Emperor Malek Torka of the Raska Empire looked out the window of his new room in the vacation Palace. It was in the mountains, right next to a beautiful valley filled with Velia flowers and a sizable lake. Forget private islands, this was paradise for the Raska.
“Enjoying the view?” the Emperor heard behind him.
He didn’t even need to look behind him to know who it was. “Vakras,” he simply said. Vakras Ustudar was of House Rassakar, and so he had a huge frame packed to the brim with muscle. His scales were dark crimson, though he had a tan underbelly that showed a bit on his neck. He had a set of massive horns on his head, clearly proud of them. His eyes were gold colored, and had a fire in them that likely would never extinguish. “Oh right, Emperor Vakras,” Malek said as he turned and bowed before him.
“Alright, that’s enough. I’m still getting used to the title, and you of all people should not be bowing to me. Despite what the House says, you have led our people to prosperity,” Vakras said.
“But it is clear I can’t lead them now. I’m a coward.”
“Nonsense. You had the best interests of the Empire in mind. You were brave enough to face the criticism, and it’s not like you didn’t try.”
“I know, but I still feel I’ve failed the Empire. Which is why you’re the Emperor now,” Malek said.
Vakras figured there was no use trying to cheer him up right now. But, there was the future to consider. “So, what will you do now?” he asked Malek.
Malek thought for a bit before sighing and saying, “I don’t know. This Palace is amazing, but I have to somehow enjoy it alone. You get to enjoy it with your wife and children.”
“Why not find yourself a new wife. You’re not too old for that yet.”
“Yes. And I bet every woman in the Empire will want to marry the former Emperor.”
“You make it sound like that’s a bad thing,” Vakras said.
“It is,” Malek stated, “And I’m certain you have better things to do than talk to a relic like me. And… I’d like the time alone.”
Getting the message, Vakras left and closed the doors behind him. He prided himself on being more reasonable than his brethren of House Rassakar. Still, he did not like leaving him alone at a time like this.
“I need to find something for him to do,” Emperor Vakras said to himself, “But what. He never had that much military experience, so anything military is out. He’s too old to go into the Legion. And his status means he can’t go into a civilian career.” The guards nearby had worked with Vakras before. They knew he often talked to himself out loud. “I got it, I could have him as an adviser. It might put the Ne’Ala still in the Empire at ease. They have not responded well to my coronation. Yeah, let’s do that.”
Just as he turned around to go back in and suggest that, a shot rang out, coming from that very room. Then came the sound of a body crumpling to the ground. Vakras froze for a moment before slowly pushing the door open. What he saw confirmed his worst fears. Malek had a hole right on the side of his head, the blaster used by his side.
Guards rushed over, only to witness the grisly sight themselves. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity of silence, Emperor Vakras sighed and said, “Thus passes Emperor Malek Torka. You will be missed.” He then turned to his guards and ordered them to remove the body, and ensure that preparations are made for its trip to the Tomb of the Emperors.
He soon left for his chambers. Only once he was there did he allow any tears to fall from his eyes. Malek could’ve still done so much for the Empire, he just couldn’t see that. Now it was too late.
Once Vakras composed himself, he got on his communicator and contacted his Admirals. He ordered for scouts to go explore the galaxy and find new civilizations. It was time they knew who exactly was in this galaxy. Then, it was only a question of who to make friends with and who to conquer.
