“We've got a Black Hawk down, we've got a Black Hawk down.”
Shattered Empire: Fallen Bird
“Six-one going down, Six-one going down. Hold on! Just hold on there! We’re---AAAAHHHH---“
---------------------
“Ladies and gentlemen, we have a very delicate situation right now. A helicopter designated as Black Hawk 6-1 has gone down near the city of Moord. Pelemin will have to wait just a little. Our priority is the rescue of the two pilots and two crew chiefs as well as six troops. This is not a mission that I want you all to take for granted. They have landed near a hostile city and they will be overwhelmed and either captured or killed. We cannot take any chances and we will get them out, dead or alive.”
“The Admiral is right, you all. We will have to make Pelemin wait. While I will allow most of our boys already on the way to Pelemin to keep going, I must ask you to send detachments towards Moord. Here is the plan. Take a look at the map. This is where our bird went down. These places are where I need us to stop and secure our territory. Clear?”
“You’re clear. I want the armor and the infantry from the Naval Infantry Corps and the Fifth Tank Battalion plus the Spears to get on with it. We have little time now. General, can you take this?”
“Yes. I’ll also be on the way. We will leave no men behind.”

Music for the readers:
Late Afternoon…
Battery after battery of heavy UWA high powered long range guns and howitzers fired at every minute, covering the advance of the trucks, APCs and IFVs as well as tanks of the combined forces of the Centurions, Spears, Naval Infantry and Queens Division. Leading them was, of course, the hellish General Cascade. On top of an APC, she herself manned a heavy machine gun turret alongside an ordinary soldier in another HMG turret. They were now ten minutes away from reaching the city of Moord.
Following behind them in the sky were the helicopters Lyrebird and Junkers. They were escorting not only them but also a dozen helicopters. Each of these helicopters carried ten troops, all of them volunteers from the Brown Stallions. It was a part of an agreement between Captain Hospie from the Brown Stallions and Admiral Searing, a friend of the overall commander of the Brown Stallions. Apparently, this was because the Brown Stallions won a bet long before and wanted to get into combat in helicopters.
So on they went, along the roads into Moord while the survivors of the helicopter crash on the other side of the city hung on. Desperately, they used the helicopter and the surrounding area as cover, fighting back against waves of angry Auraxii and the criminals and insurgents that controlled the city. It seemed that both Moord and Pelemin were in the way of the UWA, being incredibly hostile.
And the UWA tried again to understand why.
The troops on the roads could see the parts of the city that were getting hammered by the UWA artillery while radio men were constantly attempting to respond to the cries for help from the downed helicopter. They were really running out of time and the radio men did their best to keep them talking. The vehicles were all running against their own engines, going so fast that if they stopped, they just could not. Only slowing down was an option and right now, they could not even do that.
And the UWA did not, at this point, care about not being noticed. Oh hell no, this wasn’t the time. Let them see us and hear us, the UWA thought, we’re here for our girls and boys.
Five minutes in and the radio transmissions were getting incredibly desperate. UWA bombardment of the edges of the city that they were approaching became heavier. The helicopters split off to drop off their troops near the city but not too close so that they could avoid anti-aircraft fire. The rest continued, finally reaching the first buildings of the city, the gates.
The first vehicle, a Contestar, was greeted by fire from a TR8 “Revenger”
It did not go so well for the Contestar. The MBT took several 50mm rounds to their turret ring, the Auraxii simply penetrating that weak point as the crew inside was turned and burned into human and alien sawdust. The tank burst into flames as the rounds also struck the ammunition and caused an explosion that forced the turret up into the sky by a few meters. Then the turret fell on the hull and dropped to the ground on its side.
The rest of the UWA convoy was hit by either Auraxii machine gun fire or heavy guns and rockets. Some APCs and IFVs were disabled or destroyed while the rest simply moved around those that got hit and entered the city by force, smashing the damned gates open as those who chose to get out and fight did so, shooting at the enemy defenders with their rifles and machine guns. Heavy troops launched rocket propelled grenades at the walls of the city, targeting the places from where the enemy was engaging them.
