Para (Khanate | UDS) — 24/04/2022 15:19
The Socialist Republics of Imaginarium continue to be a persistent interest in the Unified Democratic Systems. Being associated with socialism is always a good way to get their interest. So it is natural for the UDS to reach their interstellar comrades. Reception of the general public was one of pleasant surprise and a slight sense of smugness. The former because truth be told, they were not expecting them and the latter because it only seems their presence proves the superiority of socialist ideology. While Imaginarium is not exactly similar to the UDS in all aspects of life, enough was enough and many of the populace seems keen to make friends with them. Indeed, it was through popular support that Parliament had the Colonial Administration reach out to them to lay down the groundwork for healthy diplomatic relations. Naturally, the process is slow, but they’ll get there eventually. However, the UDS remain cautioned as to how they proceed. Blind optimism is not the path to success after all. And so, one of the first steps proposed to the Imaginese is this; a cultural exchange. Where representatives and delegates of both nations visit a key planet to learn more about each other. With luck, the nations would learn enough about each other’s culture and society to the point where good relations may prosper. Hopefully.

[+][+] Meridian System, Ancerious Galaxy Port Three, Serica Station Orbiting the planet of Serica is a station. Like all stations designed by the UDS it follows a particular aesthetic. Namely, a streamlined and circular ring of dark metal lit up by blue lights. It is a large thing, meant to act as a space port, trade hub, and transport centre for the system and the colonies. Here, goods and travellers from the planet are sent here to await docking ships for their travel to other places throughout UDS space. This is also the place where visiting ships can dock and allow the crew to travel to the planet of Serica. The interior of the station is large and wide, yet decorated in similar black, blue, and silver of UDS fashion. People wander and walk amidst watchful lenses, dealing with the hustle of everyday life. At one of the three space ports, a large group of people have congregated amidst the hustle and bustle of station workers and commuters. They are a large and varied group, ranging from state reporters to security agents, and diplomatic envoys. Most of them wear the dark colours of the UDS state uniform of light to deep grey, often decorated with some stripes of a variety of colours. Some are more fashionable, however, wearing various suits that would not be out of place on 20th century Earth though, like everyone else, their colours are noticeably muted. There are a few civilians of course, mainly spectators though they are quickly vacated by security- either through gentle reminders of the importance of this or a more stern reminder to return to their duties.
2. [15:20]
Sitting down in a cushioned chair, watching all of this, is a young man with bright red hair and sharp green eyes. His face is pale and soft, almost feminine. The clothes he wears are more… light, consisting of an open dark jacket over a white shirt. He seems more civilian than anything. Talking to him is a dark-skinned woman with grey eyes. She wears a suit and ties with a deep coloured pencil skirt. A large hat rests on her head. As she speaks, she taps away at a holopad, frowning. “Fabian,” the woman says addressing the man, “I hope you are aware of your duties,” her tone is casual, yet he knows very well of the hidden meanings in her words. “I’m well aware MIss Fiona,” he replies saying her name, “I’m just… not very comfortable with this,” indeed, this is technically one of the first missions of this type he has ever been given. “You should get used to this,” she replies in turn, “this will be one of the first of many. Consider this as both a training exercise and a trial by fire.” For a moment, Fabian is silent. Then, he nods, “I see.” As of now, they and everyone else await the Imaginarium delegation to arrive. When they come, they will be greeted by many people- among them, tourist guides and culture experts. Fabian is to pose as one of them. This is his first-ever assignment as one. Who knew being a spy would be so tough?

Meridian System, Ancerious Galaxy Port Three, Serica Station Gavriil Novikov leaned back in the uncomfortable flight seat that had been his for the last several hours. The journey aboard the functional freighter that the authorities had rendered for his service had been a slow and dull one, taking him and his compatriots from Imaginese Space to here, the Meridian System, but it had afforded him one thing. In-between the uncomfortable bunks, the blank food, and the company of his assistant (the young man called Rurik Zaytsev, who Gavriil found to be “not too annoying”), the long journey afforded him time and quiet contemplation, something which Gavriil felt blessed to receive. At a steady age of 56, Gavriil had, in his opinion, experienced his fair share of fast paced life that younger years bring. He had worked in several fields, beginning his working life as a hand upon the refineries in his native “Kostromos Socialist Republic” (one of the 22 states that made up the collection ‘Socialist Republics of Imaginarium’). His career in engineering was short lived, as the Barlat War called him to arms, a call that Gavriil had felt compelled to answer, and a call that left him with the large scar that ran down his left arm. A scar that was covered now by his usual green camouflage coat that he wrapped himself in.
4. [17:58]
. Post war was where he had really found his calling, as he enrolled in higher learning, and began his career as an architect and planner, a job which had earned him a decent reputation amongst the cultural centre of party-political life. He enjoyed the work and having been given plenty of time whilst on his journey, read up on his destination, the Unified Democratic Systems, and the potential cultural sights they could see. The information was limited, which Gavriil knew meant that his reported findings here would be some of the first that Imaginese officials would pour over as they considered their future cultural ties with the UDS. “Would you like anything from the kitchen, Comrade Novikov?” came an earnest question. It was the young man, Rurik. He was the utter counter point to Gavriil in every aesthetic way. Where Rurik was young in the face, Gavriil showed signs of age. Where Rurik was light, blonde and clean shaven, Gavriil was dark, and with a weeks’ worth of stubble that made his usual walrus moustache transform into a beard, his hair atop his head slowly retreating into a balding spot.
5. [17:59]
. Gavriil put down his data pad, and looked towards the young man. “No, no thank you Rurik. And, again…please…call me Gavriil. Being so formal makes me feel…uncomfortable.” “Apologies…Gavriil…again. I know I said it before but having the opportunity to be your apprentice, and to assist you…it is an honour…your ideas on future city developments is one of my…” Gavriil cut the man off. “Yes Rurik…yes you have said, and I do appreciate it. Really…but, it is unnecessary to hold me in reverence. We will be shortly arriving at our destination, and from my experience these trips go much more smoothly if we drop all pretence of formalities. Less pomp, more ‘getting to know each other’. So, relax.” The young man nodded and beamed, before retreating to the kitchen. ‘He is young and has lived and seen so little’ Gavriil thought. Rurik was of a generation which had barely seen space beyond the confined of Laptev. But now the thaw in stagnation meant the young were off seeing the universe, an innocence which Gavriil wished he could regain. Rurik returned, steaming mug in hand. “I do have one question.” He paused, but as Gavriil filled the silence with nothing he continued. “I thought these exchanges would warrant something a little, classier. Ship wise I mean.” He eyed the surroundings of the freighter.
6. [17:59]
. “Ah, you want to know why they have given us this wonderful hulking transporter. Well, in truth Rurik, before any of the diplomatic shows of stature, before all those news stories you have seen where the premier arrives on glistening ships to crowds of foreigners waiting to catch a glimpse of our leaders, before all of that, it is usually men and women like you and me, arriving in unceremonious ways, gathering information. Plus, who can forget the cargo we carry, hey?” The young man nodded, and opened his mouth to reply, but was interrupted by another voice erupting from the ships speaker system. A female voice, that of YASHA, the ships computer, spoke: “We will shortly be arriving at Serica Station. Gentlemen, please prepare yourselves for disembarking.” “Well, here’s too it.” Gavriil said to Rurik.

Once the Imaginarium ship would be docked and have the passengers disembarked to step on the solid metal of Serica Station, they would have to bypass a series of security checks first. The standard stuff mainly- such as a brief scan for any potentially harmful pathogens that could have been carried, any weapons (though none were asked to be relinquished provided a reason was given if they were located), and for psionic mandalas (if any were spotted, then a brief overview of the dos and don’ts of psionics were given). Overall all, a standard affair. It is only when they reach the spaceport terminal that the Imaginese delegation would get a taste of UDS aesthetic and design. Stretching out as far as the eye can see is one massive room filled with rows upon rows of seats and tables. The walls and ceilings are all made of the same thing- dark metal with occasional white paint to give it a look, lit up by blue lights. Holograms and visual screens give a view of outer space though there are noticeably no windows. Commuters and workers would hurry along, hardly giving them all a glance and those that tried to are ushered along by security. There is a sense of order and business- like a well-oiled machine constantly maintained by a gaggle of engineers despite the fact that it already is working.
8. [12:34]
And now that they have a closer look at them, the differences between the two nations only seem to be more apparent. The first thing to note is the clothes- not just those of the delegation but also of everyone in the terminal; all of them wear dark and vaguely uniform-like clothing clearly meant more for practicality with visible pockets and bags. The second thing to note is far more uncanny- their physical age appearance. All of them, unless children or teens, look as if they are in their late twenties to late thirties. One would wonder if that really is the case, but to someone who has read the basic information on the UDS would be able to put together some theories. The UDS is known for their biological modifications and tech. Their entire race quite literally relies on cloning and information printing after all. And their lifespan is notedly longer than those of more natural humans. Could it be that the UDS citizens modify their bodies to maintain their youth and ability? That is most likely the truth. (edited)
9. [12:35]
As a closer look at the delegation is given, it becomes easy to separate them into four groups; reporters and journalists who stand furthest away from them and are recognised only by the fact that they are speaking directly into hovering drone cameras. Security officers are equipped with basic body plate armour and carry batons and plasma rifles. Plainclothes officers (agents maybe?) wearing more formal wear but are equipped with high tech headsets and gadgets. And finally, diplomats and civilian guides are those who wear similar uniforms but are more aesthetically pleasing, almost as if designed to mimic suits or dresses. One such individual approaches them; a fedora-wearing woman in a suit and skirt with small yellow markings. She smiles placidly at the group and inclines her head in respect, “Greetings, representatives of Socialist Republics of Imaginarium. I am Fiona. I represent a diplomatic branch of the Unified Democratic Systems. On behalf of my nations, I welcome you here and hope for only success for this meeting.” She gives no surname. It is natural. After all, in the UDS, there is no concept of family that entitle them to such a thing. Surnames are often purely aesthetic.

