Recovered logs, and excepts have been retrieved from ensign Ishi Mura’s Personal affects. Incident has been dubbed ‘The dead of space’ .It is uncertain who initially came upon this moniker, but it has unfortunately stuck.
It should be noted that only the latter half of the recording is present at the current time, as the initial portions were so heavily corrupted that it was impossible to retrieve anything other than static. It is currently theorized that magnetic and radiation bursts generated from the unknown life forms encountered. According to crewmen present at the time, a routine mining operation was interrupted by an unknown space-born fauna. Samples retrieved subsequently escaped containment, and attacked the miners before being dealt with. Safety Protocols are currently undergoing considered revisions following this event.
The following excerpt is what information of the incident could be retrieved.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The feeder organism had now nearly completely receded from view. Using what perceptory organs it possessed it attempted to hide from view while not avoiding contact with the armed guards. Bare metal it had been feeding on was heavily rusted and worn away as though it had seen decades of mismanagement. Pulps of flesh squeezes into containment unit's, knowing that they would be able to simply break back out of containment.
The lab animals kept in thus section of ship had also disappeared in their entirety. No blood fur or feathers remained of the animals, as though they had never been there in the first place
"Lady's name"
"I've seen enough horror movies to know where this is going"
As the soldiers sweep forward through the room they scan the area with shaking weapons held in unstable hands, trepidation visible in each mans movements, soon their slow pace brings them to the rack row that the original sample was held in, the soldiers stop several taking a knee as they appraise the situation in the decaying room.
The solider died, not with dignity, not with pride, but screaming, the tendrils ripped through the air impacting the soldiers armor, ceramic plates cracked and fibers tore as the fleshy weapons burst free of the man, the silver spray of nanites twinkling through the cones of light the other soldiers projected with their flash lights, a cry of alarm and a few panicked shouts signaled the beginning of the panicked teams counter attack, rail rifles hurled depleted uranium rods with a staccato thump as the room flashed with the thermal light of the weapons firing systems.
The miners scramble away from the thing screeching in alarm as the racks collapse.
"What the fuck!"
Hauling himself to his feet the soldier wielding the tide thrower aims at the seething mass and depresses the trigger hurling a spray of self-replicating nanites at the monstrosity.
"Die! Die! Die!"
Moments later the room once again flashes bright as the thumping impacts of the other three soldiers rail rifles echo through the space.
The form struggled against the tide of nantes, the machines and the flesh consuming each other and growing and expanding at an exponential rate. The moment of hesitation between the tide thrower and the rail rifles was all that was needed for the creature to escape... sort of.
While being consumed, the entity propelled and ejected flesh on all directions with astonishing velocity. Though many were instantly consumed by any nanites they had trailed, a small few managed to escape, though their capacity to do anything was largely inhibited by their small size, and lack of biological material to use.
The form itself after several seconds of sustained fire collapsed onto the ground, seizing rapidly, as it was becoming consumed. Stored thermal energy was being expelled faster than it could.be absorbed, and so as the form became more and more distorted , steam rose from its surface, and the ambient temperature began to normalize.
Several other racks collapsed due to the new stimulus, as well their consumption. They revealed a similar story, though it was mostly fleshy pulps that did not react towards the annointed crew
The thrower wielding soldier turns on the spot and sprays the newly reveals masses of flesh as the the other soldiers pivot to bring their weapons to bare.
THUMP THUMP THUMP
"Fuck fuck"
"Kill it kill it"
"Oh shit oh shit"
Those pulps of flesh capable of movement retreated from the hostile fire, while the thick sludge clinging desperately to every surface was melted away with the nanites. This process was taking far longer than it should have, the flesh of the Dirge broke down many of the nanites into their basic atomic matter before they could do any harm, though under the constant assault it was impossible to incorporate the new matter.
Several of the fleshy pulps shit thin crimson tendrils towards the miners, though they did not have the significant velocity of the first.
Ceramics crack and bend under the ministrations of the Fleshy appendages, several piercing deep regardless of the reduced velocity, however they were slowed enough that the miners yet lived the biological weapons not displacing enough nanites to break their forms.
Sec officer Morris shouts as he back pedals in panic, his feet catch deformed metal and he falls unceremoniously onto his rear, the gestalts legs pump against the floor as he try's desperately to put space between himself and the horrors before him.
"HOW ARE THERE SO FUCKING MANY!"
The tide thrower continues to hiss and spit as the grey dusty clouds of self-replicating nanites begin to find their own targets abandoning already slain clumps in favor of the others.
As the nanites compiled, eating the bio matter in the air, and those now coating the surfaces of the containment unit, the air began clearing. And the sky began to fall. The chunks of flesh coating the ceiling had largely been ignored, though as the nanites began consuming and attacking the remaining piles of flesh it lost cohesion. And thusly a rain of flesh poured onto the poor miners. Still it attempted to fulfill it's primary purpose of consumption.
The creatures originally assailing the miners had been reduced to smoldering clumps, the heat they had absorbed now radiating into the environment.
Men scream in terror and drop their weapons, arm scrabbling desperately at the offending matter as they struggle to remove the bioweapons now consuming them alive, one man drops to the floor screeching the whole way as he is overwhelmed, the remaining soldiers begin trying to eat the bio matter back, self-replicating machines meeting bio acid in microscopic battles of assembly and disassembly.
After less than a minute the conflict was over. The remaining pieces if flesh clung tightly to whatever surface they were anchored to, and did not budge. The nanites in the room had nearly cleared away the thick fog of particular bio matter, revealing the sorry state if the room, as well the miners that had succumbed to the attack.
Dragging themselves from the floor the remains of the security team look about surveying the sorry state of the room around them.
"fuck me..."
wandering about the soldiers begin to clean the room down, nanites passing over surfaces and repairing damage, after a few minutes it is as if nothing had ever happened.
Aboard the bridge ensign Ishi Mura grins at the captain.
"that was a whole lot of nothing"
the captain grunts and replys
"doesn't matter, its over now so everyone get back to work"