On the other hand, the Lyrebird and the Junkers started to circle the city, shooting missiles and rockets as they stayed out of MANPADs range. Even cannon fire helped as the UWA breached the city gates, overcoming the Auraxii attempting to fight them on the bridges over the river.
The artillery finally finished, the walls significantly weakened as the gates were now under UWA control. Troops and vehicles mixed with one another, the latter providing fire support and cover for the troops as they moved deeper into the city, assaulting the shanty town and the places of the craftsmen and the apartments. They took care to avoid the temple, respecting it as a holy place that should never be used as a military objective.
Right now, all the differences between UWA units did not matter. What mattered was that for this battle, the General and her officers, even those associated with the Admiral, were in the fight and they had to take care of it.
---------------------
Client shouted “AGAIN! HIT THE TARGET!” As he saw the Auraxii tank attempt to flee the battle. The rear was exposed. It was his gunners chance. The gunner did well, firing the round that went down into the Auraxii tanks engine and caused it to catch fire. The tank slowed and stopped as Client ordered his other tanks to move in and end it for good. The tank was soon subjected to round after round in its rear, sides and turret. It was gone.
But at the price of the lead tank and Titan from before. Client shook his head and continued to fight, leading his tank and the rest of his unit around the city, providing flanking forces with the firepower they need to punch through Auraxii defenses.
Through the fires that burned on the ground and upon the faces of buildings, against the smoke that rose into the skies and over bodies of Auraxii or UWA troops and insurgents, the tanks crawled quickly, shooting at any hostile forces they spotted by themselves or their infantry support.
Major Liliana shot the Auraxii insurgent that lay down on the floor of an apartment where she and her men had engaged a few MG teams and snipers. The major then kicked the body away and wiped her bloody boot with a rag before getting out of the apartment with some of her men. On her head were two squads. The rest of her girls were out there, securing the market and the opposite gates.
Liliana ordered them “All right. Let’s get to the fort. We have to take it so that the Auraxii won’t think of using that as their last stand.”
The marines of the two squads agreed, following her as they left the area for the fort (the castle on the map) and attempted to take it. They did so with little resistance, seeing the Auraxii that were in it were only families. The major felt sorry for them, telling them “We’ll take care of you. Don’t worry.” But towards her men, she ordered “All right, you bastards, get this fort secured! Radio the rest of the girls! We can’t be alone here!”
---------------------
Natali Silvergraft howled as much as her men did as they charged the damned Auraxii positions that were blocking the road for them to get to the downed helicopter. She led the charge with her rifle blessed with its long bayonet, the armor she was wearing protecting her as she and at least 30 men were sprinting against the Auraxii machine guns and rifles. It was a devastating charge that led the Spears to a victory, breaking through their center and filling the overwhelmed Auraxii flanks with rifle fire and grenades.
Natali did not stop, leading some more of her men through the road, teams of men splitting off to clear the buildings of Auraxii troops.
---------------------
Andrea Mora laughed at the enemy as they got turned into sawdust by the unceasing fire of the machine gun teams of her unit. Her battalion was in this fight and this was amazing for her. A sadistic woman, she did her duty of killing her own hostiles with her rifle, choosing to clear the roofs with it or bayoneting any sorry Auraxii that found themselves facing her too closely.
The Battalion of the City was rushing along with the marines and the Spears towards the downed helicopter. As they did, the Lyrebird and the Junkers finally were able to come around, strafing anyone too unlucky to get caught in their fire. They completed their strafing missions and let the Battalion come forth, leading the first UWA troops to rescue the downed helicopter survivors.
---------------------
"General Cascade, how did the battle go?"
"It went well. The survivors were saved. The enemy was destroyed. The city is under our control."
"You sound odd. Did everything go really well?"
'Yes. Just a little shaken."
"Why? What happened, Cascade?"
"We have civilian casualties."
"Oh dear..."
