Akuech, Svarthan Trust Capital
It was always odd and slightly unsettling to see the great cloud projected videos on the way down. Normally, the images projected onto the metal particulate and pollution filled skies of Akuech were a welcome reminder of the fruits of her labor, not to mention a nice way to be informed of not only new products but also news and other goings on in the Trust. But no matter how many times Aypolth Kadremass, one of the representatives of Shio Jhank Enterprises to the Trust as a whole, sees those mirrored, ghostly images, distorted by the very pollution and debris they are projected onto, she cannot stop feeling a sense of wrongness about them.
Of course, perhaps it may just be the strange nature of the meeting she was just called too that is putting her on edge. While it was not unusual for the major subsidiaries of the Trust to be called together for legislative purposes, it was odd for so many varied sectors to be united for something that was at least for now purely business related. Her mind wanders through numerous possibilities on why they could have been called here, trying to connect the dots as to why not only mining but also defense, construction, transportation, and industrial subsidiaries have been summoned. It must be something big that was the only thing she could be certain of, otherwise what possible explanation could there be.
As she ponders this, and gazes at the latest reports from her employers in order to be ready for her meeting, a blinking message alert appears in the corner of her vision, causing her to minimize the reports and look at the two other Svathan in the small ship with her. Each of them also works for the same company as representatives, and in fact one of them is even her mate.
“We are almost there my love. I can already see the Trust's headquarters up ahead, and our landing codes have been approved. We should be arriving shortly.”
“Thank you dear.” Aypolth replies to the Svarthan currently piloting the craft, Tiezu Trudremossk. Not only a pilot, he is also an excellent accountant and general mathematician. Meanwhile the third member of their group vents steam in what is a Svarthan equivalent of a laugh, as they likewise close their displays and focus on their soon to be landing.
“You two are just so cute together you know that right? Say, I forgot to ask, but how are your hatchlings coming along? Little Eordyss is almost ready for his Augmentation Day right?”
“Yes, he is so excited it is basically all he talks about. After this meeting I was planning on taking him to our local clinic and have all the measurements and tests done so we can prepare him for the event. He wants to be a superheavy hauler you know, so we plan on getting him some junior strength and carrying mods to help him grow used to their power.”
“Aww isn't that sweet of you. And convenient too I imagine as the Enterprises usually cover a good deal of the cost for augments, especially if they are related to mining.”
“Thanks for those kind words Xovran.” At that Xovran Kaphruvolt, a logistics specialist and long time family friend of the pair puffs steam sheepishly. As they prepare to reply, the ship finally reaches the hangar they were directed to, and docks next to similar craft, presumably for other representatives. With a lowering whine its engines spin down, and Tiezu turns one of their top mounted camera eye arrays to face them as the ramp at the back of the craft lowers.
“We can talk more on the way there you two. Common lets go so we are not late.”
“Yes, of course old friend. Care to lead the way Ayploth?”
“Certainly, just follow me. And by the way, just out of curiosity what do you both think this is all about?”
The trio disembark the ship, and begin heading towards the meeting room, still chatting with each other about the strange meeting and their families in basically equal amounts.
2 Hours Later, Trust HQ Meeting Room ZR 9732.
“You must be kidding, yes?” An astonished Xovran lets out a large puff of steam, filling the silence in the meeting room with their natural voice and language, along with adding yet more vapor to the already dense cloud caused by the expressions of incredulity from the other representatives present.
As extractors start to clear the steam from the chamber, Diorvud, who had just spent the last two hours explaining in greater depth the nature of ICEC, which was not news to those assembled as the creation of the economic block was announced basically as soon as he returned from Union space, but also talking about their ideas for a mega structure to establish them as a real force in the galaxy, an idea which was met by a mixture of concern due to its scale, but also approval for the huge amount of jobs and profits it would bring. He also talked about their part to play in its creation, which was to no one's surprise the collection of resources and their processing, along with logistical concerns.
However the last part of his discussion was the one that drew the most attention the most and he was now prepared to back it up. As he had explained to them, this project would require mining on a much larger scale than any they had ever seen before, and as such they would need a newer device to do so, one of essentially unrivaled power and efficiency. He dubbed this proposal the Guawyi Cha'sidic, or the “Claws of the Stars” a device which would utilize such immense magnetic power that it could tear the core of a planet out from orbit.
But before he can speak, Xovran continues on. “Such a project would require magnets more powerful than any that exist! Only magnetars have power even close to that in scale, and despite our extensive studies we cannot replicate that power.”
“Yes, those concerns are all valid. Along with those of cost mentioned by our representatives from the shipyards and foundries and those of it being perceived as a device of basically superweapon power, should we use it on any inhabited planets as was mentioned by our security expert. However, the technological hurdle is one we can certainly overcome, as I have already submitted a trade proposal with the Union of Worlds for some of their Monopoles, magnetic particles with only one pole, and as we have long suspected, the key to a revolution in our use of magnetic technology. With these, and the money that my proposed expansion into the galactic market may well bring in, this project is entirely feasible.”
There is silence in the room, as Tiezu and other mathematically and economically inclined Svarthan run numbers through their advanced computer add ons, while discussing other factors through linked comms. Finally at the end of the table, a representative from one of the largest R&D subsidiaries in the Trust looks up and nods.
“He is correct. The numbers indicate that with all the factors considered the only issues that we cannot account for accurately are the research that needs to go into the “monopole magneto-hydrodynamics” and the reaction from the galactic community at the deployment of such a device. However our scientific studies indicate its possibility more than they refute it, and the devices purpose being for mining rather than a weapon, combined with our fairly good standing and non-warlike reputation make it unlikely the galaxy at large will respond negatively to such a device, especially if we use it as we say and show as much.”
With a nod Diorvud once more addresses the room, pleased wisps of steam emerging from his shell, as he spots the subtle body language hints basically invisible to non Svarthan indicating approval for his idea slowly starting to take hold.
“Thank you for that. Now, let's hold a preliminary vote before we adjourn this meeting. All in favor of the projects I have proposed, please submit your votes now…”
3 Weeks Later, Raidhein City, Headquarters of Major Svarthan R&D Subsdiary Cethirth Solutions
“Say, did you hear we are supposed to be getting a special shipment today? Something REALLY big apparently.”
“Yeah, I heard the scientists blabbering on and on about it being of incredible importance and how it could represent the “largest breakthrough in magnetic technology of all time”. Whatever it is, I sure hope it lives up to the hype.”
The pair of security guards continue to chat, their conversation shifting away from the strange delivery and towards other matters such as the latest sports and their family lives.
Meanwhile, down on the loading dock, a crate is being hauled into the building, a crowd of Svarthan scientists babbling excitedly both vocally and through their magnetic communications as they anxiously follow the hauler crab carrying the large crate of entirely non magnetic canisters into the building. Already ideas for new experiments with these near mythical particles spring into their minds, their excitement barely contained as they wait the seeming eternity for the shipment to reach their labs so they can get to work.
One thing is for certain, the security guards' hopes will certainly come true. The monopoles will DEFINATELY live up to hype, and hopefully see use in the grandest Svarthan construction yet.
