The TDASV Forward Progress was making its way through the galactic east there mission was to fill in the blanks they had on the maps kindly given to them by the Dectrose Empire. It was approaching an uncharted system that would serve as a ‘Home Base’ for its corvette squadron as they surveyed star systems within a radius of several light years. However when they emerged through their wormhole they noticed that the system was inhabited scans showed what was a mining operation in progress. Hans Crove the TDA Diplomat on board was immediately called to the CIC to make contact.
“So, Captain what do we have today?” Crove said with a hint of enthusiasm
“Well looks like a mining op, no apparent threat so I haven’t raised the alert level. Anyways if were done here I gotta get back to work.” Captain Burke said bluntly his disdain for Crove still hadn’t dissipated. Crove grabbed a comms headset and began a broadcast on all frequencies.
“Greetings fellow space travellers, I’m Diplomat Hans Crove of the Three Domains Alliance. We are exploring this area of space as it is not charted on our maps so if you would kindly excuse the intrusion into your territory and I would also like to ask that we open up diplomatic talks between our great nations.” He was polite and professional when he spoke and minded his word choice.
The appearance of an unknown ship had created a slight buzz of activity amongst the mining ships. The threat of a forward scouting party for hostile aliens or pirates was ever present and the crews were acutely aware of such a possibility.
Once the message was received from the ship, the activity slowed somewhat as the operations leader prepared and sent a response informing the ship of the imminent arrival of a fleet and admiral to lead diplomatic operations. He advised that any attempt to contact the mining fleet would be met with silence.
Shortly afterwards a streak of bright light burst from a position near the mining fleet as the 3rd Difae fleet dropped out of FTL. A message followed:
“I am Admiral James Yousef of the Thallaj Travellers, captain of the warship TMN Omaira. We understand the intrusion and hold no enmity. We’re happy to begin diplomatic talks immediately. Shall we meet in person or would you prefer to do this across space, Mr. Hans Crove?” Yousef spoke in a professional tone tinged with a diplomatic warmth.
“A pleasure to meet you Admiral Yousef, It would be much to our liking to have the diplomatic meeting in person and we would like to humbly invite you to our ship so we can get started.” Crove maintained his tone and looked over to Captain Burke who met his gaze. Burke knew what Crove wanted to happen so he rolled his eyes and went off to make the necessary preparations.
“That is reasonable. In that case, please prepare for docking and boarding.”
The admiral moved away from the console, nodding to his second in command before swiftly walking towards the hangar bay of the ship. He mentally initiated contact with the fleet’s General and began speaking “General Nassar, please prepare a squad of your finest men to accompany me into this meeting. Ensure we have enough men to crew one of the gunships in case they decide to pull a fast one on us.”
As Yousef neared the thick doors of the hangar it slid open with a hiss and exposed him to the noisy environment beyond. Ensuring he had brought his weapon with him, he continued past the waiting marines and crew, acknowledging the ranking officer and boarded the gunship.
The rest of the complement boarded and settled into their assigned seats as the reactor wound up and they began their burn out the hangar towards the newly encountered aliens.
The Traveller ship was directed into the landing bay and lowered into the primary hanger. There in the hanger were the onlookers of passing crew members as well as the honour guard which were there as a sign of respect to the nation that was coming aboard. Waiting near the ship at the front of the honour guard was Crove and Captain Burke, much to his dismay.
Admiral Yousef stood tall behind the airlock doors, his posture strong and his hands behind his back. The doors hissed as they began to open and the Admiral began walking abreast with Sergeant Antoun, the soldier placed in command of his guard squad.
“I assume you are Hans Crove?” He said, nodding towards the seemingly happier of the two men in front.
“Yes I am Hans Crove and I assume you are Admiral Yousef?” Crove asked inquisitively
Burke waited for the Honour Guard to return to at ease before he walked up to Crove and Yousef.
“If you’ll excuse my rudeness I have to leave there are certain things that require my attention on board” Burke said in a tone so polite that Crove nearly fell down. Burke then left the hanger.
“Well Admiral if you’ll follow me we have a conference room nearby.” Crove then led Yousef and his entourage to a conference room. Once inside Crove took a seat at the far end of the large table and gestured for the Admiral to take a seat.
Yousef sat back, thinking on his line of questioning before beginning.
“So, the ‘Three Domains Alliance’. Not a typical government form, I assume? Can you tell me a little bit about your nation, at least a cursory overview of the significant features?” He cocked his head slightly as he awaited a response.
