**Unknown System
Phasic Wasteland**
The star was dying. Intense solar flares were a sign of an eventual supernova. Not immediately... at least not on a celestial timescale, but within the next hundred thousand years or now. The star was young, nowhere near the end of it's expected life based upon it's mass.
But the Phasic Wasteland was a home to all that was unnatural.
One of the many spatial distortion zones formed by both the presence of the Aberration and it's presumed destruction had damaged the star somehow, perhaps accelerating it's end either on a quantum or chronodimensional level. The star had no habitable planets, and those that existed were either lacking in valuable minerals or had been mined out ages ago. The star's end would have gone unnoticed, as even
astrophysicists were leery of traversing the Wastelands in order to observe the star. The Phasic Wasteland was not a place for ordinary sapients, it was a place for phantoms, spectres, and things from beyond the veil. And those things came...
Space seemed to shimmer, and the starfield in that area of space changed. Constellations and spectral classes shifting. the distortion took on a rough shape, a gigantic nonagram of lines of light and distorted space. A bright light shone from the top center of the thing, and a blazing blacklight quantum fireball roared in the void under it. Another nonagram of black light was somehow visible within the fireball. Soon after several other ships slowly phased into existence, two other partially made of spatial manifolds like the large station/vessel, the others made of some sort of odd black crystalline material.
The Nyath had come.
Onboard the immense mobile station at the center of the fleet, 5 beings seemed to float in an internal void within the station's dimensional core. Three of them were Nyath, a rare albino white female, and two males with normal black plumage. The other two were Tezekians one male and one female, the only other full member species in the Nyath Dominion. All five floated in the void, languidly flapping their wings as they cast their gazes to a planar spatial distortion that functioned as a kind of data display.
Space resonated as the albino female Nyath-Raptor Queen Lyrielle, linked in communion with her four companions. *Is all in readiness for the test?* The female Tezekian, Gazsi Cseh responded *Yes Raptor Queen, this star is perfect for what we require. The probes have determined that there is no civilization that could possibly be adversely affected by Stage 2 test protocols, or by any... errors in Stage 1.* *Errors?* came the resonance-voice of Ganne T'aleth, one of the male Nyath. *The odds are infinitesimally small, Ganne T'aleth. It is however prudent that I mention them as the probability is not zero. I do believe we can be the saviors of this star* Nodding, Ganne T'aleth responded to the group *The system is secure, and we are unobserved. shall I call in the yardship, Raptor Queen?* An actual physical chirping sound emitted from Lyrielle, and then she resonated. *Yes, tell them to imitate phase-shift and begin deployment of the test array.*
Another ship/station shimmered into the space of the system. Unlike *Aerie of the Nyath* , this was made of the black crystal material the more conventional Nyath ships were. As large as the Mobile Dimensional Base, it's center was a huge construction bay, which held a kind of crystalline spire that shifted hue and brightness constantly. The spire was lowered from the bay by traction beams, and aligned so that it's tip pointed towards the system's flaring primary.
A resonance from the yardship called to the leaders of the Black Gate Consensus aboard the mobile base. *We are ready to begin stage one testing on your command, Raptor Queen* Lyrielle looked towards the display field, and then to the others, all who nodded and resonated in affirmation. *Begin Stage 1 Testing* she resonated to the Project Leader on the yardship.
The spire's glow intensified. The color shifting stopped as the spire took on a deep amber colored glow. A lurid beam of amber light projected from the spire's tip, streaking towards the distant star. Rings of black light started traveling down the main beam, surrounding the beam as it traveled. In approximately 9 minutes the effect struck the star. Nothing seemed to happen at first, but then monitors on the ships and stations started picking up changes in the star's energy emissions. The flare activity seemed to be decreasing, and energy-state sensors indicate a drop in the fusion reaction activity at the core.
The fusion fires at the star's core were slowing, and the spatial affects seemed to be stopping as well. The flares slowly stopped as the beam kept pulsing. Then at a certain point the beam shut off, leaving the star shining in space, free of flares. As the scientists and QTAP Nodes analyzed the sensor results, the Pentarchs started to believe that the tested had been successful, and they had given the dying star a new lease on life. This belief was confirmed by resonances from the scientists and cores that indeed the star had been stabilized and renewed. The Nyath had become the saviors of a star.
