Vaplana: Killian Verge
The Queen sat at her desk, stressed out of her mind. The invitation she was trying to draft simply meant everything, and getting it wrong could have disastrous consequences not just for Vaplana but for everyone. The galaxy was on a knife-edge, and Fidelia was determined to try and bring the two sides of the conflict back from the brink. Maybe meddling would only draw attention to Vaplana, which would not be welcome when the war fleets appeared on their doorstep, but maybe some intervention was all that was needed for the galaxy to see sense and stop the madness.
She had it all written up, but the nerves were getting to her. She had to send the same message to both Orillia and The Union at the same time as to not offend either side, and since Vaplana’s relationship with both sides was very different she had to try and balance her tone to fit all situations. Being too cold would make the Union think their alliance was ending, and being too friendly would make Orillia believe Vaplana would join their cause. Which was certainly not happening, Vaplana would remain neutral at all cost.
“Thalia, could you come look this over for me? It needs to be perfect…” The Queen summoned her secretary and trusted friend to ease her worries. Thalia was a master at interpreting tone and building networks, so having her around was a godsend.
“Looks fine, Your Majesty. Is it time to send it off?”
“Yes. Hopefully both sides respond well and will actually show up. How are the preparations going to receive any guests?”
“On schedule. General Brodin has organised sufficient cover for security, and the Palace staff are on standby to prepare rooms.”
“Wonderful. Let’s hope this isn’t a mistake.” Fidelia sighed and sent her invitation, hopefully representatives from Orillia and The Union of Worlds would meet here soon to talk out their differences. It was too late to go back now.

"An invitation to a diplomatic summit? Held in a Union vassal for all intents and purposes? Surely this is a jest"
"It is not Madam Yrillix I assure you, it comes through all the proper channels. They wish to discuss the possibility of peace and negotiation" The lighting within the room was dim, and Yrillix didn't even look up from her desk. Things were in motion, and she had little time these days. Assembling a fleet from the hundreds of nations who had joined CONA was a harsh task.
"Negotiation? And what? They expect us to hand over the galaxy?"
"We don't know the specifics, but the Queen of Vaplana has requested our presence" The aid was persistent and it made Yrillix stop her work and look up.
"A native wishing to avert war which must be pushed forward for their own benefit. I suppose this is the last time we may get the political higher ground now the CGSS is no longer an avenue for diplomacy. Fine, I will attend. Assemble an escort fleet, I do not wish to be assassinated by the Union on route."

"Negotiation? I have much respect for Queen Fidelia but is she mad?" Eiasten was quite in disbelief as he read the message.
"It seems so sir, they request your presence and hope it can end the coming war"
"There is no way to end it diplomatically, Aedleshaven has cut our fuel and Corona is going in to secure the Expanse soon to be taken over by CONA. War is inevitable, there is no backing down we analysed every outcome or attempt" Eiasten ran a hand through his hair.
"Indeed sir, but this could be a final opportunity for us to gain the moral high ground, if we make this a public event we can negotiate softly and put Orillia on the coals so to speak"
"Hmm. A very good point, send a message to the Queen that I will attend, lets just hope we can get something out of this. We have weeks until Corona hits the Corridor, maybe this could avert war between the blocks at the very least"
Vaplana: Killian Verge
Fidelia stood proudly atop the grand staircase leading up to her Palace wearing her finest, the afternoon sun glinting pleasantly off her jewels. The Union’s delegation was due to arrive any minute, and Orillia would not be too far behind them. There would be just enough time to settle her Union allies before welcoming the other side. It was a tight timetable, but her guests had insisted they could not spend more time than necessary with her. She was lucky anyone decided to show up at all, to be frank. She was determined to make the most of this opportunity.
The Union convoy finally pulled up outside the palace gates. Once they were let in Fidelia began descending the stairs to meet her guests. They met about halfway.
“Prime Minister Eiasten, thank you for making time for us in your busy schedule. I endeavour to make your time here pleasurable and fruitful.” The Queen curtsied respectfully and took his arm like an old friend, leading him back up the stairs into her home. “It is a pleasure to see you again, I hope these times are not too taxing for you. Our summit will begin tomorrow morning, so feel free to enjoy our hospitality in the meantime.”
Once Fidelia had ensured Eiasten’s party and their luggage had been seen to their quarters she rushed out to the steps again, she only had 30 minutes until the Orillian delegation were due to arrive. Thalia hurried behind her, insisting she touch up her makeup before meeting their final guests. It was a good thing she had factored in for buffer time since the Orillians arrived within 5 minutes. Once again Fidelia descended the stairs and met the Orillians halfway, curtsied, and greeted her guests warmly.
