Diplomat Denise Alexander was waiting in one of the many hangers on board of Void Rock Six station. The Hospitallars had been invited for further diplomatic talks in an attempt to boost relations and cooperation between the two nations. Alexander was keen for her second meeting with them, there was a lot of mystery surrounding them and it intrigued not only her but many others in the Alliance.
The Hospitalar response was a strange one, a single lone probe about the size of a small horse transitioned into system at the mouth of a wormhole, flashing red lights and sensor stalks all that gave the perfect sphere any form of noticeable silhouette.
"bring to meeting point"
The pod plays a small message on repeat continuously and unceasingly.
“Ma’am, we’re picking up a transmission from an object in space I think it’s for you?” an announcement came through the stations intercom system followed by the message received from the object.
“Well bring it into the hanger, either they want us to see it or they’ll be following shortly behind it.” Alexander ordered courteously
A small freighter was commandeered and flown out to the object bringing it on board and then dropping it off in the hanger where the Alliance delegation awaited the Hospitallars arrival.
The probe shimmers and shakes the outer hull falling apart, sensor prongs clattering against the floor as it turns to silver dust coalescing into a small pool surrounded by the solid remains of the more technical aspects of the probe.
Rising from the sandy silver substance bones and organs begin to form an entire human body stitched together before the TDA like some macabre horror show, soon the loose collection of human like extremities grows clothing of white robes and sleek medical gloves before finally terminating in a broad collar framing a young mans white face, green eyes and blond hair shimmering into place.
The Alliance delegation had a looks of confusion and mistrust on their faces as the transformation process happened, only one person Denise didn’t have such a look she turned to her fellow delegation members and assured them that all was well the Hospitallars were a bit strange like that.
“Hello there, I trust your journey here was pleasant?” Denise turned to the Hospitallars that had formed and asked politely
The Hospitallar nods excitedly their hair bobbing on their head as they did.
"Yes it was fun, travelling along the soul veins is always such an experience!"
They gush.
"Are you ALL human."
He enquires eyes darting about the room.
Again the Alliance delegation was phased by such a question all but Denise who had dealt with the Hospitallars and their peculiar questions before.
“Yes I assure you everyone here is human. No lizard people in disguise or camouflaging against walls for that matter.” She said assuring them
They grin wide and settle slightly a look of wonderment on their eyes.
"So many!"
They clap their hands together and grin.
"So shall we begin?"
“Of course come this way we have a room prepared.” Denise gestured to the door.
The two delegations went through the stations internal transit system to a large conference room. two armed guards opened the large double doors for everyone once inside the heads of the Alliance delegation took seats at one end with their aides in seats behind them against the wall at the head of the table on the Alliance side was Denise.
The lone Hospitallar flops into one of the free seats and looks about curiously for a few seconds.
"Yes of course dear human whatever you need."
“Well for starters we’d like to ask about your mission, last time you said your way of life is to preserve and protect life? So will you be visiting war zones, impoverished planets and the like to help out? Secondly are there more of you when we met you only had the one ship but you yourself aren’t the person I spoke to last time so does that mean there are more ships? And lastly I’d tell you that with you being nomadic and new here that our ports are open to you if you needs them.” Denise said with a smile
"Oh yes we intend to visit warzones."
He nods assuringly.
"And exterminate any we find there in the way that results in the least amount of deaths in the shortest amount of time."
He takes a few seconds to think before answering the second question.
"We have about five hundred or so ships."
“So you eliminate the root cause of the problem that would endanger lives before helping out?” A man in a naval uniform spoke up from the delegation.
He shakes his head.
"Not exactly, we take the course of action that leaves numerically the most amount of people alive at the end of the day, that does not necessarily involve "fixing" the problem per say."
He runs his tongue over his canines and thinks for a second.
"For example say we happened upon a system at war and the two sides conflict threatened to spill out into another much more populated system, math may dictate we simply.... destroy the entire system before its war is capable of spreading."
He crosses his fingers and rest his hands on the table.
"But do not worry the systems death would be quick a simple chronal acceleration of the core sun sending it supernova would ensure no one suffered unduly."
“Obviously that’s an extreme example and do you also try to mediate with opposing sides or do you only take a violent approach” another delegation member spoke up.
"We simply do what we believe to save the most, if that means diplomacy it means diplomacy, if it means extermination then it means extermination.
He replies levelly.
"We have no preference for methodology it is simply whatever is most practical."
“So with such a heavy reliance on algorithm you have no bias against any parties involved? Even if they are your allies?” The man in navy uniform spoke again.
He shakes his head.
"Not entirely, allies tend to receive slightly more weighting due to the simple fact that having others to call on will make saving lives later on much easier, our formula is mot applied to individual situations you see it is a constantly running consistently updated algorithm that accounts for possible future events."