Security and scanning were both prompt enough for Gavriil and Rurik, the latter of which, having never experienced border point checks outside of the free flowing minimal checks on the borders between the Laptev Axis nations, felt a need to be overly descriptive, declaring everything he had in his possession. Rurik’s declarations aside, the UDS services were quick, and soon the pair found themselves ushered through to the terminal of Serica Station itself. A gigantic room awaited them, peppered with seating, tables, and a like. A sleek and modern decorative style could be seen throughout, the metallic, painted walls complimenting the views of space that although initially thought to be coming from windows, were in fact being beamed from screens, much to the delight of Rurik. Gavriil regarded the hurry of individuals moving to-and-fro. The clinical nature of the entire place, the variations on uniforms that the people were adorned with, and the orderly way the entire thing worked unnerved the man. Closer inspection revealed far more to Gavriil’s eyes, as the true repetitive nature of the station became apparent. Clones! He thought. He’d read of the UDS use of the technology, and the population’s entirely youthful look, untarnished and unblemished skin, certainly gave credence to the idea that its use was widely spread. He caught a glance at his own older, wrinkled skin, and thought of the scars that pottered his left arm, and the smaller ones dotted on his face; signs of a less than sanitised life, something he wondered could ever be experienced by a person from the UDS. . (edited)
11. [13:19]
He felt bad for being judgmental and cast aside his preconceived notions as a delegation approached. He spotted what could only be described as agents of the media, stood off to the side, security standing on ceremony, and an array of civilian like individuals who flanked what he identified as the diplomatic core of the group. Their attire was mirrored the uniforms he had already seen, with a more formal dressing. He looked down at his own, older, scraggy coat, and Rurik’s own jacket and felt suitably under dressed and under prepared. For the UDS, this seemed to be a newsworthy event, something which had not been considered by the Imaginese Authorities who had organised the trip, and something which now made the optics of the whole situation (from the Imaginese point of view) a real embarrassment. A figure, known as Fiona, introduced herself formally to the pair. Gavriil met her eyes, and gave a slightly embarrassed smile, whilst reaching out with his right hand. “Fiona, it is wonderful to meet you. I am Dr Gavriil Novikov, and this is my associate Mr Rurik Zaytsev. Thank you for such a…warm welcome.” He cast an eye across the entire delegation. “I must admit, we were not expecting such a turn out. Please, do not tell me this was all for little old us?” he said, with a chuckle

For all intents and purposes the Systems News Cable does an excellent job of delivering reliable news and information despite being more or less just another government agency. Using the media to control the populace, while an idea that has been considered many times, has never been fully implemented especially in a a galaxy where it’s becoming harder and harder to clamp down on the dissemination of information. Still, at least back home it is possible for them to do so. In Ancerious, where the Ancnet is simply too influential to ignore however? The UDS could kiss their dreams of fully state controlled media goodbye. So it is with much reluctance that the government cedes several liberties to the SNC purview of reporting in Ancerious. And brace for the wave of liberal ideas that will no doubt reach the Milky Way too. Still, at least it won’t be too bad as long as they report on what’s right. And this exchange of cultures and ideas will no doubt lessen the blow. Rose Teller of the Systems News Cable adjusts her suit more out of habit as she prepares to deliver her report to the camera drone behind her. The Imaginese delegation, from what she could see ahead of her, are now dealing with the remnants of security before they would finally meet with the UDS delegates. Clearing her throat, she speaks, “as we can now see, the Imagines delegation are now arriving at Port Three’s terminal over here at Serica Station.”
13. [20:31]
“For those who wish to know, their arrival heralds a recent deal made between our two governments about a cultural exchange in order for us to learn more about each other. What exactly the SNC are allowed to report on live remains to be seen, but regardless, this truly is a monumental day for not just our people, but the socialist ideology as a whole. Part of the reason for the warm reception on our side is the discovery of the presence of socialist ideals in other nations present here,” Rose finishes. The drone, which is basically a flying orb with a camera in its centre, records everything, reporting back to the main station located on the planet of Serica.

[+][+] Fiona takes note of everything her Imagines counterpart does. In her head, she calculates the reasons for his reactions, the possible cause of them, and what she could do about it. In the end however, she simply dimisses such thoughts. Despite them both appearing human, the fact that neither nation knows much about their cultures and tics makes it a foolish task to try to psychoanalyse every single movement of this ‘Gavriil Norikov’. Still, that doesn’t mean she can’t be polite about it. She offers the doctor a small but polite smile of her own and reaches out her hand to shake it in turn- two actions that would’ve been highly unusual within the UDS, but from what she understands, is a common form of polite interaction outside of it. “It’s truly good to make the acquaintance of you two,” she replies honestly, making eye contact with Rurik Zaytsev (hopefully to convey a sense of trust) before looking back at Gavriil. But the next words has her pause momentarily- did the Imaginese not take well to the presence of the media? But she soon smoothens her features before speaking, “yes, in fact. Those are reporters of the Systems News Cable, the mainstream news agency of our nation. They’re here to document this historic occasion. You need not worry about them being too prying- they’re only authorised to report at designated locations and only in some of the areas we’ll be visiting for our trip. Interviews aren’t even required. But if you wish, I can inform them that their presence is not necessary for the exchange.”

Fiona seemed nice enough, although Gavriil realised the first cultural mismatch as they clashed over clumsily through a handshake. There were smiles a plenty however, enough to feel welcome enough for the Imaginese pair. He side glanced at Rurik who was shuffling his feet and beaming awkwardly. ‘What is the lad doing?’ he thought. ‘In his defense, there are a lot of eyes upon us.’ He looked once more at the cameras. The ‘Systems News Cable’, Fiona had said. Certainly, a grand turn out, and certainly not what he had expected. His mind raced. ‘A historic occasion, oh bloody hell, this is going to go out like first contact, saved in the annals of history as the first meeting between our 2 cultures, and here I am in my old coat, with my 3 or 4 weeks of inconsistent sleep, and god knows what else…” His face registered a hint of discomfort, which he quickly hid behind a smile so fake that he realised the pair of them, Rurik dancing around awkwardly, and him with his fake toothy grin must look a real pair. “No no…it is fine. Truly, yes. I…we were not expecting such a greeting. We’ve been travelling a while, you have certainly not caught us looking our best.” He chuckled. ‘That’s right, give a small joke, break the awkward ice’ he thought. “Comrade Zaytsev and I are representatives of the Imaginese Cultural Studies program, although my own individual area of expertise comes in urban and cultural planning. To that end, I have something…” He reached into a small satchel, which clung to his side, removing an envelope, sealed with the stamp of the official national emblem of Imaginarium (a ring of rye, flanked by ribbon, with a central 5 pointed star). He presented the envelope to Fiona. “A letter from the Premier herself. Her gratitude to your people for receiving us, and an invitation to a return trip. I realise this has all been agreed…but something for the archives maybe?”

Fiona did her best to school her expression into one of polite neutrality. There were two aspects within her right now; the spy who was delighted at the prospect of maintaining the upper hand over her contemporaries and the diplomat who was worried about causing an incident. Still, she wasn’t psionic (yet) and so all she had to rely on as of now is her own instincts. And she couldn’t really figure out what exactly made the two Imaginese uncomfortable. Regardless, all that was left to do was to press on. “You need not have any worry,” she replies at last, despite not knowing what he was worried about, “I am sure that no judgement will befall you. While our nations may not be complete allies as of now, we are still comrades of a shared ideology,” there, hopefully, that would reassure him. And yes, it was entirely possible for her to have missed the joke. At the sight of the envelope, Fiona’s eyes light up. Finally, something she was good at. She takes it from his hands and holds it in front of her, “we are grateful for the message from the Premier. And yes, it is indeed something for the archives. Future generations will surely study this letter for centuries to come,” and she was not lying. The UDS always appreciated keeping things in order and the study of history was highly valued. Perhaps, in the far future, the names ‘Gavril Norikov’ and ‘Rurik Zaytsev’ will be among the most popular names chosen by future citizens. Fiona steps to the side and gestures forward, “perhaps we should begin with our travels to Serica. But before anything else, here is your ‘tour guide’ so to speak.”
17. [12:42]
At this moment, Fabian entered the conversation as he steps in. Unlike Fiona, his outfit was somewhat more casual, consisting of a white dress shirt and an unremarkable fibre jacket. He appeared young like everyone else. His bright red hair and emerald green eyes made him stand out from the crowd, a shock of vibrant colour amidst the gloom of the UDS. “Greetings,” he says. His tone of voice, while less formal, isn’t that cheerful. It is more along the lines of tired acceptance and indifference. He casts a glance at the two Imaginese and nodded his head in greeting, “I am Fabian. I will act as your guide and caretaker for the duration of your stay here.” His eyes glanced between the two faces before looking to the side as if he had accepted them, “our very first destination will be the Teleporter Hub. From there, you will be taken down to the Hub on Serica. There will be an allowance of time in which you are free to explore the terminal and then be directed towards your housing. Food and other refreshments will be provided to you there- if you wish, you may also attend the communal dinner.” Fabian turned around to guide them to their destination, but then, he stopped and pointed a finger at one of the massive display screens on the wall, “oh yes. Welcome to Serica, by the way.” And at that moment, the image on the screen changed to display the planet of Serica. It would have once been classified as a continental world- an orb dotted with blues and greens. It still retains half of that look. The rest have been consumed in black and white. Indeed, half of the planet is part ecumenopolis- a sprawling city of metal and lights that had consumed everything in its path.

