Nagaetros examined his present surroundings, and pondered.
The distant rumble echoed like thunder, but He knew it was something more. Far off in the distance, he saw brief flashes of light, their radiance reflected by the snow that still blew around him in gusts and bursts. He reflected on this: despite the apparent chill, he felt no cold. He looked down to where his talon’d feet stood, buried up to their ankles in the frozen white powder. Not even a shiver. Interesting.
Though, it could have merely been that his present guardian simply did not want him to feel the cold.
What he felt, rather, was a sense of…foreboding, like things could explode at any moment. The omnipresent appearance of a distant artillery barrage aside, he felt tenseness about him, like standing in a minefield.
Of course, considering the nature of his host, for what he knew, that could be par for the course.
Nagaetros examined his present surroundings, and pondered-
-and smiled.
a voice called out amongst the snow, weak and young. A blue royal drakeling with red markings covering his body wandered through the great white plains, up to his waist in snow.
"H-Hello? is anyone there?! P-please! I’m scared!" the young drake cried with growls of helplessness and whimpers. "Someone! I just want to go home..."
the small ears picked up the cry, tugging at feelings that existed deep inside even her own heart, deeper than her lost memories, more primordial than even the commanding instincts drilled into her by....she could not recall.....
The young drake fell back into the snow with a cry when the frail-looking human girl suddenly appeared in from of him.
“w-who are you? Are you with that mean woman?" the drakeling whimpered from the snow, his arms over his head in a hopeless effort to protect himself, his tail wrapped around him defensively.
He looked at the girl, his fear slightly giving way as he looked at her: she was not as tall as the Woman, and had a full head of black hair that cascaded over her shoulders. She wore simple garments, a white turtleneck with a long red skirt and black stockings, but his attention was drawn to her face.
Unlike the woman, this girl emanated an air of concern, and compassion. Her eyes, sunken deep in an expression of exhaustion, seemed....warm.
"Do not fear"
He looked around in renewed terror, for the voice had come from all sides, and the girl's mouth had not moved.
He scooted back in the freezing snow as the girl knelt before him, seemingly ignoring the snow in her thin clothes.
"Please! i just want to go home! i miss my mom!" the drake cried, burying himself deeper into the snow.
The girl's face never lost the expression of concern: indeed, it seemed to deepen.
The distant rumble of the Artillery seemed to slacken, the driving snow seemed to falter, and the drake looked up in surprise as a blanket suddenly came down around his shoulders.
"Do not fear."
The drake whimpered but knelt into the comfort of the blanket.
"Where am i? w-who are you?"
The girl's face finally changed: a small, gentle smile crossed her lips.
"You are someplace safe." her voice was gentle, and now came from her mouth.
"As for who I am...well, to be honest, I don't know yet myself.".
A weak but trusting smile crossed the drake’s quivering lips.
“My name is leithanon....c-can you help me?"
The girl's smile did not waver, and she scooted closer, pulling the young drake into what seemed to him to be impossibly warm arms.
“Of course I will" she said "But for now...you should rest. I can see you have been through a lot."
"T-thank you. Thank you so much" the drake finally gave a full smile, his teeth white as the snow that surrounded him.
The girl, still smiling, slowly closed her eyes, pulling the blanketed drake closer. To the young drake's amazement, the snow slowly faded from sight, and the temperature rose. The distant booming faded out completely, and he watched as the snow-blasted wasteland was replaced with a soothing evening on a grassy hillside. Birds fluttered on the wind as the sun set in the distance.
"Another memory" he heard the girl mutter "but of what?"
Her eyes opened again, and met the young Drake's confused gaze. She smiled wider, to reassure him.
“we will be safe here" she said firmly "No one will harm you."
The drakeling leaned in and rested his head on her lap.
"Thank you" the drake said, closing his eyes to rest.