He gestures to the delegation.
"For example violating our NAP would damage our reputation making people lest trusting of us making it harder to be seen as mediators in good faith and as such make it harder to diplomatically halt future wars in the area thus endangering more lives."
“So you are able to remain committed to diplomatic deals and agreements even with this algorithm?” Denise finally piped up
"As long as you do not engage in activities that raise your potential for preserving life above your likelihood to take life above that potential we will honour any deals we make."
“So we could be defending ourselves from a hostile invader and when we start doing too good of a job you’d show up and start attacking us as well?” the Navy officer said sternly
The Hospitallar tilts their head and stares at the officer a few seconds.
"Of course not, the aggressor has a much higher likelihood of repeating their actions against others do they not? as such why would we aid and abet someone with a demonstrable habit of beginning wars of aggression?"
They look to Denise a smile upon their face.
"You worry that one day unannounced and as if by random you may find us knocking at your door for reasons you cannot comprehend do you not?"
“Well… yes, from what you have been saying it seems that any action that costs lives could provoke you to attack us, especially if we’re in the middle of fighting a war. I’m sure you understand our concerns and if you could alleviate these concerns, it’d be greatly appreciated.” Denise replied.
"Reputation matters."
He responds simply.
"If others see us trampling over our agreements and ignoring our promises how are we to act as moderators in good faith? To be trusted to honour surrenders and cease fires, put simply the amount of lives damaging our reputation has the potential for ending is enormous and as such the threat to life you would have to present would have to be similarly huge."
He smiles and tilts his head.
"And no offence to any hear but from what we have seen of you... well let me just say i doubt we will have to worry much about exceeding the threshold."
“Alright, well does this satisfy everyone here?” Denise asked the other members of the Alliance delegation. She was met with a series of nods and spoken agreements.
“Well, everyone here seems content with your clarification. So I think we can move on. Before I go on however is there anything you wanted to ask?”
"You wouldn't happen to be hiding a galaxy ending super weapon in your pocket would you?"
The medic asks jovially a smile playing across its face.
"But actually I do have a few, to begin with what is your system of governance? Your lifespan and your position on genocide?"
“Our system of governance is a democratically elected state, every position of power is given to the winner of an election, senators, congressmen and the president are examples of this. However we have a stratified voting system and only those that do a term of service in the military can vote. This came from the founders which fought and died for our independence from the tyrannical lords of old. To quote one of the founders: “It is not every persons destiny to fight for their nation and we won’t expect them to, but those that do choose to fight for their nation will be given the opportunity to help shape its course.” As for life span modern medicine allows a human to live for about hundred seventy-eighty years give or take. And for your last question we do not condone genocide and we will not and have not ever conducted such an atrocity.” Denise said proudly
The Hospitalar nods slowly his face contemplative.
"Democracy, we should expect you to be slower to react to events than others then."
He pauses his nodding and looks to the ceiling a few seconds gaze vacant.
"Your policy on genocide, a thought experiment, what if you were to face an enemy bent upon your destruction that had set every single part of itself to your death, a hive mind for example?"
Denise looked onto her constituents for their opinions and thoughts on the question given to them. They murmured among themselves for a while discussing the question in detail although hypothetical it could possibly become a reality given the nature of this galaxy they were in. They came to a consensus eventually that, they would have to put the safety of the Alliance first and foremost and having a constant threat that seeks destruction couldn’t be allowed to survive.
“Well, we have come to agreement and given that this is a hypothetical situation it could potentially come to be a reality and if the only way to stop them was to commit genocide we would do it. Our survival would be first and foremost and a threat like that couldn’t be left alive.” Denise spoke sorrowfully
"An acceptable answer, we must confess we have committed such an act."
The white robed figure head responds with a non committal wave of his hand.
"In a situation not to dissimilar to the one i just put forth, will this be an issue?"
“Hmm, well it’d be hypocritical of us to judge on such an action when we just admitted that we would do the same in your situation. So no I don’t think it will be a problem.” She replied
"We are now satisfied and happy to move on as you earlier suggested."
He grins clapping his hands together.
“Yes, moving on we were wondering if you’d allow us to study you in-depth some of our R&D people are racking their brains trying to figure you from the few readings we have from our first encounter.” She said pointing over to several well dressed people in suits and one person with a mask, and a lab coat that came down to their elbows.
"Study me?"
He tilts his head.
"In what way may i ask? I can bring myself fully here if you'd like as most of me is out of system at the moment."
“Most of you is out of system?” Denise asked curiously as the rest of the delegation put on a series of confused looks as well.
"Oh yes of course, you aren't talking to "me" as i am you're talking to a small part of me, i'm a fair bit bigger than this."
He answers politely gesturing to himself.