*Stage 1 Testing is complete* Raptor Queen Lyrielle resonated to the other Pentarchs. *Then we should move to Stage 2 testing.* Ganne T'aleth resonated. *All is well within expected result parameters.* Looking at the data field, Aadi Kovács, the male Tezekian resonated *I have some misgivings about Stage 2. Do we really need to go forward? We already have a viable defense against the nova trigger technology that the Capitol National Mandate foolishly spread around Ancerious like throwing gasoline on a fire.* Niara, the other male Nyath responded in their link *A defense is very important, I would even say critical. But if our plans are to succeed, we also need offensive capability to match the Crucible weapons and other horrors gestating in labs across the galaxy. Surely you realized this, Aadi Kovács-When you joined us in supporting the rebuilding of the Black Gate and the rest of the Primary Plan?*
Aadi Kovács thought to himself for a while, then shared his though with his fellow Pentarchs. *You are correct, But I feel discomfited at the concept of obliterating entire star systems. How can we teach the Nescient if they are atomized in the shockwaves and plasma flares of their exploding star?* *Your thoughts are valid, Aadi Kovács.* came the resonance of Lyrielle. *I propose therefore that current plans be for the system to be used in defensive mode only, and the offensive capability held in reserve as a deterrent or retaliatory measure only. We shall not use the primary offensive modality in a first strike aspect. The secondary offensive modality does have uses is an operational combat environment though. I agree with Aadi Kovács assessment. Our job is as their teachers, not their exterminators. Affirmation flickered between the 5 Pentarchs, and then Lyrielle resonated to the Project Leader aboard *Aerie-56*. *Begin Stage 2 testing.*
The spire's glow brightened again, the hue once more shifting to amber. The lurid beam and it's blacklight rings once more fired into the star. The QTAP cores carefully watched the state of the fusion reactions in the stellar core as it continued to dampen, reactions suppressed and energy drawn off by the beam and rings.
Sensors observed the star, which was now wobbling and seemingly shrinking. Data feeds informed the now far-distant ships of the effects going on as the star now visibly started to shrink. The fusion reaction in the core had ceased, suppressed by the beam. Without the energy generated by fusion, the battle between the expansion of energy and the force of gravity was swiftly won by gravity. The star started to collapse inwards.
As the star collapsed the matter falling towards the core started to heat. Then at the precise time the amber beam shut off, the nuclear damper ceased suppressing the core’s fusion. As the collapsing material reached near the ignition point for helium fusion the core blazed into life after the damper shut down. The shockwave erupted and struck the incoming material, creating pressure conditions between the inner fusion and out gravitational collapse which initiated the fusion of a great deal of the stellar material. Hydrogen, Helium, and even some carbon fused rapidly. The star erupted in a low-grade supernova, blasting massive amounts of plasma into the system. The shockwave and plasma raced out across the system, volatizing or pulverizing the innermost planets. The outer worlds would “survive”, though the atmospheres of the gas giants had been substantially lessened.
The star’s recently renewed life ended in a blaze of plasma fire and spatial shocks. It’s death a beacon to the galaxy.
Saviors after all, are often destroyers.
Onboard *Aerie of the Nyath*. the Black Gate Pentarchs looked on in awe at the view of the event. Finally Ganne T'aleth resonated *I would say testing has been a complete success, and we are ready to progress on construction.* The others all resonated affirmation, and then Gazsi Cseh resonated *I have a proposal for a name for our new and wondrous horror. I propose we name the carrier vessel for our new system Talon of Lyrielle. And if we are attacked cataclysmically, no star system will be safe from the retaliatory fury of our Raptor Queen.* The others were in affirmation. Lyrielle resonating a sense of both pride and happiness. Orders were sent to the primary construction facility to proceed with the construction of the newly named *Talon of Lyrielle*. The fleet then set course for the Black Gate, with the new nova behind them acting as the pyre for a now dead system.
