"Singapura Singapura
Negara kekal masa,
Tetap kita berpadu
Singapura jadi satu"
(Singapore Singapore
Nation immortal in time,
Forever will we unite
Singapore shall be one)
~ Lagu Negara, 1st Verse
----------------------------------------
The snow plains were eerily quiet and quite devoid of any activity of any kind; no plants, no animals and certainly no intelligent lifeforms or activities. There was only the ground, and its cold white blanket of snow. The plains covered an expanse of area, stretching on towards the horizon as if it has no end. Dead silence lingered still in the icy air, stagnant and immobile.
Major Redhan, leading of whatever was left of one of the drop teams, looked over the plains from the hill as his 50-strong men stood behind him, clutching their rifles in anticipation. The Major looked at the greyish-white sky, gazing through the atmosphere at the cosmos waiting for something. He then glanced at his arm computer and looked back up.
The icy sky, once seemingly void of anything, lit up in flames as meteors crashed down from the space above. The squarish crate-like objects with thrusters plastered at its sides for self-propulsion were drop pods containing base modules needed for the establishing a proper outpost. Encased in Lunamite armor, the same material used to make Singapore ship hulls, the bullets and beams from enemy AA were simply deflected away and the space pods were left uninterrupted in flight. Black large craters dotted the quiet snow plains as the pods slammed onto the ground and the impact of it dented through the rock and soil below, and cracked the surroundings. The pods subsequently opened up the protective casing like lotus petals, revealing various components and modules inside that needed to be placed together to form their needed base buildings. The servos whirred to life, and the mechanical arms swiveled around, clutching the modules and putting them together. The other base modules did the same, assembling the building blocks together to construct a building.
The silence did not last long, and the dull bass of artillery fire were heard from a far. Explosions soon came crashing onto the snowy expanse as missiles and shells arched from the faraway horizon where the enemy artillery probably was. Major Redhan snapped back to reality and quickly judged the situation. The base modules were largely intact, but a few were damaged, and the smaller buildings such as small storage depots were completely blown in pieces.
"Kannina-, Shit! Sir! Rebel forces approaching from the front! They're going to attack the base in about...20 minutes!" the soldier with his binoculars shouted. Redhan frowned and panic built up within him. He cannot let them destroy the base. The base was their only chance to get a foothold and extra reinforcements and supplies needed for the war effort on Tau Volaris.
"Form a defensive perimeter in front of the barracks! Those are our vital buildings! Charge! Stop fucking around!"
The Singaporean troops poured down from the hill and rushed to form a firing line in front of the more important buildings, especially the Headquarters as it was their only method of deep space communication to obtain reinforcements and fire support. Scattering into squads of 3 to 5 men, they formed what it seemed like a scattered and jagged line, instead of the neat straight lines that was conventional. The idea was simple; it was to give ample space in between troops so that area of effect weaponry would not take out as much men as it would compared to the tightly packed straight lines and overlapping arcs of fire to wear down more of an enemy offensive. Such firing line also made it easier to retreat and regroup.
The enemy had not only far more troops, but also now they came with mechanized elements; APCs, IFVs and there were even sightings of tanks within their armored ranks. Some broke off from the main force, and approached from the flanks.
The Singaporeans only had 50 men, whom most are exhausted from fatigue and injured from the initial ambush, and they were armed poorly with rifles, pistols and their machetes. Only few possessed machine guns, sniper rifles and explosive launchers and even they were running low on ammunition to spare. But they had one thing the enemy did not have.
The flag bearer sang his heart out once again.
The crimson flag of Singapore fluttered bravely in the icy air once again, shining light of victory radiant in the face of the strongest odds.
Yes. They had one thing the rebels did not have.
They had the Singapore Spirit on their side.