“Well our government isn’t unusual, but that’s a matter of perspective. We function as a democratic nation with our officials being voted in by the voters. We started off way back when the old Terran Stella Imperium was still in power our three founding world were part of three different domains each ruled by a lord. They subsequently like many of their kind started a war… this was at the time known simply as the Western Domain War, but it has another name that everyone knows it by the Unification War. They fought each other for decades gaining nothing except piles of dead bodies. Eventually the militaries of each domain revolted executing the nobility and each Domain Lord, Which led to the signing of the Articles of Alliance which brought all Three Domains under the rule of a single government ruled by the people. However to help make political decisions in our nation one must first complete a Term of Service in the Military as only those who are brave enough to fight for their nation should have a say in how its governed. Now down the track about a century or so we find ourselves at war with another imperialist power hell bent on our subjugation and it seems the fighting will never end its already been twenty years and we’re still around so there’s still hope.” Crove half chuckled when he finished speaking
“So I told you a little about my nation, would you be willing to share some about yours?”
“We originate from Earth, or at least we did at some point. The history says that a flotilla and military fleet broke off from Earth during a civil war and settled a nearby system. Due to necessity and resources available, biomechanical implants were the most practical solution to the harsh environment of the new capital. With the atmosphere restrictions out of the way, science prospered and we’ve essentially followed that track ever since.”
Yousef paused and drank, holding the water in his mouth to help rehydrate his drying throat. He had a look that said he was about to continue.
“Our Empire is something of a technocratic monarchy sat on top of a corporatocracy. Our Emperor handles all the macro-scale matters within the empire and has absolute control over all entities within it. His advisors generally handle any micro matters as well as naturally advise him. Outside of the monarchical government independently owned corporations are given a high level of autonomy to work inside the empire, they are governed by laws regarding things like healthcare and worker safety but are largely free to do what they want as long as it benefits the empire.
Our government may also integrate some corporations for its own endeavours, so we have semi-autonomous units within the government itself and do not rely on contractors often.
Otherwise our societies focus strongly on technological prowess, striving to be at the very forefront of development and outfit our military with the very best in equipment.”
Yousef sat back, and reached for the water once again, clearing his throat after putting the glass back down. “So tell me about this imperialist power wanting to subjugate you. Who are they and why would they want subjugation?”
Crove leaned forward onto the table with a frightening look in his eyes.
“They are known as the Royal Federation of Empires and they demand not just our subjugation but our extermination. Not just our government or our fleets but our very way of life and everything we believe. They are the single greatest threat to our existence but… we are also their single greatest enemy. We’re stuck in an unending war for survival and the end is nowhere in sight. I wouldn’t wish this kind of war on anyone it is a fate worse than death” He said Grimly before leaning back into his chair.
"And the reason? To hazard a guess, innate ideological reasons?"
He paused for a second before speaking "Oh, that reminds me. Could you perhaps send what star maps and info you have to our fleet? Especially regarding this United Star Empire. I feel it would be wise to understand an empire of such military determination."
“Yes it is that we simply can’t co-exist with each other but regarding your request, I’m sorry to say this but any intelligence about the USE is classified top secret. I can however assure that they have no presence in this galaxy, which are will to share maps of. And perhaps your nation would be interested in signing a pact of non-aggression with ours as a stepping stone for further relations?” Crove replied calmly as he settled his nerves a bit now with the subject change.
"A non-aggression pact is an agreeable first step towards what will hopefully be a fruitful and productive relationship between our nations.
I'll have the pact sent up the chain and it should be signed within the next few days." Yousef paused jarringly for a second "Well, a few days given you use the 24 hour Earth cycle definition of a day that is." He smiled warmly before speaking again.
"Unless there's something pressing you have in mind or other questions, it appears this might be the end of our little date." he said playfully, tilting his head questioningly.
“Excellent, a non-aggression pact is always a great stepping stone for any nations. Now this might come off as… forward, but we’re forming a new power bloc and your people reside close by to where a majority of the members are. The power bloc in question is the Free Defence Council or FDC for short. The Bloc plans to remain neutral during the Second Ancerious War so attacks carried out by members won’t drag the whole bloc in, but as the name implies we’re built heavily around self-protection so if a member gets attack everyone is expected to contribute in some way. Outside of war there are also agreements and arrangements available for various trade deals and joint projects between nations. I don’t expect you to make a decision right this moment so, think about and if you want to join feel free to contact the TDA offices at Gorganos Prime.” Crove slide over a data drive that contained the location of the Gorganos system as well as the means to contact the TDA government.
“That was all I had for today and I thank you for your time Admiral."
Yousef nodded his farewell to Crove and began the walk back to the gunship. The parting words had certainly given him something to mull over on the trip back at least, though he was already leaning towards acceptance.
"Can't hurt having some friends in a new universe" He said to no one in particular, his guards not seeming to notice he spoke.
By the time the ship was docked, he'd made up his mind. He would push the offer through the chain of command with his personal recommendation, and he was sure that within the week it would have officially accepted.
“So, Captain what do we have today?” Crove said with a hint of enthusiasm