Gavriil tried at a reassuring smile as Fiona explained his reasons not to worry. In truth, it didn’t matter a great deal, because what was done was now done, and he instead flooded his mind with the job that was now at hand for Rurik and himself. He nudged his companion as Fiona spoke of the precious space in which their letter would be stored, breaking Rurik’s own daunting grin. “Well, popular names for the future, how about that Rurik?” Gavriil said, in a manner of complete polite performance. “Ah..umm…yes…that would certainly be absolutely crazy to me.” Rurik said, not quite so confidently. Their eyes switched to the introduced Fabian, guide and carer for their trip. Again, the individual seemed pleasant enough, at least from the briefest of reads that you could attain from the shortest of introductions amongst a highly polite initial address, thought Gavriil. He listened, intently to Fabian’s words, bestowing upon the man a genuine smile, as he ran down their options within the tight schedule of their trip. He led forth again with an open hand. “It is a pleasure to meet you as well, Fabian. We are in your capable hands. I think I speak for both of us when I say that we have had a very long trip. It would be appreciated perhaps if we could maybe be taken to our accommodation, first, so that we may…spruce ourselves up, as it were. Of course, we would very much then love to explore all the avenues you have for us.”

Unlike Fiona, he was much quicker on the uptake and gave a firm shake of Gavril’s hand before letting go. He had far more experience dealing with foreigners after all. However, his expression of indifference did not change, though he did attempt to give a smile. Well, attempt being something more akin to a brief baring of his teeth. Fabian took moment to heed their words before he flicked his wrist to allow for a holographic screen to appear. He quickly typed away at it before he nodded, “that’s possible, Doctor Novikov. We’ll beam you down to the hub and have you taken straight to your accommodations by another. Should be a quick trip overall.” With a brief nod towards the Imaginese duo, he began to march towards their destination. However, it seemed that they would not be alone. Following them would be an entire congregation of intelligence agents and security officers, who all took up positions around them, practically surrounding them in a wall of bodies. It was rather comical truth be told. If it wasn’t probably such an inconvenience. The trip took around five minutes of walking in all before Fabian guided them to a hover platform that sped across the ground towards the hub. Much of the UDS architecture would be displayed; that being none at all. The grey metal walls would only be interrupted by screens either showing news or displaying travel information.
21. [13:46]
Finally, they would reach the main terminal hub. And it was quite a sight; a huge room the size of several football field with multiple floors. Built into the walls or standing up taking up much floorspace were large rectangular rooms and houses. The interior of them seemed to be designed like something made up of blue tinted glass that glowed slightly. Huge lines and crowds of people organised themselves neatly into queues that would enter these areas in groups. Once they were filled, the blue glow would suddenly turn green. And then, there was a bright flash of light and the group was gone- teleported to a planetside hub. “This a teleportation hub,” Fabian explained as they formed a group to line up to one of one's farthest back, “the beating heart of UDS transportation. These link to several other hubs and relays across the planet. Once there, you simply must take a smaller teleporter that will send you to the area it covers. Quite the invention. Every major planet that’s worth its salt would be developed to have these. Though newly made colonies naturally would not have them. We rely on more traditional automobile transport.” Once inside alongside their security detail and other commuters, the same process of the light change happened. Fiona took the chance to speak, “there are usually slight forms of disorientation for first-timers. But it’s nothing too big.” Naturally, that would be all the warning they would get before they would feel suddenly feel weightless… and then, being gently guided out of the teleporter bay and into the planetside hub- the only indication that this had actually happened were the presence of windows that allowed for moonlight to streak through the dreary rooms of the UDS. Fabian paused for a moment before he turned to face them, “I hope this journey wasn’t too disorienting. Because we have another one to go through.”
22. [13:46]
The group would quickly be hustled towards yet another bay before finally being teleported into a central plaza of some kind out in the open. And now that they all were finally out of room and station, the duo could most likely take the moment to breathe and look at UDS buildings. It was possible that this would be a familiar sight to them. Large buildings of dark metal would rise all around them, like a gloomy wall of nightstone. It was strangely quiet in the plaza with only small chatter and footsteps on grass being the sources of noise. Here, they were clearly able to see dozens of UDS commuters break off to enter the buildings or enter more the teleporter bays located here. The air felt different from those used to more natural environments. Not too surprising, considering it was most likely artificially produced. “We’re at one of the city blocks on the ecumenopolis side of the planet,” Fabian explained to them. He handed them a small device the size of a pen, “these are your keys. Head to Building 17 over there and slot it into the reception machine. It’ll give you a map to your room. I need to check on something real quick.”

Teleportation was a technology reserved rarely for the transportation of goods back in the Socialist Republic, and even then, was not trusted compared to the convoy of resources carried out by the worker and his tools. Whilst the party certainly made the argument that the technology would make their society “lazy”, there was plenty of evidence that Gavriil had seen to suggest that the real reason it was not widespread was that Imaginarium had simply not developed a technology “safe” enough, nor did it want to remove “jobs” from the workplace through too much automation. To that end, whilst Gavriil had “experienced” teleportation before, it was not something he partook in regularly, and it was something that he hated each time. Rurik to his credit, had held himself together through each relay, but as Gavriil turned to look at him, he could see the young comrade clutching at his stomach, the constant fight against nausea battling within. The repetition of metal-on-metal walls, the same repeating colour, combined with the constant dance from teleportation post to teleportation post also gave Gavriil a sickening feeling of déjà vu. He sympathised with Rurik, as they threw traversed the expanse. The best he could muster was an occasional agreeance with the UDS hosts as they spoke. . (edited)
24. [15:10]
Only when they finally reached the plaza, the home to their apparent base of operations, did they finally gain a sense of direction, with their stomachs finally returning to them. Fabian explained their location, directing them to their apparent accommodation for their visit. “Building 17”, whilst architecturally different, had some similarities to the Plattenbaus and Fjordskas of home, which Gavriil and Rurik noticed instantly. Gavriil reached out and took the keys from Fabian, thanking him in the process. It would be good to leave the entourage for a moment, so that the Imaginese could garner their thoughts. “Thank you, Mr Fabian. We will not be too long. A quick change out of these travelling…clothes is all we require…” He paused, noting Fabian’s need to “check” something. “Is everything Okay, Mr Fabian?” Rurik interrupted, seemingly also noting the gentlemen’s pause.

Fabian looked at Rurik and his expression was conflicted. He tapped the side of his head as he chose his words, “nothing serious. It’s just… our little party to carry out the cultural exchange event may receive some additions.” In the end, he shook his head, “well if it helps, I think it will be for the better. I suggest you all get some rest and change. I’ll go and meet up with the extra guides.” With his piece said, Fabian turned on his heels and marched out of the plaza into one of the teleporters. Fiona simply gave the Imaginese duo an apologetic smile, “sorry about that. We decided that Fabian might have been a bit too stiff to act as the guide alone for this, so we summoned some of his more sociable companions to join him for this. It will only take a moment for them to arrive so feel free to rest while you can.” And with that, they are guided into the building interior; surprisingly, it was a bit more pleasant, with the outer layer of the walls being made of a more appealing deep blue metal with silver accents. The process of reception was surprisingly quick, with the only thing being done was having the key scanned before they are allowed to access their rooms. Like everything else, the rooms are made from more pleasing colours than before, “we’re planning to implement holograms on a wide scale to make things look better,” Fiona admitted, “but we just haven’t found much of a practical use for it.”

She gestures around and guides them through the various amenities and services granted to them; there was a sonic shower and a more traditional water shower with a tub. Access to the wide digital library and various virtual entertainment services, including interactive live opera theatre. Containers that had various ready-made meals and even a way to access fresher food that can come prepared or not. And of course, two bedrooms that have lovely soft beds and a select few state uniforms. Could this be the UDS structure at hand? If the Imaginese research is correct, then the UDS does incorporate a form of meritocratic based credit system that allowed access to luxury ‘unnecessary’ goods and services such as some of these. Perhaps they were seen fit to have due their status as outworlder visitors on official business. “Well. I’ll leave you two alone for now,” Fiona said as she made her way out of the room, “if you need anything, just contact either the tour guides who will arrive shortly or the personnel at the next door room. Good day to you all.” And with that, she is gone.

Gavriil and Rurik nodded and smiled throughout their induction of their accommodation, though both minds raced towards a briefest of desires for a few moments to collect their thoughts away from their gracious hosts. They bid their farewells ((for now) to Fiona as she left their room, closing the door behind her. As the door clicked shut, they both gave a exhaled and slumped, neither realising just how tense and upright they had been throughout their introductions. Gavriil scratched his head and spoke in his native Imaginese. “Well, that greeting was…unexpected.” Rurik turned to him, slouching down against the wall as he spoke. “I thought this was to be a research-based operation, Gavriil. I thought this was…academic.” “Yes, well certainly that is how it was proposed to me by the bloody party. Ah I can hear the condescending tones of Tarasov now when he sees the footage of us arriving.” Gavriil gave a deep sigh, and joined Rurik on the floor. “Tarasov?” Rurik questioned. “Is he the Party official who arranged this?” -
28. [11:24]
“Yes, that’s the one. Or at least, he is the one who organised us. Hey, we best make the most of the situation now we are here. Try and enjoy ourselves, try and conduct our research. What do you make of it all so far, my young assistant?” Gavriil jibed, in a kind tone. Rurik gave smile, and relaxed as he fell into his more comfortable academic persona. “Well, technologically, everything seems on par with what we’ve been led to believe. Reliance on teleportation is quite interesting, but aside from that, I see many similarities between social structures. Allocation of goods, from my understanding is centralised, which means the luxuries placed in our room are, well…a treat for such important guests.” He stood up, and strode over prepared meals, and drooling over them. “Yes, I agree. It will be very interesting to see what they show us…hey, hey leave some of that for me, and let’s change into something more flattering. You can use the bathroom first, Rurik.” The time passed, as the pair routed through their luggage, changing from their travelling outfits into something more suitable for what was now an important occasion. Gavriil removed his camouflage coat, and changed into a simple black button-down jacket, with black trousers. He placed his Workers Party emblem upon his upper left chest and wiped down his dress shoes so that they now sparkled. Rurik for his part had changed into a white shirt with blue dress trousers, and brown shoes, whilst he threw over a simple thin brown jacket, and headed to the door to meet with their hosts.

