Ancerious North West: Volarian Corridor
While the main focus of the war was located in the Galactic core in the east and in the north the north west and western reaches of the galaxy remained largely untouched, free of conflict and relatively unmolested. However despite the majority thinking such, it was not the case.
The Interstellar Covenanted States had been one of the first to discover the Ancerious galaxy and settle down entering around 9 years after the Union. ICS had quickly settled down establishing large colonies and their capital in the Hope system and after contact and diplomacy with the Union had assisted in exploration and mapping of the galaxy, in that regard it was by ICS help that the early maps and star charts of the galaxy came into being. However while they had been relatively peaceful and diplomatic they too had been caught up in the conflict of the 1st Ancerious war, fighting alongside the allies and eventually joining the AGA and the CAE in their wish to aid and support their allies in both power blocs. However the majority of ICS history was always pock marked with conflict, the perpetrators being the Empire of Atlantis, the nemesis of ICS and another one of the first empires to discover Ancerious, both empires having been at war well before the galaxy was discovered.
The Empire of Atlantis was almost a mirror image of the ICS, it was an autocratic dictatorship rather than a bastion of democracy and freedom. Ruled over by its old and malevolent Emperor Chronulus who took great joy in all kinds of exotic experimentation on his own people Atlantis had come to Ancerious trailing the ICS, looking for resources and artefacts to uncover. They soon gained a reputation as aggressive slavers and frequently raided multiple factions over the years, while they have technically been at war with the allied nations for all this time they were never deemed a big threat their technology had always been lacking and with their actions restricted to raiding and the occasional attack on the ICS the only major response from the allies was to defend ICS from the Atlantean invasion of Liberty in AME050 during the 1st Ancerious war. With Atlantis contained the allies had no idea of the cogs in motion set about by the APP.
Little did the allies know that Atlantis had actually been one of the founding members of the APP, having attended the APP founding conference and pledged their allegiance to join Atlantis had then held covert talks with Empress Inara. While the war was only months away at this point Atlantis secured contracts from Triarch to upgrade their outdated technology and fleet and alongside new Capitol instructors helped to train their forces to far more acceptable levels. Atlantis sat out most of the beginning of the war, only really making raiding runs on allied convoys, something which had always been done and so did not turn any heads, however by the time leading up to the Battle of Rubikon Atlantis was now fully capable, the APP, long wanting a proper foothold in the western reaches of the galaxy to use as a base and to strike out finally had their chance.
When Atlantis mobilised their forces and prepared for their invasion of the ICS, aiming to destroy and annex it as was their wish after these long centuries the ICS had not been idle. Intelligence reports soon indicated the impending attack and the ICS mobilised their forces, despite being in Ancerious for well over 58 years they had only colonised 6 solar systems however all of which were inhabited with bustling metropolises, and near every world moon and asteroid was populated in some form or fashion, the small number of systems meant better defense but also meant that most of the nations resources had not gone into the military.
Never the less the ICS called for aid, sharing their intelligence with the AGA and CAE the possibility of an all out attack was corroborated by Union and Metropolitan intelligence (Not yet having fallen to the Unnamed, during these events Metropolis was still being infiltrated the fall would come later) and the allies mustered what forces they could. The Union could only help logistically with its forces tied up on many fronts and still staging for Rubikon and the Crucible strike it could send no ships, however Metropolis sent a small force of nearly 320 vessels to defend their age old ally and Tenebrae also sent a small strike force of near 110 ships. Last to help was the Carnaithians who could only spare around 80 old classes of vessels from their reserve fleets, together with around 723 ICS vessels of their own fleets (tiny compared to most major nations in the war) prepared to defend the ICS home.
Long range sensor systems picked up however the Atlantis staging ground, a large fleet had been detected in the Charon system, in the frequently fought over neutral space between Atlantis and ICS, citing that the best defence is a good offense the ICS general Kain Yalse ordered a strike force of nearly 150 ICS vessels to intercept the Atlantis invasion force, while according to sensor scans nearly being outnumbered two to one the knowledge of Atlantis forces indicated that their dilapidated and technologically inferior ships coupled with poor trained would make it an easy victory. Not convinced the allies sent several small bands of ships alongside the ICS attack to the Charon system, the Atlantis fleet of nearly 480 vessels was intercepted around the High gravity world of Pelum in what would become known as the ‘Slaughter of Charon’. The battle was a complete disaster, the Atlantis ships still outnumbered the allied forces near 2 to 1 and not only that but their technology and vessels had been considerably upgraded, and their training and tactics on par with any major nation in the war, losing all but 13 vessels of the various fleets the allies retreated inflicting only minimal damage to the Atlantis force. It was now clear to the allied forces that the APP had been backing Atlantis all along.
The allies barely had time to organise a proper defence when the Atlantis invasion force now backed up by reinforcements invaded the ICS main agricultural system of Paranus. The allies chose to sacrifice the outermost worlds, unable to evacuate them in time and still outnumbered by Atlantis (the fleets had been spread out between the 6 systems) they chose to stay under the cover of the system defence platforms. The two outermost worlds were burned, orbitally bombarded into ashes by the guns of the Atlantis fleet without mercy before they ploughed straight onto the inner system. The fighting was intense, the battle of Paranus lasted several days and despite heavy casualties on both sides neither side could break each other, Atlantis withdrew back to the outer planets while allied reinforcements from other systems poured in system to help sure up the defences. However Atlantis wasn’t finished, with a huge FTL signature detected a second Atlantis fleet jumped in system this time with a super weapon. A giant part Triarch constructed super dreadnought named ‘Harbinger’ armed with a Proton cannon of such size to be able to crack planets the renewed battle quickly turned to a loss for the allies, choosing to withdraw from Paranus and make a stand in the Salm system the Atlantis super weapon merely wiped Paranus clean.
And the Atlantis fleet then came for the Salm system.