“Gauleiter Yrillix, I welcome you to Vaplana. I hope your travels have been kind.” She led the Orillian’s up the stairs into her home, keeping a respectful distance while trying not to look too unfriendly. “I am sure you will enjoy our hospitality, I have prepared quarters for you and your staff, and there will be plenty for you to enjoy before the summit tomorrow morning. If you find yourselves in need of anything, please do not hesitate to ask.
The next morning
Fidelia had had her staff prepare rooms on practically the opposite ends of her castle for both parties, and she had drilled into her security staff that would act as escorts to keep the groups as far away from each other as possible unless they were inside the chamber she had prepared for the summit. She would not allow any unsupervised incidents to happen on her turf. So far things had gone well, the groups had been kept apart. Until now.
Fidelia stood at the centre of a large oak table, and she welcomed both parties into the room. They entered from opposite sides, which was a key feature as to why she had chosen this specific room in the first place. She could feel the tension in the air as the representatives both took their seats. This was going to be her biggest challenge yet.
“I again thank you both for taking the time to join me here today. I hope we can openly discuss our differences, and come to an agreement suitable for everyone. Who would like to start?”
Eiasten was cordial and friendly with the Queen as she greeted him. He had been to Vaplana and met with Fidelia several times, especially given the close relationship of their two nations. He grinned and bowed.
"Thank you, your majesty, I can only hope these talks herald something truly groundbreaking. I must commend you for trying something so brash at a time like this, but I am even more surprised that you managed to get the Orillians to attend" He chuckled before making his way inside. The Union delegation, made up of aids, security, ambassadors, ministers and more settling in for the night and discussing topics, potential outcomes and more as the Vaplanan waiters delivered excellent food and drink.
But Yrillix was much colder.
"My travels were adequate your majesty. However, we have much to prepare for this summit, we cannot partake in any festivities. Given we are on the brink of war thanks to the nations that you yourself are close to, we must do everything we can to try avoiding it. I thank you for your offer none the less" She did not bow to Fidelia and the Orillian delegation made up of many guards, aids and robots kept close to one another, not interacting much with the Vaplanans and even going so far as to refuse service. On the grounds of possible diplomatic espionage.
Regardless, the next morning both sides were there early, Eiasten and several Union officials walked into the room and took their seats, nodding in welcome to Madam Yrillix and several Orillian aids who, reluctantly did the same.
"Thank you for offering to host this event." Yrillix commented.
"Yes, your hospitality as always is impeccable your majesty. I would like to begin if possible?" Eiasten raised a hand to be polite. He did not get any refusal from the Orillians "Given the state of things and the now guaranteed force of Coronans heading towards the corridor I believe it in both SAGA and CONA interest to stop them. While I of course do not speak for the whole of SAGA like you do for CONA I would propose a truce of sorts. That we may pull together to defend against the Coronan threat, in return, colonials may once again be allowed to conduct themselves in the corridor for mining" It was a long shot, but Eiasten was trying.
“You are correct in that the Coronan force Is a threat to all of us, and that should they monopolise the corridor we would all be in dire straits. But I have no guarantee that SAGA would stick to its word, or not try to take the corridor for itself. I do not control Aedleshaven, the corridor is their territory”
“It is neutral territory, open galactic space. That is how it is treated in every ratified treaty ever written. While I cannot talk for all of SAGA I can speak for the Union and all of its allies, and that we will use our influence to ensure our word is kept”
“Those treaties were ratified by colonial parties with no inclusion to Aedleshaven, they have claimed rights over that region from their forefathers in ancient times. As such we recognise those claims.” Yrillix was clearly being obtuse. One of the Union staff spoke up.
“If another native laid claim to your territory and had longer ancestral claim, would you simply give it up?” The Orillians seemed insulted.
“Of course not. Don’t be absurd, I won’t be baited into ideological discussions with a nation which heralded the biggest calamity of our age”
“With all due respect Madam Yrillix, you are the one who is happily gunning for this war and riling up hatred against us-“
“That is Gauleiter Yrillix to you President Eiasten”
The gnawing feeling of hopelessness in Fidelia’s stomach was not getting any better for finally having her guests seated together and discussing current affairs. In fact, she had the most awful feeling as if this summit was definitely not helping relations at all. It had only been a matter of minutes and useless bickering had already broken out. If she didn’t step in now and steer the conversation away from point-scoring this peace talk would go down in history as the shortest and most useless, ever.