Waiting out the door were a party of three. Fabian is recognisable as he leaned against the wall, having swapped to a more stylish coat than his previous one. But the other two are strangers though they wear the casual UDS civilian dress uniform. One is a tall and fair man with a combed yet bushy brown beard. He was currently in conversation with a shot olive skinned lady with dark hair. Could those two be the extra guides who would join them? But as soon as Fabian heard their footsteps, he pushes himself off the wall to face the Imaginese duo just as the other two stop their conversation. Unlike before, he seemed more at ease now. “Hey. Sorry for the wait but my comrades are here to join us for the duration of the exchange,” he said. He rubbed the back of his head, clearly feeling a bit awkward on having some of his friends here on this. But the tall bearded man simply stepped forward and offered his hands for the two of them to shake, “heh! Sorry if Fabian was a stiff. He gets like that when he’s all alone. Call me Ivan. It’s good to meet you two. It’s nice seeing friendly faces in this galaxy.” The woman is the next to approach them. She is far more shorter, yet her arms are folded and there is a rather pensive look on her face, “Sheila is the name I’ve chosen for myself,” she admitted as she too offered her hand to shake, “I have to say, it’s a bit of an honour being assigned to be your guides for this. I understand that you may be overwhelmed, but we’re just really happy about your presence here.” Fabian stepped up to them and waved, “well. If you’re done talking, then I have a list of places we can visit. I figured I’d let you both choose. So here they are.” He laid out the options to spend the first day of the trip.

Gavriil and Ruril emerged looking all the fresher than they had upon their disembarking of the ship, and more professional as a result. They both met Fabian and their new guides with a warm smile, and the offer of a handshake. “Wonderful to meet you both. I am Dr Gavriil Novikov of the Imaginese Cultural Planning Institute, and this is my associate Mr Rurik Zaytsev. Ivan and Sheila, it is a pleasure and an honour to be guided by you.” Gavriil turned to Fabian, and perused the potential itineraries in hand. “Well, this is quite the choice Mr Fabian. What do you think Comrade Rurik?” He gestured for Rurik to cast an eye on the list. “Oh…well…lots to do here. The museum maybe?” “Yes, museum, good choice. I think that would suit our academic backgrounds first and foremost. Would that be suitable?”

Ivan responded with a more hearty and enthusiastic handshake while Sheila’s was more polite and quick. With that over and done with, the party of three gave time for them to think. When the choice was made, Sheila seemed to preen with excitement. “The museum? That’s a good choice. I always was a fan of history myself, whether our history or those of someone else,” she admitted. On the other hand, her two friends had differing opinions, “I would’ve liked the opera more,” Ivan admitted, “I hear they were making a rendition of President Arthur and the Wardens of Avalon. Those are always fun to see.” Sheila scoffed, “you always enjoyed that, don’t you? Could try something more based in reality next time.” Fabian meekly offered his own piece, “I wouldn’t have minded a walk in the park. But the museum is as good as a bet as any to begin the exchange.” In general, the three of them seemed more lighthearted and warm than anything the Imaginese duo have seen of the UDS in general. They bickered and laughed and were open with their emotions. Something that set them apart from everyone else they had observed or met. “The museum isn’t too far from here,” Fabian mused aloud, “we can probably walk there if our guests are up to it. Would give us time to chat as well.” “Well, I’m all for a walk,” Sheila responded with a nod, “shall we?” And with that, the party made their way out of the residential plaza and into the streets of the District. Once again, the Imaginese would be reminded of UDS monotony. Tall black and grey buildings against a cloudy sky. Sparks and spots of blue lights on them to light up the streets that were hauntingly empty sans for a few commuters who have forgone the teleporter hub. And high above in the sky, hovercraft flew overhead, their engines humming as they passed by.
32. [20:03]
Due to the architecture of the UDS buildings, it was almost hard to tell if you were getting any further by walking. The streets themselves are narrow, invoking images of the streets of old Europe. In general, it was rather dull and maybe a bit intimidating to walk through them. Yet they were brightly lit and the company was fine. Ivan would be one of the first to try to break the ice, “so. Do you have any favourite operas of any sort? Or do you like plays or ballets more?” He asked as he walked side by side of them. Next would be Sheila, who would go next once Ivan’s questions were answered, “I heard that your nation had more experience in this galaxy. Any major events we should know about to study? Other than well… the obvious,” she was more or less referring to the current war.

The walk through the omnipresent, towering architecture was pleasant enough, though too crowded for Gavriil’s own tastes. He walked side by side his companions, listening to them talk as they led them winding through the streets. Rurik was by Ivan’s side and took the opportunity to answer the man’s question. “Oh, umm, I’ll be honest, Opera, theatre, its not really my “thing”. We have them, and it’s a relatively popular entertainment, but I’ve never really understood it myself. I guess plays are ok. We are consumed a lot with our work, so when we do get the chance, I prefer to just see friends…” he said in earnest. “Rurik is right. Plenty of our colleagues are involved in the institute’s operatic society, but like my friend here, it’s not my cup of tea, as it were.” Gavriil responded, preparing a question of his own when Sheila burst through. Gavriil turned to her in response. “Major events? Where would you even begin with that? Hmm….” He pondered momentarily. “It is difficult, everything is relatively subjective, and within the confines of the current conflict, I’d say that the biggest moments to consider are those leading to the war, which I am sure you are well versed in. To be honest, Imaginarium is new to the galaxy. It is only in the last year or so that we have emerged from our own self isolation. Our governments strategy of interjecting onto the universal stage has been…bold, but we are still newcomers.” He looked around at the architecture, before posing his own question. “I must ask…these buildings. What is the “ethos” behind them? I ask as one of our main areas of research is in city planning, and I would love to understand the make up of your communities?”

Throughout the conversation, the trio listened with intent, though Ivan seemed slightly disappointed. However near the end, when the good doctor began to speak of his nation’s involvement in Ancerious, Fabian chose to speak, “I see what you mean. On our end, it was more on bad timing; none of us was expecting to end up in this situation when we first began to expand here. And now we’re back at war. A large one as well,” he seemed bitter about that. Sheila followed after, “neither the public nor parliament were too pleased about this, but we needed to protect our colonies. Some say we should have just pulled out. Others say we should have waited longer or tried for peace. Regardless, we’re in this now.” A smirk came across Fabian’s face, “at least we’re not out there this time. I’ve seen enough war.” At the mention of architecture, all three faces turned sour, Fabian most especially. Ivan, being the msot neutral of the lot, spoke first, “well. You need to understand the underlying idea of the UDS first but-” “Equality and unity,” Fabian interrupted, looking downcast, “those are the two most important aspects of the nation. They shape not just our buildings, but our people, our schools, and our entire future too.” Sheila nodded her head, “the buildings all have one thing in common; they’re all the same make and meant to be able to fit in as many people at once as possible. The former is so that no one will ever be above or below their neighbour, the latter is so that they will all be united in their shared abode. Entire planets would just consist of these same districts and blocks of the same building design and make. An entire world of black metal and blue glass. Of course, there are differences, as we sill need to consider work places, entertainment areas, administrative zones, and industrial centres… but you get what I mean, right?”

Gavriil nodded as he listened, and cast an eye of Rurik, who he could see was also fully engaged in the tour guide’s description of their settlements. It made sense from an ideological point of view, and certainly the UDS shared a similar ethos to that of the Socialist Republics. The practicality of the situation made for different outcomes, one which Gavriil felt the Republics handled in a style more to his taste. He had been one of the lead designers on a “microdistrict” project template that was similarly replicated across the Republics, much like the UDS and its repeating buildings of black and blue, though he spotted differences that prickled at his curiosity. “I see, very interesting. What about natural spaces? Is there much room within the designs for green spaces? I notice we haven’t necessarily travelled through any as of yet?”

