The TDASV Forward into destiny emerged gracefully from its wormhole on the outskirts of the system where the Divine Davian Empire made an unsuccessful first contact attempt with another space faring nation. Of course upon hearing the news the TDA was quick to mobilise a diplomatic effort to mend relations and stop the outbreak of a conflict. Since when leaving the sovereign territory of this nation they were threatened as such.
Captain Alyssa Robertson was Commanding the Forward Into Destiny she looked over at the assigned official for her ship one Rex Doss. Doss was a quiet man he didn't have much to say at anytime and he would quickly change the subject if he was pestered about his cybernetic arm. The ship halted outside the system and began active scans to attract the attention of this nation.
"You sure about this plan Rex, feels like it's taking unnecessary risks you feel me." Robertson said sarcastically to Doss
"It'll work we just need time and don't forget the alert fleet is on call and listening to us if we stop the all clear signal they'll be here in an instant to save us. For now we wait however." Doss refuted
Admiral Kavaar had not been idle in the time since the ‘visit’ of the Davians. She’d held three meetings with the admiralty, killed one of the Admirals and assumed his role, and spoken with Lord Arkus himself. She was content in the fact her efforts had paid off. A second starbase, planned for Kalt had arrived the day before and now held station in system. The construction of defense platforms here had been given highest priority and they now had twenty four fully operational and another dozen under construction. Not only that but a further 25 vessels from Kalt and a another 50 from the home fleet had been placed under her temporary command taking the systems total defenders to 150 FTL capable warships and in addition to this she’d managed to acquire 50 monitors for the systems defence. In all she was quite pleased with the state her command was in, as well as her new rank. Patrols came and went in much greater frequency, the defenders below strength for now more than a handful of hours at a time.
This when she had been informed of energy signatures akin to scans she had immediately cut short her meal and moved to the bridge. “Are they the Davian cowards?” she questioned. “Unknown admiral, though the signatures seem different.” the reply came. “All ships and stations, red alert. Prepare for combat but do not fire until I give the order.” she ordered. “Open a hail, all bands. Amplify it through the stations, make sure it carries.” she continued and the comms operator did so. “Unknown vessels, cease your scans and identify yourselves immediately. I will ask only once.” she spoke across the void.
"Well that rather quick wasn't it. Maybe we were expected. Well now it's your time to step into the spotlight Rex." Robertson joked with Doss. She then waved at the her officers and the active scans were ceased.
"Greetings this is Rex Doss official representative of the Three Domains Alliance. We come requesting an audience to open up diplomatic talks between our nations." Doss said with a stern tone. He wasn't one to coat his words in honey.
She took note of the one speaking’s name as well as the name of this ‘Three Domains Alliance’.
They weren’t one to waste time with unnecessary pleasantries and she appreciated that.
“Rex Doss of the Three Domains Alliance. I am Admiral Kavaar of the Vaanitas Supremacy. You request diplomatic talks almost immediately, a notion i find strange. You are the second nation to visit our system in recent times, and you also arrive to a system much reinforced and on high alert. You seem of stronger stock than the last if your communications so far are anything to go by.” she spoke in reply. The fleet remained alert and ready.
Doss took notes of everything in the last transmission, from tone of voice to word choice. He was aiming to nail down some of the details of how these people acted and spoke. From what he observed so far was that the Davian report was accurate. The Vaanitas Supremacy took pride in a Darwinist philosophy where only the strong would survive.
"Robertson I'm going to invite them on board I want not only the honour guard but I want that hanger filled from one side to the other with marines in full combat power armour and weapons. If we want a peaceful negotiations with these people we'll need to flex our strength a bit to do it." He seemed too focused on the job at hand to care about how he was addressing everyone. Robertson merely nodded and obeyed his request. Doss picked his headset back up to address the VS admiral.
"Admiral Kavaar On behalf of the Three Domains Alliance government I formally invite to come aboard our ship to open negotiations between our nations." The sternness in his voice was apparent when he spoke.
Kavaar took pause at this. The system was essentially on a war footing, the Admiral boarding a potential enemy ships was reckless in the extreme. Whilst she had been impressed by them thus far, it seemed a tactical blunder to leave the fleet in the hands of her underlings.
