It was a nice sunny day, in the middle of a field with the wild flowers in full bloom with a slight breeze into the air.Hargun walked slowly through the field. the scent of the flowers was calming and smelt homely on the light cool breeze. It had been a long time since he had been here... Memories of his long ago childhood rose from his mind. He used to play in fields like these once upon a time. Before the war... before unification. when things had been peaceful and carefree... How he remembered those days. But something was wrong... He felt saddened when he realized he was dreaming. If only he could go back to this field again one day.
Then suddenly, the breeze shifted and the heavy smell of exhaust fumes and a rumbling noise came from the direction of very large hill. The sun turned dark and the sound of tanks could be heard, Hargun raised an eyebrow. This wasnt a normal dream. Then suddenly, from around the left side of the hill came tanks of an unfamiliar design, hundreds of them in an armored spearhead formation. behind them, he noticed another hillside, with thousands of men in defensive positions with tank destroyers and field guns placed ready to defend.
Hargun watched as the beautiful field was trampled by the tanks, they sped past him oblivious to him as the sound of long range gunfire from the defenders opened up. None of the unit designs here were recognisible to him and he had seen a fair few designs and races in his lifetime. This wasnt a normal dream...
No sooner had the tanks past Hargun, they started getting pounded from an ememy just out of his line of sight. As soon as he caught a glimpse of them, he was shocked at the all to familiar sight. Their light blue giving them away.
Hargun watched as the familar fire from the Union of Worlds engaged the unknown forces. Seraphim MBTs and Rapier hover tanks sped into the fray, their railguns and other advanced weapons blazing. Explosions and chaos reined as the battlefield was subjected to artillery barrages and Hargun could swear he could see high in the heavens, obscured by smoke aerial dogfights.
Was this a dream? Or a premonition, after all he had gotten them before...
It was quit obvious that the mystery tanks were no match for their Union counterparts. Still, these inferior tanks fought on like a broom trying to beat back the tides. The smell of cordite and burning oil and fuel came spewing from the burning hulks of downed tanks, Some with crews still trying to escape. Back at the hill, he could see that air strikes were decimating the defensive forces there. Yet withing all this chaos, a voice spoke out to him, " Quite the massacre, isn't it?"
Hargun turned from the chaos to the battle, hearing the strange voice.
"Who are you? Reveal yourself! I am no stranger to the likes of dream beings such as yourself!" He shouted out over the din of battle. Hargun knew this was a preminition, yet he also knew whatever being was inside his dreams was a threat if it could invade his mind.
"Why I'm right here," replied the voice. Hargun turned to his left to see an odd sight. There stood a portly man, standing at about 5 foot 11 inches, he was wearing cloths like that of an 1890's business man, wing tip shoes, spats, and a stovepipe hat. He had a Burnside moustache, his hair was dark grey and his eyes ice blue that those of a husky. "There's no need to worry dear Admiral," said the being," The name's McCallum by the way."
Hargun sighed. It was going to be one of those days.... He turned and came to face the stranger. The battles still raging around them it seemed somehow a background event to the conversation.
"I have never heard of you. Why are you here? How are you inside my head?"
"I come here as a messenger, and me and my associates are known for speaking to people in this way.", replied McCallum.
Harguns eyes narrowed "And what is this message you have come to bring me? If its the images I have been seeing I can guess its some sort of declaration of war?"
"By no means. I came here to prevent the events you've seen here. What you see here is a premonition of sorts, one that can be prevented. One possible out come that keeps coming up over and over again, and me and my associates do not want this to happen." said McCallum sternly. By this point, the carnage in the background had faded into a black void.
Hargun raised an eyebrow. He was somewhat suspcious of this man, though he wanted to prevent this outcome he knew there would be some kind of catch.
"What are you exactly? And what are your accosiates?" Hargun asked, he wanted to know before any more detail was fleshed out.
"Many culture have names for us, but every time a bell rings." McCallum then chuckled. "But I do believe you need a better explanation on why we're here. So here it is. We were sent here by our boss the keep an eye on the lifeforms from or universe who just so happened to stumbled across a portal to this one. We spread out and observed what has been going on. We then reconvened and we didn't like most of the outcomes we ended up with. Most ended with them dieing in the millions. So we looked for some one who could take them under their wing, without using them for nefarious means."
Hargun, still somewhat suspicious rubbed his stubble "I see... So this race has rescently discovered this galaxy? And you forsee them being destroyed?" Hargun thought for a moment "My people are all for making alliances and protecting those who need it, however we need to meet these people before we make any official relations"
"Thus we reach my second point, if you can spare the resources, we'd like you to find them." McCallum then pulled a small paper map out of his coat and unfolded it. It was a basic map of the galaxy. "No we're not quite sure where exactly they are but we believe that they're some where in this general area." The area McCallum pointed out was a large expanse of space Hargun knew that hasn't been explored yet.
Hargun studied the map and nodded "Im sure that can be arranged, however if this is some sort of trap or ploy... I can assure you there is no place you can hide, even if it is in someones dreams" Hargun said still not 100% convinced
"I understand, but there's one more thing. No one can know about this meeting. It's of the utmost importance." said McCallum with a look of true seriousness.
Hargun frowned "So I am to convince high command to explore this area of space based on a hunch? It will be hard but i will see what I can do" Hargun then looked into McCallums eyes "Who and what are you, truly?"
"I'm sure you can find some evidence to support yourself. ad I've already told you who I am. Every time a bell rings. But you need not to worry about that right now, you just need to WAKE UP."
Hargun's eyes shot open.
Hargun put a hand up his head, it hurt slightly. felt like he hadnt slept at all. He got up and dressed into his uniform. Thinking on the dream message of last night Hargun contact the top brass about his new exploration idea.
After all he had a race to find.