“Treaties can always be renegotiated, and Aedleshaven's input in those talks would be most helpful in breaking this deadlock. If they truly do wish to claim the corridor as theirs they would be within their right to control who enters their territory, however, it is within everyone’s interests to keep the corridor open to as many groups as possible. That includes Aedleshaven. If Orillia could use its influence as Aedleshaven's ally to help negotiate this matter the galaxy would be taken one step away from economic disaster, and I’m sure Orillia’s reputation would be given a boost from such actions. Would you consider this course of action Gauleiter Yrillix?”
Having offered a hopefully agreeable solution on the corridor issue Fidelia wished to move the conversation back to the one nugget of common ground between the two parties.
“Although, discussing the specifics of territorial claims was not the goal of this summit. It is admitted that both sides have a common goal in preventing the Coronan threat. Should we not attempt to find a middle ground so you may both work together to prevent Corona from establishing a foothold in the Corridor and proceed from there? You may find that in working together you discover you have more in common than expected.”
Fidelia really was clutching at straws here. Madame Yrillix and the other Orillians really were as stubborn as she had been told, and she was beginning to feel as though all of the reason and compassion in the galaxy would not change their course now. But she was still determined to try as hard as she could to promote peace like her father would have if he was in her place today.
“No colonial power would wish to see Aedleshaven negotiate for its ancient claims, we may have influence, but we do not control Aedleshaven your majesty. I cannot force them into diplomacy or to open the corridor.”
“We would very much be open to negotiations with Aedleshaven and more than willing to listen to their claims. I am sure many in the galaxy would even be happy to pay a levy on material and Ancerium mining in the corridor. That way they would benefit massively economically and allow us to still keep our economies intact, even harbouring much better relations” Eiasten replied quickly. The Unioners nodding to themselves.
“And what if they refuse such? What if they truly want the corridor as their ancestral rights?” Yrillix added.
“Then we will intervene, so that over half the galaxy does not collapse into war, chaos and death for trillions. It really is that simple Gauleiter”
“Again imposing your wants on others as typical as ever”
“With all due respect, you talk like Capitol and the APP. Ever eager to champion rights for every individual nation and yet when that interferes with another and that nation takes action to defend its own future you seem radically offended”
“We are nothing like that colonial farce of a power block, we champion native rights, not colonisers”
“But you will refuse to work with us to overcome the greater crisis? As her majesty just pointed out we have a common threat. Why not remove it before we start going for each others throats, our combined forces will be more than enough to end the Coronans” Yrillix snorted.
“We will not be openly firing on your ships unless you move against Aedleshaven. I will agree that our forces will engage the Coronans and defend the corridor, but they will not be integrated into any joint assault. If you engage at the same time as us all the better, but we will not work as a joint entity. That is the most I can promise”
“Of course not, Madam Yrillix, I never intended to suggest you force another sovereign state into diplomacy. I was merely suggesting a potential solution to the current economic crisis that both sides may wish to investigate. That scenario would definitely require Aedleshaven’s presence at the table to solve, so I suggest we move onto matters that are within our abilities to solve today.”
Fidelia looked relieved that at least Eiasten seemed to be on her wavelength. His willingness to compromise, even to his own detriment, restored some of The Queen’s faith in sentient life. However, that faith was knocked out of Fidelia immediately upon the swift return to bickering. Her father and his team of diplomats had made hosting negotiations look so easy when she was growing up, only now was she beginning to realise just how much tact and skill he possessed to handle matters like this. Maybe she should have left this task to her own diplomats… But a task as important as this required the authority only a Queen could bring to the table.
“While I am by no means an expert on military strategy, I do know that organising a joint assault against a common threat would be a much more efficient use of resources than both sides engaging their own fleets separately. Madam, is it not in the best interests of your nation and those who follow your lead that you deploy your resources in the most efficient way? Thus saving ships, and more importantly the lives of soldiers, for your other endeavours. Prime Minister Eiasten is offering you the opportunity to save yourself much war material by working together on eliminating this threat, and if I were in your position I would cast aside my moral objections in a heartbeat if it saves the lives of those I am responsible for. Is this cause really worth throwing so much away needlessly for?”
“It is a cause that will see the people of this galaxy no longer downtrodden. You forget your majesty with all due respect how many Billions died at the hands of the Immortal Empire, Capitol, High Imperium and more all because they simply got in their way? No. That should never be allowed, it should never be the natives cast down, ignored and left to suffer. I will agree to a ceasefire in Aedleshaven in regard to striking Corona. But no more, should SAGA forces attack us or move to interfere in Aedleshaven we will use lethal force” Yrillix seemed to be putting her foot down.
