivors. While the main defense waited for a possible follow up attack.
---
Captain Kisoon activated the atmospheric seal on his helmet, leaning out of the rear hatch of the hefty dropship, making its final takeoff preparations in the mothership's hangar. Alfa and Beta company had gone dark; not a trace of a sensor or beacon could be picked up; active or destroyed. With those two gone over a minor landing sight, Canary and Dragon company were being sent as reserves. As the battalion commander, Kisoon decided to drop with Dragon. Lining the lengthy hangar, he could see two Fausts being driven into the rear of another transport, along with a pair of Hellions loading up to be launched from the catapult deck.
Kisoon took a deep breath, before activating the controls of the hatch next to him, causing the gaping maw of the landing craft to close up and seal the atmosphere within. This was his first major combat drop, along with quite a few of the men in 5th Battalion.
In mere minutes, Dragon and Canary company launched into space, leaving the hangar behind for their descent into the dense storms of Tau Volaris.
---
There was a few minutes of lull on the surface, aside from the strong gusts and crackle of the flaming debris of what was once the Minevan landing force. Though, amongst the rocky wastes, something was moving. A few Minevan marines were moving about, trying to move the slag and debris about to get to their comrades within the wreckage. Amongst other things, their armor looked worse for wear.
---
The various Capitol defenses slowly reloaded and checked their weapons for any wear, the commanders overseeing the lines as the infantry had also taken cover and fortified the town, any armour they had taking up positions ready for any serious drop the enemy may make again. As the various weapons scanned the sky tracking for any new targets, a pair of Raptor gunships took off from a nearby airstrip set up by Capitol, their engines howling as they went to help the scouts scan the wreckage, the sound of rapid fire weapons could just be heard over the wind as some remaining survivors were spotted and gunned down.
The few jeeps crammed with soldiers scanned the wastes and the wreckage, with such a wide area to cover some of the survivors clearly got away but the jeeps kept driving, soldiers jumping off here and there to check pods and pieces of landing craft.
---
Around one of the wrecks, the survivors numbered about twenty. They weren't able to locate much, but luckily were able to find basic equipment and a set of HM-3 ATGM launchers. Over the heavy weather, they could hear occasional bursts of small arms fire and the roar of engines. Let alone no comms could break the atmosphere and all was silent.
---
Kisoon had made his way to the cockpit of the shuttle, peeking over the Warrant Officer's shoulder to read the displays. Everything started normal, but slowly began to descend. The holo-displays flickered momentarily, before rebooting altogether. Canary company's dropships were nowhere to be found on the sensors, after that. A droplet of sweat beaded on his forehead, and he tried to run a minor refresh on the displays. Still nothing. The landing force picked up speed, causing a trembling in the cabins of the craft from the tension
A fireteam of Hellions in variable mode broke the storm layer, letting their momentary scans run and their displays fill up with hundreds upon hundreds of enemy contacts; each highlighted by a tiny red diamond. A pair split from the team, speeding towards the makeshift airfield. Their sleek jet frames skidded but ten meters from the ground, kicking up massive black clouds in their wake.
---
“Second wave inbound open fire!” Came the command as once again the sky was filled with blasts and shells. The various guns opening up like before and prioritising targets as the forces garrisoning the town readied themselves for a tough fight should they land. Near the airfield the defences close by tried to target the Hellions, a pair of dual 30mm rotary cannons opened up with a cascade of shells towards the targets trying to protect the few gunships still on the field. The Tachyon Cannons once again charging capacitors as they targeted the enemy dropships the FTL beams flying out to meet the second wave.
As the scouts spread out the jeeps pulled up “Lifesigns! 700 meters over that dune!” One of them called out as the small Capitol squad charged over the hill weapons raised.
---
Several small hatches on the bottom of the Hellion slid open as 30mm shells slammed into the angular E-Carbon plating of its sides, leaving little more than dents and chunks to scar its side.
In response, dozens of small missiles escaped its hatches, guiding themselves to designated targets and enemy markers in a matter of moments. The second Hellion followed suit, dropping its initial payload across the enemy occupied area. Wherever the missiles hit would go up in a fountain of shrapnel and a well of incendiaries.
Kisoon watched his display light up, as tachyons shot by him and flak lined the skies underneath them. Canary company was still nowhere to be found. The storm had swallowed them whole. He climbed his way from the cockpit back to the staging area, where the command platoon was awaiting him. Secured in place were a set of Susanooh IFVs, all loaded for bear. All that was left was closing the gap.
---
"Contacts, nine o'clock!" A Junior Sergeant, the highest ranking NCO left alive called out to those around him. The remnants of Alfa company took up positions, using wreckage and a rocky berm as cover and firing positions. All they could see were silhouettes with slight color, but their HUDs read the foreign equipment as Capitol. They brought their weapons to bear, firing accurate semi-automatic shots from their service rifles, while the automatic gunners tried to suppress the enemy with short bursts.
---
The positions targeted by the Hellions exploded, with one position only loosing a gun as it kept firing its barrage, launching a missile as it did so. As the other defences kept up the attack some turned to engage the hellions some large auto cannons turned and started to rake the area with explosive shells. The Tachyon Cannons starting to aim for the transports closest to the ground, the capitol commanders screaming to stop the landings. The engines of the Capitol MBTs gunning up ready to engage. Along with infantry running out into pre-dug trenches ready to receive an enemy attack.
The Capitol soldiers running over the ridge expected disorientated enemies found a determined resistance, some being cut down by fire as they fired their own weapons and charged down the slope, the had no choice, no cover and a downward slope meant frontal charge was the only option, the jeep pulling up to the ridge edge with some left over men and firing onto the Minevan positions to pin them.