“Under other circumstances I would not hesitate to do so.” She began, her words calculated but cautious. “However given this system's current state of alert i’m sure you can agree that an Admiral leaving her post to board a foreign vessel, with who knows what waiting aboard, would be rather foolish of me.” she concluded and paused for thought. Had the system not been at full readiness she likely would have tested the strength in their voice with combat. However the Vaanitas presence in this new place was not quite so powerful yet that she would risk an entire flank to better understand this TDA.
Doss looked over to Robertson and shook his head.
"These weren't the barbaric supremacist we were told about. Keep that signaller on stand by I'm going to try something a little reckless and see how they react." His tone unchanging from its sternness. He then put his Comms headset back on.
"Admiral, you mean to tell me you won't come and open talks with new nation because you're afraid of leaving your post. I mean we are only one ship surely if something were going to happen to you although it won't I'm positive that you have enough firepower to destroy us utterly." He forced his point across with his bluntness.
"Doss what the hell are you doing. Are you trying to start a war. You'll be court martialed if we get attacked and survive this." Robertson snapped at Doss.
"Let me do my job here Robertson and you do yours it's risk versus reward and at the moment we have a lot of both so spare me your threats." Doss replied
She chuckled slightly. “Whilst I applaud the attempt to goad me, I’m afraid I won’t bite, though I expect it would have worked on some of the other Admirals. However you have proven to be most interesting, much more so than those who came before.” she spoke and thought for a moment.
“In response I will extend my own invitation. Rex Doss of the Three Domains Alliance, I invite you to come aboard my flagship the redoubt to talk further.” she spoke formally. “An acceptable compromise I think”.
"Admiral I accept your offer and we'll be over in a bit". Doss then turned to Robertson as he took off his Comms headset.
"I need a ship and as many marines will fit in it. If you lose contact with us for any reason signal the fleet." Doss ordered Robertson as he left the CIC.
He walked down to the hanger where his ship and two squads of marines were waiting. He waved at the platoon leader and they all boarded. The flight over to the VS flagship was quiet, even the marines remained silent as even they heard of the gruff reputation of Doss or as the troops called him: The old man of the navy, due to his age.
Kavaar affixed her ceremonial cloak around her shoulders and strode down to the primary hangar bay. The visitors were directed to the colossal bay, everything but an area large enough for them to land in was filled with Vaanitas marines, the front row her honour guard in their darker crimson armour, hardlight glaives held to attention. A long crimson red carpet led up to the landing space and Kavaar strode down it, awaiting the arrival of the TDA.
The ship landed inside of the colossal hanger. The ramp was dropped and the two squads of marines marched out. One squad stood at attention either side of the ramp. Doss walked down shortly after they did, He was different from the other diplomats who wore business suits he preferred to wear his dress blues from his navy days. He was well decorated and the jingle of medals could be heard with every foot step he took. He walked over to the prominent figure standing out the front of the troops in the hangar.
"Greetings I'm Rex Doss, official representative of the Three Domains Alliance here to conduct initial diplomatic relations."
The marines and honour guard snapped to attention, thousands of boots hitting metal echoing out through the hangar. From behind their visors some of the honour guard looked down at the marines.
Kavaar stepped forwards, looking down at the human before her with her piercing crimson gaze. She stood 6’9” and had her long black hair tied back into a neat pony tail. Her dark grey skin was covered in symmetrical warrior tattoos, her body clad in ceremonial black and crimson armour, a cape of the same colour affixed to the shoulders of the armour.
“Welcome aboard the Redoubt Rex Doss. I am Admiral Miria Kavaar of the Vaanitas Supremacy as you already know.” she spoke, inclining her head slightly. As she introduced herself the marines in the hangar saluted and the honour guard banged the base of their glaves against the floor, metal on metal clanging loudly.
"An impressive parade you've staged here if I say so myself. So shall we begin our talks." He looked up steely eyed at Kavaar as he spoke.
“I’m glad you appreciate it.” she spoke with cold smirk. “Yes, if you’ll follow me.” she spoke, turning and walking along the laid out carpet towards the hangar doors. Two honour guard walked just in front of her and two waited to bring up the rear of the procession.
Doss followed Kavaar alone he didn’t see the need to bring any of the marines along with him they would only get in the way he thought to himself. Looking around it was apparent that these people took a lot of pride in their military and while the Davian report was true to an extent it seems they only gleamed the surface of these peoples culture. Doss thought to himself that the Vaanatis must demand strength of anyone they meet as a means of finding valuable opponents to fight with or perhaps it was the opposite they only held such meetings like this with people they thought had great strength and destroy others like they said they would do to the Davians. He was curious to know which one it could be or if he was just wrong in is deductions.