Ivan looked confused for a moment, “green spaces? We do have some buildings with green interior painting, yes, if that’s what you are meaning to say.” Sheila however, is quicker on the update and he gently nudged Ivan’s side, “no. ‘Green’ is slang used by foreigners to describe more natural landmarks. Forests and the like. You know, the stuff you find in biodomes.” He nodded in realisation and snapped his fingers in success, “ah yes! Well, yes, we do have designated areas for natural fauna and flora to thrive in. They’re quite large and take up a large space on some of our planets. Popular way to spend free time in. All though, Serica currently has none if I can recall. You’ll have to go outside the city to find anything ‘green’. “We follow this pattern more because it keeps tidy more than not,” Fabian entered the conversation. He kept his form relaxed as he walked, hands into his pockets, “easier to keep track of stuff. Easier to delegate people to.” There probably was a reason as to why the UDS did things the way they did. Perhaps a psychological effect they wanted to play on the populace. Or maybe Fabian’s words were true and that it was simly because they preferred things that way.
37. [16:15]
Up in the distance, the party would start to enter another district zone. One that had a larger plaza and more open space, Many ‘streets’ seemed to lead into it alongside dozens and dozens of teleporter bays. And sure enough at the centre of the plaza was a massive structure. A building of similar UDS aesthetic, though more larger than any of the residential housing. Decorating the walls of the building are various holograms and screens that slide into view, some reporting news, others reporting what were the daily attractions… ”Today, the Museum of Nation History is hosting several new holo-recreations dedicated to the subjects; the Founding of the Unified Democratic Systems, the Treaty of Richterdris, the Systems Charter…” a mechanised voice droned on from one of the many speakers slotted to the building’s side. Fabian raised a brow, “today might be our lucky day. You get a first row seat to our history’s display. We're having a Foundation week." (edited)

It was curious to Gavriil (and Rurik judging by the quizzical look on the mans face) the attitude of his guides towards that of nature. Perhaps it was just so jarring against his own philosophy, but he certainly felt, that his guides showed the quantitative nature of their society that was becoming ever present in his tour of the UDS, or so he seemed to assume. Their talk of the ease of delegating people felt almost too clean for his own tastes. He wasn’t convinced of its structure and felt guilty instantly for striking it against his guides who so far had been nothing by pleasant. Soon however, the large museum loomed over them, casting long and large impressions within the minds of the Imaginese. It was undoubtedly impressive, the digital displays that adorned its exterior advertising the treasures that could be found within in. The museum was the right choice, Gavriil thought, as he followed the party towards its entrance. “A Foundation Week? That sounds interesting. I have to admit I know very little about your founding…”

“We have certain exhibits in our museums that allow for the viewer to experience recorded events in history the best way possible,” Fabian explained as they all made their way towards the entrance of the museum. “Through usage of holograms and recordings of the actual events we can recreate the moment in time to a point via simulation. This allows for the learner to take in information in a way that is both interesting and amusing to the brain to prevent boredom,” he further elaborated as Ivan began to talk to the receptionist, “however, during certain weeks, we allow for what’s essentially an ‘open’ simulation of the event where learners can directly ‘play’ as the historical figure in question. This allows for them to be put into the minds of the people living during that time and allow for a better learning experience.” Eventually, they are all let into the museum. Due to the artificial environment of the outside world, there hardly is a difference in temperate or feeling. The inside of the museum feels more welcoming as well, with more decor and signs in holographic design. “So, do you feel like taking up the more hands on experience or would you like a more standard affair?” he asked.

“That is fascinating.” Gavriil admitted. “It uses virtual reality to recreate an interactive experience. Rurik, what do you think? Would you like a go?” he said with a cheeky jibe, turning to the young apprentice who was equally curious as to the layout of the museum. “Me? Oh, no no…I am happy to watch. Visual learner, rather than a kinesthetic learner comrade Doctor.” He said with a smile that softly repelled the jibe of his senior. “Ah ha. I am also happy to watch, Mr Fabian. Truth be told, I am interested in your understanding of the history, and what makes you…well…you?” He paused so he could turn to address the man fully. “This is all very fascinating, and an incredible way to learn, but what is the story of the UDS as you understand it? I sometimes believe that a lot can be gained by understanding the story, as presented by the person who lives the experience, rather than a presentation…as impressive as this is.”

Fabian paused for a moment at the words of Gavrill. His eyes darted around momentarily, as if taken aback by the question. Then, he chuckled lightly- the first time someone in the UDS delegation had ever shown something akin to laughter, “you want to know what I think of history? Well first you need to understand exactly what it took to create this nation.” He looked at the holographic screens that displayed the current events that would be shown in the museum, “Sadly this is something they won’t cover directly. Mainly because it still is a debated topic to this day,” he turned to address the Imaginese duo directly, “if you want, I can show you what I mean. We will have to attend a presentation for the Systems Charter for more explanation but I can provide a succinct show but I can give you a talk now.” His arms folded across his chest as he spoke, “the UDS is a great nation. Perhaps the greatest humanity has ever seen. But its foundation and creation is mired in the blood of billions. You need to understand- we are currently a fully equalised and unified species. But back then, all those years ago before we even left our homeworld, we were much more divided. We had dozens of cultures and religions, all of which can be broken down to dozens of subcultures and divergences in faith. We had families, mothers and fathers and sons and daughters who all created more of their own. Even the most stalwart unification theorists at the time acknowledged the impossibility of finding a way to find a way to smoothly bring everyone together. Ethically and morally at least.” He smiled bitterly, “our founder, Reinol von Lorica, did not have such constraints. And look where we are today.”

Gavriil nodded, words springing to mind as Fabian spoke. “I am the fury and fire that burns the ground. Blessed be my children, for they will be the grasses that sprout from my ruin.” He said, a recital tone in his voice. He smiled at Fabian as he finished. “An old Imaginese proverb. It comes from a revolutionary era poem which speaks of the violence carried out in our early years, and the hope that it would bring about a new world. We’re not so different in that respect, Mr Fabian. How we wrestle with that history is…well as you say, a debated topic.” He paused, looking from Rurik, and back to Fabian, a gentle smile still on his face. “It is largely a question of philosophy, and why I am so interested in your views. It is so easy to read the state sanctioned texts, to know the official histories. The state will rarely say the ends did not justify the means, but we as peoples are full of sympathies and ideals of our own.” Rurik shot he a cautious glance, which Gavriil received, again with a smile. “My comrade here worries that I speak to much, Mr Fabian.” Placing a hand on Rurik’s shoulder. “Imaginese politics may have removed itself from the days of secret police stealing you away in the night, but discussions on whether our founding figures were ‘right’ in all their actions is taboo. Unpatriotic some say. I have always had a curious mind, and…well, it hasn’t gotten me struck off the boards of academia just yet.” He released his grip on Rurik, addressing Fabian still. “So, what of it? Do you reconcile its bloody history with the advanced society which we see around us? ”

Fabian listened to their words and though he made no outward sign of it, he appreciated this talk deeply. At the mention of Imaginese politics and how they affected them, he let out an amused huff, “and here’s another similarity between our nations. It’s like the stars were aligned,” he shook his head and adopted a more serious look once Gavrill finished speaking. “I was a soldier you know,” he spoke by means of starting the conversion. I served for several years as a combat engineer and fought on the forefront of the Dominion-Systems War. Back then, I was more… closeted, so to speak,” his face twitched, as if remembering an old memory, “I truly did believe in my nation. I thought everything we did was well worth the price. I ate up everything the ministry taught us… but then, as I went to the worlds of other nations and saw the ways and wakes of other people… I began to wonder.” He stared at his open palm now, clearly lost in memory and thought, “what would have it been like if I had a father? What would it have been like if I had a mother? A brother, a sister? What would it be like if we all had families of our own. What would it be like if I could sing and dance in the streets without a care in the world? What if I could find a wife or a husband to settle myself down with?” His closed his hand into a fist and dug it into his pocket, “maybe I’ll find out eventually. But I wonder if those who come after us ever will.” “So, do I think the loss of humanity’s identity- no, what made them human back then was worth all of this? No. But I accept for what it is… and I cannot deny that we would never have been as successful as we are today if it were not the the atrocities of yesteryears.”

“War does have a habit of making you question your own beliefs.” Gavriil nodded, stroking, the scratching his chin. “I too was a soldier…once, so I can sympathise with you. Young, full of vigour and strength. Not so different to my colleague Rurik here! Though thankfully, Rurik has not had that vigour conscripted into a war.” He spoke with a smile to Rurik, before returning his gaze to Fabian, and adopting a far more concerned and respectful demeanour.
“As for the rest, I cannot even imagine. Forgive my ignorance, and tell me where to stick it as it were if I am poking my head into things, you do not wish to speak on, but; Are you not allowed to find a “wife or husband” as you put it?

He too adopted a more thoughtful demeanour as he struggled to find the words, “well. It’s more like I don’t know what it would be like to settle down with a partner rather than me being unable to. It’s just you have to understand. We no longer have the capacity for romance or a drive for procreation as our ancestors did. But when I began to read the old history books and old tales of love… when I was sent to other planets and began to see all those aliens and cultures with their families and partners… I can’t help but be curious really. So I wondered what we had lost.” Fabian shrugs, now rather uncomfortable but still keeping a polite face for them, “well. I think we should probably head to the museum if you’d like. You have your jobs to do, no? And I’d hate to be the reason as to why you were unable to do it.”

Gavriil felt overcome with remorse. Fabian had quickly moved the topic of conversation on, and whilst there would be nothing Gavriil would have liked more than to discuss the topic further, he did worry he was doing more bad than good at that moment. “I am sorry, Mr Fabian. I didn’t mean to cause any upset. Yes, please let us continue.” He gave a smile to the man, before turning to Rurik. “Rurik, now whilst we are in this museum, I am particularly interested in discovering further about how the politics of the UDS effect its people culturally and societally. Anything along those lines, make note of it, please.” He would have to continue his line of enquiry with Fabian later, and in a more tactful way.

Fabian returned the smile, “hey. No worries,” he turned around where he rejoined Ivan and Sheila, both of him were looking at him in concern. After a brief reassurance, he gestured for the two Imaginese to follow him through the museum doors, “visits to the museum and access to its services are free. But the holo-recreations of events often are considered as a ‘luxury’ service. Luckily, we get a pass since we’re here on official business.” Inside it is more… homely or as close to homely as it gets. The normal UDS aesthetics remain clear to see, but it seemed almost diluted to give a more friendly appearance. Several portraits of events or figures, a few flora positioned here and there, and less intense lighting- that sort of stuff. Fabian approached a receptionist and traded a quick few words before he received several small devices reminiscent of cards. He walked over to the party and spoke, “we’re going to be viewing the a basic overview of the UDS Foundation in the holo-recreation centre. I’ll show you how it’s run, but you should be able to figure out how it works. Think of it like a theatre act of sorts- only that you are experiencing your own version events that you have shaped. That does that make sense?” He wondered.
48. [11:32]
Regardless of the answer, he led the party through the museum halls. They would pass by several exhibits on the way all of them secured in their own cloisters or plazas. A noticeable trend in the display was that near every exhibit mentioned the greater whole of the UDS. For example, a display of a warship commissioned on this planet mentioned where it fought and how it served the nation. The founders of the planet were portrayed less as founders and more like administrators opening up a new branch. And then there would be several exhibits that were from the greater whole of the nation, such as old models of laser rifles or the old suits of armour. There were generally very few to no displays that spoke of the planet’s own history or the people who made it. Instead, their contributions to the nation seem to be what solidified their names in history. Perhaps there was some overlap with the two, but it does make one wonder...

