Arragan System: Dead system, Union patrol fleet 23
Captain Alenko sat somewhat straighter than usual, the light cruiser hummed as it went through slipspace. Just a routine patrol but Alenko knew this was dangerous territory. Months before fighting between Tenebrae and the IE had reduced this system to a husk of its former self, and the Union was patrolling to ensure no pirate factions turned up to scavenge the remains. The helmsman called out "Time to arrival 10 seconds" Alenko nodded, his dark features wide with readiness. He commanded two other ships, all Kunai class, a hunter killer fleet, more than able to deal with scavengers. The alarm went as the ship lurched forward slightly, its form flashing out of FTL. Data steams buzzed as sensor readings came in from the system, it was the sensor operator who called out first "Captain! I’m reading massive fleet signatures of an unknown design as well as some sort of huge capital ship!" Alenko looked with shock and walked over to the screens eyes wide "What in the name of creation!" The screens showed a few thousand vessels surrounding some sort of gigantic space station parked in orbit. If that was strange enough the dead world readings had been replaced with life signs on the surface, the planet was green... with life. How was that even possible? "Alright I want everyone ready, go to defensive formation and raise shields but do not prep weapons. This is first contact scenarios, open a channel to the fleet" The coms officer nodded as he sat back in the captain’s chair "This is Captain Vas Alenko of the Union of Worlds, I come in peace, please identify yourself"
The citadel's extended range sensors had picked up on the unknown targets, wasting no time analysing them from range, while the fleet turned to face the unknown targets. A gigantic psychic spark would show up on radar, as the legion fleet mentally synchronised - but noticing the Union crafts' numbers and weapons lowered, only a single one came forth. A small halcyon swordship, which produced odd alterations to the gravitational fields as it rode towards them.
The citadel remained in position, continuing to revive the world with what seemed to be a wide mixture of magic, nanotechnology, biological engineering and psychic. Large humanoid robots were "mindforging" the land... There was a lot showing on radar. And a lot of drones, some small as bugs.
A communication was sent back to the Captain. Three audio "beeps", followed by...
It was series of beeps. With "gaps" between them. But anybody with enough understanding of chemistry science would realise what these were.
The aliens were responding by a basic code of chemistry - using sounds to communicate the table of elements. Ingenious - every species would understand these. But this also meant the 7th legion didn't understand the Union's language. Or weren't able to respond.
They sent, after that, what seemed to be a radio feed - but the UOW's ship, and the 7th legion's fleet, were not using the same data encoding, let alone language.
Yet, they seemed to push for a transit of data.
Alenko monitored the situation as the bustling crew received the data and processed some of the information. The basic chemistry language was textbook in communication and the communication specialists made a reply in short order, also putting together a very small tight information bundle with the Unions language and some brief information. They kept their weapons powered down and shields up, hopefully they wouldn’t make any sudden aggressive actions. Alenko also kept an eye on sensors as they scanned the planet the teeming abundance of life baffling the Specialists.
“They are advanced whoever they are” One said.
“Indeed let’s hope they can be allies” Alenko replied.
The data received was a godsend - providing enough information to enter in the 7th legion battle grid consciousness's translation protocols, where they were able to fairly quickly catalogue their language, and basic programming and communication rules and protocols.
A small, single, weak psychic "shockwave" rang throughout the alien fleet - not reaching far, but with very high frequencies and intensity. VERY similar to the one which would have shown up on radar at a galactic scale around the time of the Ancerious council.
It wouldn't likely take much for anyone to piece two and two together - The loud psionic "outcry" detected a few months was of... these people.
"Greetings, and good tidings. We are the Halcyon Empire. 7th legion clan. We welcome you. We mean you no harm."
The voice was that of... It seemed to be multiple voices... They spoke clearly, and with clarity.
Upon closer look, the large "citadel" was "wrapped" in its fleet - its surface torn up, yet parts bending into place. And the work upon the planet went on unhindered.