---
The Hellion pilot's warning lights went rampant, his display reading an incoming signal with distance dropping fast. Once the counter hit '0', the missile impacted, shearing the rear thrusters from his craft. The Hellion spun wildly in a nosedive, slamming into the flaming airfield and sharing a similar fate to what was left of the grounded gunships.
The second Hellion dodged the wall of autocannon shells by switching to its humanoid form and counterthrusting. Its rifle brandished, it began to engage gun emplacements. The second pair of Hellions were gunning it towards the Tachyon Cannons, ignoring hails of enemy flak altogether. The enemy gun, albeit inaccurate, had already completely destroyed two of Dragon Company's dropships. The pilots fired their complements of Arbalest missile pods and 120mm cannons in more accurate bursts, in hopes of levying some attention from the landing craft.
Alfa company's vigor was increased, seeing Hellions trace the sky in the distance. Upon spotting a gunship, one of the Minevan missilemen got a lock, firing off a guided, high explosive projectile to hunt the craft. The Junior Sergeant tried to get comms working, pinging themselves with friendly IFFs so they wouldn't get bombed themselves. He also needed to know just how many enemy contacts were assailing their position, and from where. They didn't exactly have all-around security.
All of the marines amongst the dropships silently waited within their vehicles, to be dropped from a low strafe. It was a matter of a minute before the show started.
---
The weapons systems kept firing as the shells and missiles impacted the first of the Tachyon Cannons capacitors. The resulting explosion engulfing not only the gun but several other positions around it, plus Capitol troops and the Hellion, the shockwave knocking people off their feet in the surrounding area. Troops began to bring up ATGMs and began to fire missiles at the damage Hellion as the automated turret kept up its attack. The tanks and men in the trenches now taking long range shots at the forces that had started to land, tank rounds and rifle/semi automatic fire now flitting tracers over the dunes.
The gunship registered the launch however the missile still impacted its starboard wing, sending the craft into a slow descend to crash softly on the ground. The other coming swiftly around and firing a barrage of rocket pods into the area of the launch. The troopers still racing down the hill combat knives drawn as they got in close to the Minevan troopers.
---
The Junior Sergeant was caught off guard with an empty weapon. A Capitol soldier rushed him with an impressive battle cry, causing him to reach for his tanto. His heart sank as he found his scabbard empty, and he quickly lashed out with the butt of his rifle. The Minevans made a fighting retreat towards the downed landing craft, firing their weapons that still had ammunition, some left behind locked in melee combat with the Capitol troopers. Even though they were Minevan marines, they were all mostly fresh out of training, still green as could be. The remnants of Alfa were starting to drop, unable to hold the ground.
The blast of the Tachyon completely swallowed the Hellion, leaving only the original pair alive. Sustained AA fire was taking its toll on the tough fighters, who were doing their best to take care of the Tachyon Cannons. Their paint and armor was slowly being whittled away as they raced over enemy positions and unleashed hell.
Captain Kisoon strapped himself into the Susanooh IFV along with the rest of the squad, as the maw of the landing craft opened up. The safeties released the command platoon; 4 IFVs dropped from about thirty meters in the air, left behind by the flaming dropship. Before the vehicles even touched down, the hefty dropship burst into flames, barreling hundreds of meters to the flank and burying itself in the desert. After they'd landed and begun their advance towards enemy positions, several other landing craft in the company touched down, unloading their compliment of Orochi LACs. The cavalry had begun their advance, using the naturally shifting hills as general cover and concealment. One platoon of 9 Orochis altered its path, heading towards the signal of Alfa's survivors.

KISOON'S REPORT
A MINOR THREAT LANDING ZONE HAS TURNED OUT TO BE A HEAVILY GUARDED SECTOR, WITH CAPITOL ARMOR AND HEAVY WEAPON EMPLACEMENTS DUG IN. ALFA AND BETA COMPANY ARE COMBAT INEFFECTIVE, WITH ONLY A SMALL SURVIVOR CONTINGENT OF ALFA COMPANY HOLDING OUT AGAINST A MASSIVE ELEMENT OF CAPITOL INFANTRY. WE HAVE LANDED ON THE GROUND AND ARE MAKING OUR WAY TOWARDS THE SETTLEMENT.
OUR OBJECTIVE IS TO SECURE THE LANDING SITE, DRIVE OFF CAPITAL FORCESS, AND RESTORE COMMUNICATIONS WITH COMMANDANT STRAND. SECONDARY OBJECTIVES ARE TO RESCUE ELEMENTS OF ALFA COMPANY AND DISCOVER THE FATE OF CANARY COMPANY
WE WILL CARRY OUT THE MAIN OBJECTIVE VIA DIRECT ASSAULT; STORM THE CITY AND USE IT AS COVER FROM MAIN BATTERIES. FROM THERE, WE WILL DECIDE OUR NEXT MOVE.
DRAGON COMPANY IS ARMED WITH A COMPLEMENT OF SUSANOOH IFVS, OROCHI LACS, AND VARIOUS SMALL ARMS. THERE ARE TWO HELLIONS STILL OPERABLE AND ENGAGED IN SUPPORT OPERATIONS.
I WILL BE COMMANDING THE SURVIVORS OF 5TH BATTALION THROUGH SHORT-RANGE COMMUNICATIONS, AS THERE ARE NO LINKS WHATSOEVER TO ANYTHING PAST BATTALION COMMAND.