“Do you wish to then accept the Billions of colonials who died from those nations too? Of those who have died to Corona, Palm Mirdiff and the like? Come now Gauleiter we can play the blame game all day. I am not interested in who is at fault I am interested in fixing the problem” Eiasten emphasized “Now I fully agree to those terms. However, I must ask that you yourself ask Aedleshaven to open negotiations. We are absolutely willing to resolve this peacefully and jointly take down Corona, even to jointly take down Yog Narr. With CONA and SAGA forces together we could jointly end both massive threats to the galaxy here and now, and save the lives of trillions”
“Idealistic words. You say you are not interested in the meat of the matter and yet you naively think that your own people have suffered more than those crushed under the boot of your own oppression.” She paused “I will talk to Aedleshaven. I make no guarantees however, and should SAGA move against us or the corridor we will be ready for them. That is all I will agree to for now”
“Then I am happy for now, and hope that we may meet again with Aedleshaven involved. You may hate us Gauleiter, but we do not want conflict”
“And yet you have been the center of conflict for countless decades, oh members of the Union of Worlds. I thank your majesty for hosting this… Thrilling endeavour. I shall take my leave. Good day” With that the Orillian delegation seemed to neatly get up and leave the room. Eiasten sat back into his chair and gave out a long exhale.
“Thank you, your majesty. That at least got somewhere.”
At mention of the Immortal empire’s historical acts of terror Fidelia bristled with rage. She was well aware of what they had done, to her people to boot, and to have it insinuated that she had forgotten the billions of lives lost so pointlessly made Fidelia mad. Very mad. Her family had fought and sacrificed to ensure a tragedy of that scale would never impact her people again, it would be her life’s work to ensure that legacy continued. Never again would an entire generation of Vaplanans be lost to war. Not on her watch.
“I am well aware of the acts you speak of, my nation has been a victim of those acts. My people bled and suffered, and still mourn the losses of those sacrificed to this day. And yet you do not see us judgeing all members of one group for the acts of a select few. That would be unjust. And to start yet another war based on those judgements is, to be honest, going to have the same impact as those historic atrocities.” Fidelia couldn’t help but let a little of her frustration slip, she had to resort to digging her nails into her palms under the table to pull herself together and regain some composure. She took a breath and continued.
“I am pleased you are willing to hold off your attack for now, and even more pleased you will approach Aedleshaven with our offer. I beg of you, please do think carefully about those you will be sacrificing to achieve your goals. However noble a cause you fight for, sacrificing innocent lives to achieve it will never be justifiable.”
As the Orillians stood to leave Fidelia sighed. It was always a long shot to try and make peace, especially when tensions were so high and so many had already been dragged in. But at least she had the courage to try. It may come back and bite her yet, but she would have to jump that hurdle when it came. She had so much else to worry about for now.
“I thank you for attending, Gauleiter Yrillix, and apologise if you feel this has been a waste of your time. I bid you safe travel.” When all of the Orillians had finally filed out Fidelia finally felt a little more relaxed, being in friendly company now. She sighed. It seemed Eiasten was just as exasperated as she was.
“Let’s hope she sticks to her word. I would have liked us to make a little more progress than that, but honestly? I’m surprised she even turned up, let alone made the few concessions she did. I appreciate your cooperation in all this, Eiasten. I hope I haven’t wasted your time chasing a wild fantasy.”
Yrillix seemed to paused before turning to the Queen.
"Ensuring the continued existence and freedom of countless lives across the galaxy is a worthwhile effort. I am sure had your own nation not been given handouts from its close proximity to the Union, we would be in a very similar position right now. Good day to you your Majesty"
With that she finally left.
The Union delegation seemed to relax immediately. Eiasten running a hand through his hair.
"I doubt she will but we can certainly hope. I agree with you however, that was more than I thought we would get. I didn't think she would even come here regardless but its done now. I can only wish that she does indeed convinced Aedleshaven to negotiate, so many lives could be saved" He sighed.
"I thank you for the hospitality and the attempt to negotiate however. I must also reassure you and reaffirm that the Union will uphold its defence agreements to your nation. We will protect you should the Orillians or their lapdogs come knocking. However..." He rubbed his chin clearly knowing it would not necessarily go down well.
"Given the state of things it may very well be a good idea to look into defending your own borders your majesty, purely for protection"
Fidelia couldn’t help but groan a little under her breath. She knew Eiasten would probably try and broach this subject before this was all over, but she had remained a little hopeful she could avoid the topic completely.
