Right on the edge of the Golden Expanse, around the border between the Unmar Expanse and Invilis Corridor, the cluster of five systems that the System had recently colonized sat. Within each was still a flurry of activity as the various construction units worked, never resting, to construct the infrastructure required to support the intelligences that would be housed there and to maintain and produce the new mechanical bodies for each unit. It was a long process, but the System never slept, never ate, and so the work continued at an impressive rate. Meanwhile, in orbit, the majority of their naval fleet sat, on standby to swiftly eliminate any intruders, keeping their sensors at the ready.
A short distance away in the scheme of things, and a long distance away from the point of view of any normal being, a shift was occuring within the Golden Expanse. The twisting chaos of space-time that was the hallmark of the galactic core was known to sometimes expand and then contract, creating areas tha seemed safe, only to expand and swallow them up again. This time was no different, and so the instability came, zooming towards the five systems at FTL velocities, without warning or ceremony.
As the wave of destruction approached, various sensors began to pick it up, the System forces at somewhat of a disadvantage especially since they were already so close and having not established their permanant observatories yet. Emergency alerts began to be sounded at the lightning speed that the System were known for, but it was too late. The wave washed over the systems like a nuclear blast washing over a town, smashing the comparitively fragile infrastructure and fleets into atoms, as temporal anomalies erased some from existence. Two of the five systems were erased altogether, while another was made barren apart from the star. And then just as fast as the expansion had occured, it receeded, leaving nothing remaining to tell that anyone had ever been there.