Gavriil and Rurik both surveyed the museum with studiousness. A data pad in hand, Rurik moved from display to display, taking notes, and discussing with Gavriil over some minor point that he found of interest; and it was very much of interest to the pair. “I find it interesting,” Rurik began quietly “everything here covers their foundation, but it seems so…impersonal in a respect.” “Fascinating isn’t it. This is communal society to the nth degree. Combine this with what Mr Fabian said; how the UDS doesn’t have typical family bonds. How those unique cultural identifiers of multi-culture have been removed…it makes for an almost indistinguishable societal grouping. I wonder how far down it goes. Obviously, our guides have shown different personalities.” Gavriil spoke quickly, he felt the adrenaline rush of being on the front of some new discovery. “Yes. Yes! I was thinking similarly. Even here look…the founders are spoken of in almost statistical tones. No personal stories of the people. Everything portrays the singular one of the nation. Do you have an issue if I ask our guides a question?” “By all means, ask away.” Confirmed Gavriil. Rurik turned with a beam, approaching their UDS guides with eagerness. “This is all so fascinating. Thank you so much for bringing us here. I must ask; I am learning so much about your foundation, but do you, as a society, study the people…the individuals who helped such a rise? I cannot see any names here, and I find it fascinating because…well…in Imaginarium we revere our founding figures to the point of mythology.” He said with a jovial, joking and less serious tone to his voice.

Fabian was just about wrapping up the details for the trip when Rurik came to ask his question. He turned to face him and raised a brow in amusement, a smile tingling at his lips. Perhaps Rurik’s attitude cheered him up despite the severity of the answer he was about to give, “well,” he admitted, “it mostly has to do with the founders themselves actually- or perhaps, founder.” He hummed thoughtfully, “the main founder of the UDS, the revolutionary leader and first chancellor Reinol von Lorica, was the one who spearheaded this system the most. The dream he had called for the complete union of humanity in an egalitarian and equal manner. A single figure to idolise could have helped but it went against his dream. So when he set up his academies for the future of the people, he made sure that he nor the rest of the revolutionaries were not treated like a gods amongst men. Instead, they were looked at the same way one would analyse a figure of history- with as much scrutiny as adoration.” Fabian shifted his frown falling as he began to recall the details, “of course, this actually helped with people not seeing him or the rest of the founders as gods. You see, you must understand… to unite humanity, Reinol called for the most horrific of things. A kinetic bombardment of our homeworld, the subjugation campaigns against dissendents, the extermination of culture and religion… when all of this gets analysed from a purely logical point of view, it made it hard for us to actually idolise him… though it came at a price of course.” He winced slightly but did not elaborate further.

Rurik did indeed find Fabian’s answers fascinating. The people of the UDS (Fabian at least) seemed with the utmost conviction to believe that the ends justified the means, and yet also did not revere the individuals responsible, recognising their actions as ‘cruel, not placing them on a pedestal of making the hardest choice for the best outcome. At least, that was Rurik’s understanding of the situation. He nodded, showing his understanding to Fabian. He respected the almost purely logical approach to the foundation of the state that Fabian and his colleagues had. He felt there was more probing he could do. His insight rang with more questions, but he could see that the line of intrigued was causing Fabian anguish, so withdrew. “That makes perfect sense, thank you, Mr Fabian. Are we all ready to proceed further?”

Fabian seemed grateful at the change of topic and nodded grateful. He gestured for his comrades to follow as he turned on his heel, “well. Let’s begin our lesson then. I think my explanation won’t be as succinct as to what you all are about to experience in a moment.” He proceeded to lead them through a section of the museum labelled ‘Interactive History’. Here, museum staff wandered about alongside guests as they were all guided into separate rooms. The Imaginese would be able to note how before each person entered a room, they were given a headset of sorts to wear by the staff. “Well we’ll be splitting for a bit,” Fabian commented, “I suppose I should explain what exactly this is. Or maybe Ivan should, considering he loves these,” he gestured to him. The large man smirked before he puffed out his chest to explain, “aye. You will be taking into a holo chamber. From there, recorded events in history will be played out as if you were there yourself. And you will be- in a fashion. You see, due to the advancements in tech at the time, we are able to replicate a facsimile of the people who lived and breathed at the time using advanced computers. You will be able to interact and talk to them as if you are meeting them yourself. And that is the point of this exhibit- to get into the minds of the people of the past and experience the history first hand.” Sheila smirked, “think of it like… what’s it called? Live action roleplaying? Yes, that, but instead of people, it’s a simulation.” Ivan nodded his head, “aye. In this case, you will be attending the Treaty of Richterdris- where history was made and the terms of the revolutionaries were dictated to the defeated powers of Earth- our homeworld. For this simulation, you can take the role of either an outside observer or a member of either parties. Regardless, you will get to meet the Founder himself- or at least, the closest you can ever meet him.”

“Sounds intriguing.” Gavriil said, curiously. “We’ve similar technology back home. It has grown quite popular amongst our younger citizens, isn’t that right Rurik? You have a little, what is it called…adventure group, that does these holo rooms?” Rurik looked embarrassed, as if Gavriil had unearthed a secret in front of the whole gathering. “It is a cooperative storytelling group played through live action roleplaying set in a digitised world. We are even recognised by the Cultural Development Hub as being a strong advocate of team building and solidarity, as well as creative thinking.” He scorned. “Yes, yes, bunch of nerds playing with swords and stuff, I know.” Gavriil replied, again with a sly smile, showing he was once again in jest. “Either way, you go first on this one my friend, I dare say you will enjoy it more than I…I’ve yet to really acclimatise to these holo-suites.”

“Oh? So you do that as well?” Fabian observed after they wrapped up their conversation, “perhaps our culture is more alike than we imagined! Very well, Mister Zaytsev, step right up and grab the gear they give you. It’ll be vital in allowing you to interact with the world around you. I hope this proves to be an educational experience.” Ivan turned to look at them now, “in the meantime, we can enter the holoroom as well to see exactly what he will see, all though we will not be able to interact with them as he can do.” And with that, it was finally on. Rurik would be given a set of gloves to wear that would supposedly allow him to interact with the holograms more. And then, with that done, he was given the green light to enter the holoroom. [=][=] Step into the room. At first, it is a large place with many white metal tiles. For a moment, nothing happened. And then, everything would change. The tiles began to glow. The room flickered. And then, Rurik would be (metaphorical) transported to a time long long ago to a space station in the orbit of a planet in a far distant universe. The first to note would be the location- they were in some sort of observation deck with wide windows that allowed for one to view the stars that glittered and the white and blue planet that the station orbited. The next thing to note was the sheer amount of people there.
55. [12:12]
The room was practically filled to the brim with representatives, witnesses, and reporters from every race and colour under every flag and banner. All of them were in loud chatter and wildly debated with each other filling the room with a cacophony of harried voices. Rurik would have enough time to scan the masses, allowing for a pop-up display to appear with the relevant information he needed to know about them. A group of people wearing scarves around their heads cloistered close together, whispering in a strange tilting accent. Free Arabian Republic, Colony World of New Medina. The people of New Medina were previously under the direct control of the Middle Eastern Alliance on Earth, where they were ruled and influenced heavily by religious dogma. They fought for freedom under the banner of their republic and joined the Unified Systems Front in the alliance. Currently led by Salman Al-Khalifa. Another group consisted of stern figures wearing military uniforms of deep green. They eyed their neighbours wearily. Pan-Asiatic Coordinate, Colony World of Okeanos. A military junta that traces their origins to their planet’s militia who were abused by corporate overlords. Rose up and brutally subjugated their neighbouts before joining the Unified Systems Front out of convenience. Then were was a man who stood alone and defeated, his eyes bloodshot from the lack of sleep and shoulders heavy with exhaustion. United Nations of Earth. Homeworld of Earth. The federation that once acted as the representative body of humanity. Defeated by the alliance of revolutionary planets after decades of tyranny. This man is President Richard Tragan. More and more groups and individuals’ identifications kept on appearing for him to see. However, there was a little hologram that had the words ‘Next’ written on it. It was clear that Rurik was being given all the time to absorb the information before he needed to move on.

The technology different slightly from what he was used to, but the feeling, the atmosphere, all reminded Rurik of all his virtual reality experiences. Everything felt real, the brain tricked into absorbing the sights, sounds and smells, but something in the back of his mind felt ‘off’, keeping him aware of the artificial nature of the holoroom. He stood, momentarily, taking in the surroundings of the bustling venue. It felt very much like every union or party convention he had ever attended. An array of differing parties, all schmoozing and mixing, the noise of chatter breaching his ears in an idle fashion. He noted how different the groups all appeared from each other, the lonely man sat, broken in appearance, and the rest. He spoke, into the ether in the hope of speaking to his colleagues back in reality. “This is, something…truly. I know I am just an audience here but, is there capacity to interact?”

“That’s the entire point of this,” Fabian called out, though he would only be able to hear his voice, “you interact with historical figures of the past, their personalities replicated as close as we can,” he faltered for a moment. Was he hiding something? But he spoke on, “take the time to know the people here. Their motives, their pasts, their history. Once done, you can move onto the next ‘scene’ and allow for other figures to enter and let history play out. Naturally, you'll be given the option to talk to them too."