She understood Eiasten’s point; Vaplana was in a very vulnerable position. She was not blind to that fact. Honestly, thinking about how dependant Vaplana was on her neighbours and how vulnerable they were currently had kept Fidelia up at night for a very long time, since the first whispers of conflict had found their way to her. Which was why this topic was a sore one for her. She wanted to stay true to her principles and morality, but what would they cost her, and more importantly her people?
“It is a weight off my shoulders that you plan to stay true to our agreements, and for all the Union has done I am eternally grateful. My nation owes you all a great deal.” Fidelia felt a little uncomfortable for what she was about to say, so feeling restless she stood from her chair and made her way to the window. Looking upon her beautiful gardens would calm her enough to make her admissions.
“I understand your concerns, as much as it pains me so. I am well aware of the position I have put my people in. However, I feel as if my hands are tied. Vaplana is pacifist, and I do not intend for that fact to change. I remain hopeful our neutral stance will protect us, at least for a while, although I am not stupid enough to blindly believe that the players in this war will follow the rules. If I take steps to create a military, which is undoubtedly the defences you mention, I am disrespecting the sacrifices my people, and my father, made to make Vaplana the nation it is today. I cannot ignore the will of my people, Eiasten, I do hope you understand.”
Eiasten held up a hand "Nonsense, you don't owe us anything. We are merely doing what we do for our allies and out of friendship. A nation that does not pledge to renew its binding contracts in a time of crisis is not worthy of its diplomacy" He chuckled before listening to the Queen again.
He expected a reply like this. In a way he respected her greatly, she was just like him. Unwavering in his support to avoid conflict at all costs. But he knew that he had been forced to step away from that path, now he would face war regardless as it was forced upon the Union. He wondered how Fidelia would cope with such a prospect herself. But while he respected her stalwart belief he also saw her as naïve. War was indeed coming, and while Vaplana was indeed pacifist it was seen as tied to the Union. A prime target for CONA raids.
"I do understand your majesty, as a man of peace myself I have tried to avoid this war at every turn. But I must say that it was forced onto my nation regardless of my morals and outlook. I do not tell you to raise an armed forces and fight at the Unions side. Merely look to creating a defensive organisation, one that could protect your nation if it is in crisis, for whatever reason we cannot respond in time. You could even ensure that it is forbidden to operate outside of your space, and handpick those who join it. I have no doubt with your funds available you could create a small but extremely efficient defender. While also placating your own morals and ensuring the sacrifices are not in vein" He then smiled and shrugged.
"I'm sorry I am blabbering again. I am sure you are well aware of the threats you face, you do not need me reminding you"
“I appreciate your understanding Eiasten, and do not feel the need to apologise for your so-called blabbering.” Fidelia smiled, playfully scolding Eiasten made her feel much more at ease. They had always gotten along well, and as much as she feared the ideas he was proposing she knew it was good advice, like always. Having someone in the same position as her to talk to was both refreshing and uplifting. While Thalia and the rest of her advisors were lovely and helpful, none of them truly understood the burden and responsibility she carried.
“The galaxy seems to be an increasingly hostile place for people like us who value peace. If we stand by our morals we risk being taken advantage of and torn down, but if we stand up for ourselves we cast aside all we have ever stood for. Your recommendation of a defensive force, for example. Theoretically, it is perfect, I protect my people and ensure there is no aggression from my side. However, establishing such a force I fear will be the beginning of a very slippery slope for my nation. What would happen to such a force when I am gone? There is no guarantee that it would even remain within my control during my lifetime.”
Sensing the topic was getting a little heavy she decided to wrap up her thoughts, not wanting to drag this out much longer. She would much rather spend her time showing her visitors all the peace and splendour Vaplana had to offer, especially in such trying times a breath of fresh air could ease so much.
“Speculation aside, I do take your recommendations seriously. I know there is much risk in relying on others, as you said what were to happen if you could not come to our rescue in time if we did become a target? It seems I have much to consider. I thank you for your counsel on this matter, Eiasten. Now business here is concluded, may I interest you and your party in a stroll around the gardens before you take your leave? Vaplana is so refreshing this time of year, it would be criminal not to share it with you.”
Eiasten, sensing that he had possibly pushed too far and that Fidelia seemed to have been brought down by such a prospect of a long term political ploy, decided to step back and break the line of topic. He nodded at her offer.
"I allocated additional time should the diplomatic talks go on longer than I dared hope, it would be foolish of me to refuse a tour around the gardens and not have it be using that time. It may be the last refreshing moment of peace I have in a long time. I accept your Majesty, lead the way. Let us forget about the war for the time being"
"Let us just enjoy nature"
The Queen sat at her desk, stressed out of her mind.