Kavaar entered one of the elevators and each of the honour guard stood in a corner. The lift sped through the ship and the doors opened, Kavaar exiting with two guards, the other two flanking Doss.
They exited into a medium sized room with a table and two chairs at it’s centre. As they entered the walls flickered and became a view of the space outside, the Vaanitas defences and fighter squadrons that were circling visible on them, as well as the vastness of space itself. Kavaar took her place one of the large seats, designed for her kind, and lifted the crystal decanter in the middle that was filled with some kind of golden liquid which she poured two glasses off and slid the second towards the empty seat.
“Please join me” she spoke and gestured to it as she sipped her own drink.
Doss sat down and took a sip of the drink she poured. Terrible stuff but he kept a face to conceal his feelings about it. He took a moment to look around at the walls of the room to observe the defences and fighter squadrons. An impressive system defence he thought to himself. He finished off his drink and placed it on the table.
“Now my visit here today isn’t one of coincidence. We came looking to talk to you directly after you ran into some friends of ours. So we were hoping to bridge the gap so to speak. The nation I speak of is the Divine Davian Empire respectfully.” He kept his gruff tone even as spoke of peace.
She paused and placed her drink on the table. “I has expected something similar.” she spoke, holding no particular tone. “It seemed unlikely that two nations with no relation would stumble on the same system in such a short space of time.” she continued.
“You call them friends. That is...unfortunate. My opinion of them is they are spineless cowards, hardly even worthy of our time, let alone our ammunition.” Kavaar said, taking another sip of her drink.
“Now look, think what you will of the Davians at the end of the day we have agreements that need to be honoured. So to start with I would put forward a Non-Aggression Pact that applies not only to us but the rest of our band of merry men known as the Western Regional League.” He pulled out a small device from his pocket he activated it and slid it across the table, on it displayed the standard NAP used by the TDA.
She looked at this 'Non aggression pact’, an utterly foreign concept to the Vaanitas. The only thing even resembling the things she read was the agreement with the Arteran Federation.
“This talk of ‘non aggression’ especially towards the Davian filth who dishonour us and themselves is not something I or my nation will accept.” she spoke, pushing the device back. “Only you do we deem worthy of respect from your actions until now, and we know nothing of the other members of your league.”
“Listen darlin, it’s either this the easy way; Which is you sign this document right here and we go our separate ways no need to talk or interact with each other anymore then we need to or we can do it the hard way;: which is every member of the WRL coming down on you if and when you decide to attack the Davians. So the choice now is yours to make and I recommend you choose wisely.”
Doss knew he just threatened a nation of people with a war, but they seemed not easy to provoke. So he had his hopes up he still might walk out of the office alive. Even if they did anything to him to him the fleet would be here in a moment’s notice.
Kavaar paused once more. It had been a long time since someone had talked to her in such a manner. She did not understand this ‘darlin’ but assumed it referred to her. This human certainly intrigued her. He spoke with confidence she was not used to in his kind, had he been a Vaan she may have considered him as a potential suitor. But her mind was wandering and she needed to focus.
“I will be clear with you. I will not be signing this document. This document is the only thing in our interaction that has tarnished my opinion of you. At the moment we have no knowledge as to the location of the Davian’s.” she spoke, looking him directly in the eye, her tone serious.
“I tell you this due to the respect you have earned Rex Doss. Should the Davians come anywhere near our space again, we will destroy them. Should you attempt to defend them, we will fire upon you also. For now we have ourselves a stalemate it would seem. I will allow you to leave this ship and leave our system, but know this. Should you return advocating for the Davian’s again I will not hesitate in firing upon you. Do I make myself clear?” she finished.
“Very well and any hostile actions against us or our allies will result in the destruction of your nation. Good day.”
Doss walked out of the office and was escorted back to his ship. He signalled the marines to get back on board and the left for the Forward into Destiny. Once he arrived he stormed his way into the CIC and got on the comms to report what happened. Waiting for when he was finished Robertson walked up to him with her typical grin.
“So I take they don’t want to be friends then. Should I have the alert fleet jump in?” She asked curiously
“No, bring us about and take us home. We’re done here”