“Oh, very nice. I’ll uh…I’ll dive right in.” said Rurik, a real sense of urgency and excitement seemingly taking over his demeanour. Gavriil laughed, turning to his hosts. “See, the man LOVES this type of stuff!” Rurik took another look at the room, taking in each group, their body language, their tone. ‘Where to go first?’ he thought to himself, looking for an opening. The most obvious appeared to be the lonely, weary man from the United Nations of Earth, who was engaged in no conversations. He approached, bobbing with caution, unsure how the conversation would begin, or what to expect from the gentleman. “Hello? Sir, sorry to interrupt your thoughts, but could I trouble you for a moment of your time?”

Richard Tygan reacted surprisingly realistically to his words. The ousted president would look up at him through bloodshot eyes and speak, “trouble me? I don’t think you can cause me any more trouble than what has been done,” he continued to look down at the ground, “but go on. I don’t mind the company.” In the sidelines, Fabian watched the event with a tempered patience. There was one thing he did not tell Rurik. And that was that these simulations were often edited from real history to portray the UDS in a more better light and the powers of old Earth in a negative one. This was something he had only found out years after he had been led to believe this lie, and he knew very well that over ninety percent of the nation still believed in it.

The man looked even more tired and weary the closer Rurik got. There was a sad loneliness to his person, something Rurik pondered on, wondering whether the real-life Richard Tygan had been this broken a man, or whether historic fictions and anecdotes played a part in his holographic representation. Rurik brokered a sympathetic smile to the man. “You’re President Tygan, are you not? Of the United Nations of Earth? Why are you on your own?”

"That I am," Tygan replied. He returned the smile to Rurik and in that moment, he would be able to understand how he had gotten into position. Tygan possessed a ghost of a devil may care attitude in that smile more befitting that of a rogue than a politician. Perhaps that was what won him the masses. But it faded as soon as it appeared and the man shrugged before he squatted on the floor, seemingly ignoring the impropriety of the action. "Well the answer is quite simple. I'm essentially the face of the Earth now, aren't I?" He spoke, "this treaty is a sham. They can easily get what they want from us. But they've chosen to humiliate Earth and myself one last time by forcing the leader of the old government to sign a treaty on their terms..." He was being oddly loose with this information. Almost as if on queue, a small hologram appeared next to his face. It read: "In the remaining hours leading up to the Treaty, President Tygan was reportedly incredibly defiant and open about his position and his own opinions in regards to the situation. Experts say it was due to a declining mental and emotional mindset."

“Hmm, interesting…” Rurik pondered, reading the holographic text. “I wonder how deep that goes?” He addressed Tygan with sympathetic eyes, and open body that suggested that he was here to listen. “What a difficult position to be brought in. This certainly is to be a momentous occasion, for them at least. You’ll play a part in some history, unfortunately not one that you get to dictate. What of these…peoples?” He motioned with his arm to the collection of parties around the room, generally sweeping. “These are the glorious victors? Tell me of your side of the conflict…”

Tygan scowled, “they’re nothing more than disorganised polities of varying ideologies that only united because of that man and the military power behind his back. And it just so happens that he’s quite the madman- mark my words, this Reinol will become a tyrant the likes of which humanity as a whole will never have seen before in its entire history. I bet my life once he finds a way to come into power, half the people in this room will be dead or forced to comply to his demands- and the factions they serve disbanded and absorbed into his own.” He sighed and the stress lines on his face slowly relaxed, “damn colonists… I tried to do what I could to help them but they couldn’t wait any longer! They took up arms against the UNE and plunged our nation into chaos… millions, no, billions are dead because of this damn war and now we’re practically walking blindly towards the future…”

Rurik sympathised with the Hologram for a moment, albeit slightly. Tygan presented as angry, disappointed, but Rurik believed all beaten leaders believed they were simply a hand’s grasp away from victory. If only their subjects hadn’t ruined it for them. He turned to look over at the group Tygan scorned as a madmen, though Reinol did not appear to be amongst them. No doubt another interesting figure, someone worth talking to in this set up. He thanks Tygan, wishing him luck in the future to come, before heading over to the larger military party. He moved closely on the outskirts of the gathering, not wishing to budge his way in until an opening was found. He listened, attempting to garner the content of their conversation. (edited)

The military party were deep in discussion. But Rurik was able to hear them all out most likely because of the system’s design. The leader of the party, a man with a striking moustache, spoke in harsh tones, “I don’t see why those damn commies get to lead. If it wasn’t for us, they’d still be stuck in the meat grinders of Alpha Centauri!” He slammed his fists together and cursed in what the system identified as Japanese. His companions nodded in agreement while a stout man spoke fervently, “by the grace of god we’ll get our due. This meeting is our chance to get a say in matters before it’s too late!” There was more chatter and similar heated exchanges. From what Rurik would be able to learn from both the conversation and the infographic holograms that appeared it would be that this group were originally major critics of the early socialist government though they most notably abided by the many changes brought to human society and even helped enforced them. It was only when the UDS’ intentions of remaining democratic became clear that they rebelled, though they were far too late and were dismantled. Eventually however, an announcement would reach Rurik’s ears- Reinol von Lorica and the Unified Systems representatives were finally arriving. The doors to the space station opened. A group of men and women in sombre black and blue attire walked into the room, their clothes seemingly appearing to be a mix between a suit and robes. At the head of the party was a white haired man. A hologram appeared next to his head that introduced him and his party.

Unified Systems Front. Colony World of Richterdris. Though they began as yet another faction warring for supremacy during the chaos of the Worlds’ War, the USF soon became the dominant faction during the war thanks to excellent leadership and common goals shared throughout the colonists. They eventually laid down the foundations for the modern Unified Democratic Systems. Led by the Presiding Speaker, Reinol von Lorica who soon became the first chancellor and founder of the UDS. The group soon disappeared and made their way into the crowd where they began to interact with their fellows. Now that Rurik could observe them he would be able to note one thing- the humans at this time… were far more sociable and amiable than the modern UDS citizens. Indeed, they seemed so full of life and vibrancy compared to the people he had met not too long ago. Did the UDS’ policies truly change this version of humanity so much?

The set up was completely enthralling, and Rurik found himself lost in the roleplay, enjoying every second of it. He wanted to dig deeper, to ask about the backgrounds of the individuals on display more, to find out every bit of information he could from the room, but events moved as they had done years prior (or at least, a version of those events). He found himself captivated by the presence of Lorica, who demanded the attention of everyone in the room. Perhaps it was the notable charisma that Rurik found lacking in the UDS counter parts; a vibrancy that gave echoes of a life lived on the edge, as was to be expected by a grouping of individuals who had gone through traumatic events, and now were coming to the completion of their goals. He spoke quietly, hoping those watching the room from the outside could heard him. “Lorica. What was his background? I heard the military people mention that the communists were leading the way. Is Lorica part of them?” He wanted to listen in intently, and suck up all content available, but so many questions rushed his mind.

Ivan’s voice could be heard throughout the group and himself, “Founder Lorica isn’t just a part of the socialist faction. He is the socialist faction,” for a moment there is silence before Fabian continued. “Much of his background is unknown- it’s believed he purposely censored all information about his past during the chaos of the Unification- either that or it got lost due to bureaucracy at the time. But what we do know was that Lorica was born on Richterdris and founded a socialist political group there. When the Worlds’ War broke out, they became a militant group and folded in the local milita and garrison stationed there. Using extremist rhetoric and words, Lorcia singlehandedly sheparded millions under the banner of his Unified Systems Front all over human space. Then, they started to actively fight in the war… and here we are now.” Sheila then spoke, “many people saw him as a leader and as a shepard. They thought he would bring humanity out of the shadow of corruption and tyranny. People began to lose faith in him when he ordered the orbital bombardment of Earth and when he dictated the Treaty of Richterdris to all parties involved. By the time people realised he was not the messiah they wanted, it was far too late.” Back in the meeting hall, the USF group began to approach Rurik’s position. If he wanted to ask questions to them now, it was the time.

‘Too late…’ Rurik repeated the words in his head. “Interesting, thank you Ivan.” He spoke aloud to the gathered crowd, presumably watching from behind a scene. He returned his attention to summit taking place around him and focused in on the crowd that was now waiting in anticipation to speak with Lorica, who was moving around the room with a domineering elegance. He felt a swell of excitement and nervous energy. This hologram was certainly very realistic, but he reminded himself of its fictious nature. He would only get this opportunity, he thought, so why not go the whole hog. He nodded to himself, and moved quickly to the side of Lorica and the rest, attempting once more to listen in to the conversations now taking place in the room.