The citadel was in low orbit, and below it seemed to be held by psychic and gravitational field’s large tendril "debris".
Alenko and his crew breathed a collective sigh of relief as the first coms message came through, he immediately opened the coms and replied “It is good to know you wish peace 7th Legion Clan. We did not expect to meet you at this location, this system was destroyed by war. We were sent here to stop scavengers but instead we find your people. You are… terraforming this world?” He asked, it was very rare to find such terraforming going on in a recently deserted warzone indeed.
"This is correct. We are gardeners. We pave way for the younger life. As we have done for eons. "
The fleet seemed to have an extensive, continuous, wide psychic network, and a huge stream of data going in between each ships.
Alenko nodded "I see, interesting. Perhaps our peoples could learn more from each other. The Union desires peace and co-operation between all peoples, perhaps we could discuss potential agreements or co-operation?"
"We would be happy to undergo such pursuits at time which will favour you best. We shall send you a packet. Mostly a beacon, but we may also store within it any information you may wish to provide your leaders with."
"We wish to know more of your people, any information you deem fit would be greatly welcome."
Alenko smiled "Of course" He gestured to the communications specialist and the intelligence specialists "Get a data package prepped standard first contact and tight beam it across" The men nodded and in a few minutes it was set. The tight beam contained the Unions history as well as outlined who they were and what they strived for. He hoped it would be enough to persuade them.
The beam was copied, analysed, and sent through decoding.
"Data has been received, and will soon be studied. Sending beacon."
A small inertia propelled object was sent at low velocity towards the Union ships, a crystalline, "blinking", dog sized "egg" was sent towards them. Without any specific information, the legion simply sent social, diplomatic and territory information, as well as stations, neutral routes, trade zones, and so on.
The most interesting thing of the beacon, however, was that it was made of seemingly nanoorganic crystals, and that it was powered by what seemed to be, rather than "batteries", a small nanocarbon tube capacitor, which was storing a huge energy by employing the large surface area. A clean, instantly near instantly charged battery, cheap, and very economically and ecologically friendly!
Alenko received the news as the docking bay team received the object, the scientists had been over it in seconds, almost pushing the docking crew out the way. He smiled at least it wasn’t a bomb. He was somewhat disappointed he had nothing of worth to give back to the gracious 7th Legion, but this gift he had received had and would be seen as a great thing in the Union “I apologise but we don’t have anything we can give you in return, is there anything we can do for you?” He asked.
"Yes, you can. But you would find this to also benefit you in the future : Do not colonize the worlds we have terraformed for at least twelve thousand years. You are free to set research labs and outposts to study and learn from nature, but we ask you not to alter or harm the living's development."
Alenko nodded “Of course I will forward that to command, we will most likely research but not disturb you have our word on that matter. I was going to ask, may it be possible to organise a proper diplomatic meeting between our peoples in the future? Face to face of course, in both our intrests. We have much we can learn from each other”
"As we have said, this meeting can occur at the leisure of your leaders, by using the beacon. The beacon is a communication and instant teleportation tool which will make this plausible, and at your leaders' leisure."
Alenko smiled and bowed slightly “Excellent, we will be leaving to deliver and report this news back to command. I will tell my leader about this device in my official report, he will then organise something and our people will use the beacon to contact you again for something more official” He saluted, banging his fist on his chest “It has been an honour representatives of the 7th Legion Clan and I hope to hear great things between our nations soon” Alenko cut the link and smiled, the atmosphere of the bridge was one of excitement and elation. As the small hunter killer fleet moved back towards the edge of system he knew that here today, something amazing had been founded.
The 7th legion's patriarch and matriarch would wait eagerly for this meeting, as the global, synchronised consciousness ceased, each halcyons returning to their individual, independent minds. As if on cue, the citadel began to rise off, the terraforming of the last planet of this system having completed, the 7th legion ships moving on as well, warping out at the same time.