"My proper name is HSS Scalpel to the cancer "
“See, this is why we want to study its nothing invasive just a few scans to look at your structure and monitoring of you in your day to day life to see what you are all about.” Denise said reassuringly
"I suppose i can allow such a thing, though i must warn you observing our day to day routine may prove incredibly boring."
“Well, that’s what the boys and girls at R&D what to do though, so we’ll see what they have to say about it. Anyways the last item of scientific data we’d like is if you could regenerate my other leg so that our doctors can view the process from start to finish and get any data they can. Is this something you’re ok with?”
"Of course it would be my pleasure, assuming of course she has been eating enough to regain her lost body mass."
“Excellent, well no time like the present as they say.” Denise said with delight as she removed her bionic leg.
Several doctors set up their scanners around where she had here stump rested as they keenly awaited the Hospitaller to work his magic.
The Hospitalar smiles and nods rising from his seat slowly as his eyes wander over the stump an appraisal of the damage and the womens fat content already beginning.
"I see you've been eating well since we last met."
As the gestalt talks he moves forward phasing through the table like a ghost stopping to the womens left.
With a reassuring smile.
The room stood gobsmacked as they watched the gestalt simply walked through the table. No one had any words except for a scientific advisor who exclaimed, “How?!”
The creature tilts its head a soft smile on its face as it shifts its attention from stump to scientist.
"Oh i simply stepped into one of the many thousands of crossing dimensions that criss cross our own for a moment shifting my phase state to one different to the tables ensuring we did not interact as i crossed the space it occupied."
“Oh it’s that simple I see” the science advisor replied light heartedly
"Have you ever noticed shadows out of the corner of your eyes? Missing persons you cant quite explain? Shapes that disappear as soon as you try to focus on them?"
His cheery tone remains throughout his questions but the tilt of his head the glint of his eyes speak of a certain manic insistence.
"So what you're saying is that we should have interdiction permanently turned?" one of the delegation members piped in
"well.... if anything I had just said was true then yes you would"
The young looking man smiles mischievously as he sets a hand onto the stumpy remains of his patients legs.
"Very funny, had us going there for a second." one of the scientists smiled although in his head he marked it down as something to look into
"Ooh, Watch closely everyone it's nothing short of awe inspiring what's about to happen next" Denise prepared herself for what was about to happen
The Hospitalar smiles at the humans enthusiasm, he was glad that his skills bought them such joy.
The young Gestalt runs its fingers up the stump as it begins to identify the savaged remains of nerves and artery’s, his fingers creep up further as he uses his tactile senses to examine the musculature above the wound creeping to the inner thigh as he finds the beginning of the atrophication around the groinal muscular group.
Slowly he begins to set the bodies systems into over drive as cells begin to turn to rumours upon the stump, cancers incredible growth rate lending well to rapid regrowth, as the tumours expanded the Medic hid them under glowing light lest he distress his patient, flesh growing from tumour as he began restitching the leg back together and in a matter of seconds he had worked his way down to her foot, the women finding herself bereft of much of her fat cells but up a leg, as well as conspicuous set of blue cat ears poking out from under her hair, the Hospitalars were after all children and children did tend to play many a prank.
"W-What's this?" Denise said touching the pair of ears that had formed on top of her head
"This didn't happen last time! is this some kind of side effect?" She asked extremely confused the rest of the delegation was too busy admiring the leg which had just been re grown to be of assistance
The gestalts tilts its head smiling.
"Cat ears captain, does the TDA not have cats?"
"I mean yes, but cat ears on people is only something you see in a red light district. can you get rid of them?"
"Oh come now captain I think they look quite cute."
The younglings face was plastered with what most would consider a "shit eating grin" his unnaturally white teeth reflecting the rooms light.
"They will fall off in a few hours they're just cartilage and dead skin after all."
Denise wasn't amused by the fact that it was some sort of prank but at least it was only temporary. for the time being however she borrowed a cap off of one of the guards outside to hide them.
"Well, that wraps up anything from our end do you have anything you'd like to ask of us?"
"War games!"
The boy shouts excitedly clapping his hands together.
"We would like to test your military capabilities so we know what to expect from you in the field."
Denise nodded her head in agreement and looked over the the delegation to see a similar response from the army officials present.
“We can get behind that, it’ll be a good opportunity to see how our tactics and doctrine stack up against different foes.” She answered gleefully
“Of course, from what I’ve seen so far a 10 to 1 ratio for forces should prove a good starting point for a balanced encounter.... bah the details can be worked out later.”
He smiles waving his hands dismissively, what a productive day!
"We'll see how this ratio of yours turns out when we meet." One of the army officials chuckled
"Alright well if that's all for today we'll get into contact with each other to organise these war games." Denise smiled as she escorted the gestalt back to the hanger.