People parted before the USF group as if they were Moses. There were whispers and loud chatter all around them. Yet, the black-clad party remained silent as they approached their target; Richard Tygan, who openly glared at Reinol as he stopped before him, “here to rub in your victory, Mister Lorica? Here to tell me how it was all worth it? Here to justify your extremism?” Reinol von Lorica, the future leader and founder of the UDS did not reply. Instead, he gave Tygan a glare of his own, one that the president of Earth found himself flinching from. And with that, their interaction was over. Reinol turned to face the rest of the people in the hall and spoke. “We will now begin with the proceedings. The Treaty will be presented and the terms clarified. We will discuss what we expect and what shall we do. We must figure out how humanity will move forward to the future,” Reinol’s tone was cold and harsh. In fact, he was almost damn near spiteful towards everyone else in the room, “we will stay here as long as we need to. We will lay down the foundations for the government that will follow the disbandment of the United Nations of Earth.” Naturally, the words elicited many angry and harsh reactions from everyone else. A pop-up appeared that only Rurik could see, **Reinol von Lorica was a skilled orator, a brilliant commander, and an outstanding leader. Yet, he was an incredibly poor speaker and lacked social grace. He was described as cold and distant at best, and angry and bitter at worst. Some theorise that his poor social skills is what caused many of his fellow colonial allies to depart him. However, his brutal honesty and straightforwardness won him many followers and only strengthened the USF’s bonds with those who could understand him and were already keen on allying with him

The atmosphere had changed with the tension, and Rurik was revelling in it. He watched, intently, at Lorica, but also the crowd, all a mixture of emotions. It was a wonder that anything got signed at all, that any treaty was able to be met when it was clear that the various parties were at such odds with one another. The strongman had long been found to be a popular figure across many cultures, this Rurik knew. They certainly had experience of that within Imaginarium, a society founded on the ideas of a man who was almost deified in some quarters, but to see the very history take place before his eyes, he felt a strange sense of awe, but also a dampening of expectations. The strong man was just a man. Nothing more. He leaned in further to the crowd, attempting to hear more of their rumbles of dissatisfaction, as well as the words of Lorica as they continued to pour out.

Reinol waved a dismissive hand at the reactions of the people. He was utterly unfettered by the rage directed towards him and his group, “regardless, everyone moves to the auditorium in thirty minutes. The Treaty will be presented then. In the meantime… feel free to entertain the questions of our journalists and reporters or enjoy the refreshments served. If anyone wants to talk to me, I’ll be here,” he grumbled before walking off to disappear from sight. Despite his blunt arrogance, it seemed he had a way with words. A sense of relative ease seemed to fill the room as the civilian reporters began to pick their interviews and reports. Somewhere along the line, a cart of snacks and drinks (non-alcoholic) was brought into the room. This place seemed more like a social party than a diplomatic meeting. But the constant gazes at a clock hung on the wall made it clear that everyone was still ready for the main event. Suddenly, Fabian’s voice echoed out, “now’s your chance to meet with Reinol- this is usually what gets people to come to this simulation. A chance to talk to their founder… somewhat.”

“Receiving you loud and clear.” Rurik said, with enthusiasm. This would be the most interesting part. How had the UDS programmed their founder? They seemed to allow a ‘warts and all’ approach so far to the program, albeit somewhat tempered. Could Rurik expect to find a man with his flaws on show? He moved closer taking in the full image of Reinol. How would he play it? He wondered. He was sure the hologram had been programmed so that the historic figure would answer all questions, and not have any of his own (namely, who was Rurik? Why was he here? Etc), but he couldn’t help but feel that he must play some part. Reinol had mentioned journalists, perhaps that was a route he could take. He stepped forward, with confidence. “Mr von Lorica, a moment of your time if I may. You sit upon the precipice of a monumental achievement. What is next for these people? What society is it you envision them creating?”

Reinol was clearly programmed in some form to be recognise journalists- or maybe the system was just programmed to recognise everyone as journalists. Regardless, he answer was quick and succinct, “under the tyranny of the United Nations of Earth, we colonials were treated as nothing more than numbers on a paper by heartless corporations and greedy capitalists. They saw our homes and lives as means to fill their own pockets and furnish their mansions. My people- no, humanity will no longer chafe under such chains.” His eyes narrowed. Each word was spoken with vitriol and spite, yet when he talked of humanity, his tone softened and a hint of pride entered, “we will live our lives in equality, peace, and unity. I envision a society where cooperation amongst comrades comes first before all. Where actions are dictated by reason and sense rather than centuries old dogmatic traditions based on superstition and fanaticism. From now own, human society shall move forward as one where we can progress as a people as a whole.”

The answers were textbook. Rurik could almost hear the same slogans repeated across his own home world, so identical were the promises Reinol uttered. Here sat a man on the precipice of his crowning achievements (albeit it digitally), and Rurik noted that whilst he recognised this was programmed to reflect the “official” view of history, he couldn’t help but believe that the real individual was as full of bravado and conviction as its holographic counterpart. He nodded as Reinol spoke, fully engaging in the role of “journalist”, as they did so. He wanted to test the parameters of the hologram. The UDS had shown itself very willing to logically view its own messy history, and to not idolise their founders. How would they frame this within the reinol hologram, he wondered. “…and what would you say to those defeated, here today? How do you plan on bringing all under your vision, after such violence?”

“To the defeated, I will say that their only option now is too cooperate with us,” Reinol replied, “and that goes the same to our victorious allies as well. We stand at the precipice of salvation. Humanity has finally received a chance to make things right. We must all be willing to the plunge into unknown waters if we ever wish to thrive. And our Parliament will be sure to steer the way.” Once again, holographic text boxes appeared in front of Rurik, “Despite having not yet been created, Reinol continuously would speak of a ‘Systems Parliament’ that would supposedly be the key to his vision of a united human government. During the drafting of the Charter, the concept of a unicameral legislative parliament that acted as the basis for a unitary republic was the one demand that Reinol could not be negotiated on. Eventually however, all of his demands would be met once he was elected as the first chancellor.” Fabian spoke as if to give context, “some say he was practically a dictator during the first years of the UDS.”

Rurik considered Fabians words. ‘The most direct route to change is often forced.’ He thought, revisiting a text book that he had studied once upon a time. The hologram had been fascinating. He knew he could stay in it all day, picking the brains of every character, though he realised that he would not perhaps get the philosophical discussion he desired, though the AI had shown itself to be resilient so far. “This has been fascinating. Soon the entire simulation faded away and left Rurik in the room- which he would now would be able to notice had a window to the side that showed the rest of the group. Ivan was the first to speak, “I think we should go for communal dinner. Lots of camaraderies there and I’m sure many would be happy to meet foreigners. If not, we can walk you back to your apartments where you can enjoy a meal and rest until tomorrow. I do not mind either.” The door opened and Sheila waved Rurik to join them, “to be quite honest we’re very excited now that we’ve finished the history lessons. This was the only thing that was considered ‘mandatory’ for us to show. But now that it’s out of the way, we’re pretty much free. There are a lot of things we can all do together. Soon, the looked turned to a silent “well, what shall we do now?” between the pair, and Gavriil took charge. “I think, if it pleases you comrades, that we would very much like to take you up on your offer of a communal dinner. You have all worked so very hard to make us feel welcomed today, and I feel it is about time you all had time to relax as well!” Rurik moved to stand beside Gavriil, and the two Imaginese looked over their UDS colleagues with purpose. Gavriil continued “We can discuss further our budding interests in our two societies.”

And that was that. The group of six departed from the museum and into the streets once more. The walk back to their apartments is brisk and quiet with the occasional chatter between the UDS people sparking up before a return to the silence. When the group finally entered the plaza it was to find that one of the buildings of the plaza had its door opened and was welcoming nearby citizens to enter. Closer inspection revealed the building to be labelled in a huge signpost, ‘Dining Hall’. “Usually every residential district and plaza comes with a dining hall,” Ivan explained, “it is where food is made and stored to be used by the populace. While it is not necessary to eat meals here, it is encouraged for citizens to dine here at least three times per week. Helps to foster camaraderie among the populace, no?” Even as he spoke, the group entered the hall. They would be greeted by a receptionist who quickly logged all members of the group into a computer before directing them into the proper dining hall. The simple way to describe the dining hall here was it followed the general theme of the architecture. Boring yet practical. Large circular tables were capable of seating fifteen people at once. Separate booths and stands distributed food to those passing by. Large screens across the wall displayed the news for the people to watch. Fabian spoke, “well I suppose I should inform you that as guests of our republic, you are all granted access to high levels of food. I believe we were last serving ostrich eggs and meat as part of that package though there was a recent windfall of seafood as well. I can go check and bring some over. You don’t have any allergies right?”

“Aha, not that I am aware of, what about your Rurik?” Gavriil gestured to the younger man, who shrugged with a smile, answering “No no, anything goes for me.” The canteen was functional, the general design of a communal space not too different from similar work dining spaces or restaurants back home, albeit with a little less flare, and a lot more function. In fact, Gavriil decided at that moment that that really was what made the difference between the two states. Where his homeland had developed tried to encroach the “beauty” of its ideals upon all spaces, the UDS was far more logical and functional. It was not through a lack of creativity, he concluded, the museum they had left behind clearly being the results of fantastic innovations. Simply put, this regime had not had to reinforce itself with its own brand, he surmised. He was hungry, and a good meal amongst the group was something he was very much looking forward to having. He looked to Fabian and Ivan, making light conversation, sparked by yet more curiosity. “You are encouraged to come down here at least three times a week you said? Where do you go the rest of the time?”

Chris (Imaginarium SR) — 25/04/2022 17:57

Para (Khanate | UDS) — 28/04/2022 12:34

Para (Khanate | UDS) — 07/05/2022 20:31
14. [20:31]

Para (Khanate | UDS) — 04/06/2022 13:45

The best he could muster was an occasional agreeance with the UDS hosts as they spoke. . (edited)

Truly has.” He said, speaking to the colleagues outside of the room. “I think I am finished however. I don’t want to take up too much valuable time with my own indulgences.”

“Sounds good to me,” Fabian said, “I’ll go and have this shut off. In the meantime, why don’t you all figure out the next step our your visit?” As he spoke, the simulation Rurik was in would suddenly still, the noises of the crowd dying down to be replaced by a stand in melody that was meant to fill in the silence. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your stay here,” she sounded a lot more relaxed and happy now. Perhaps she was simply glad to have had finished a major objective.”

Rurik nodded, and thanked Sheila. He could see her relax, and in that moment smiled and said “I am sure we will, thank you again. This has been fascinating.” He turned, and looked towards Gavriil, who was returning his smile, happy that his young colleague had enjoyed himself so much.
