Like some other nations, the Grand Araxium Empire relies heavily on combat ships for the deployment of fighters, bombers and ground forces. As such, the GAE has developed a doctrine that revolves around warships with the ability to land some size of ground forces. The Araxian Unification war, or reunification war as it is sometimes referred to as, featured numerous large ship to ship battles often beyond the range of the human eye. In some battles the largest warships were almost always unharmed due to the difficulty in hitting a target of its size beyond normal visible range. The largest of these ships, the Ultimate Fast Battleship category are typically the core of every fleet; being able to carry a large amount of ground forces, fighters and bombers. Found in almost every battlefield, they represent the strength of the Araxian Kriegsmarine.
Ultimate Fast Battleships
As their name would suggest, they are simply larger versions of fast battleships. They used to be typically associated with having little armor, large amounts of firepower and were normally fast. However, it is difficult to move 90 to 100 kilometers of warship through space and as such they are most often described as oversized battleships. Three classes exist; the Brunhildr class, the Arabel class and the Auryon class. Each three possess different traits that make them suitable for various commanders and all three were named after the most powerful figures in the Araxium Empire.
The Brunhildr class is the most heavily armored of the three and has the most reduced fighter and bomber capacity (only 3000). While it is heavily armored it is also armed with one of the most powerful weapons and it is not uncommon to see warships of this class fitted with experimental weapons. Named after Erika Brunhildr, a Generalfeldmarschall in the Araxian Reichswehr, the ship class is considerably harder to accelerate in space but is about the same in performance when travelling to distant stars as the others when using faster than light methods.
Named after the 1st Empress of the Araxium Empire, Arabel Ignatius Von Raxia, this ship class is well known amongst admirals as being the most balanced in capabilities. Armored just well enough to sustain long range battle and armed well enough to hit above its size, it also has the most balanced amount of fighters and bombers (around 4500). One of the most well known features of this ship class is its usage of anti-capital ship torpedoes, the same kinds found on the Atago class heavy cruisers. These torpedoes are launched out the hull from silos that are angled to fire forwards, and are mainly effective at long range.
The last of the UFBs to be designed, the Auryon class is named after the 2nd Empress of the Araxium Empire, Auryon Denetrius Von Raxia. While the GAE do have dedicated carriers, the Auryon class are essentially oversized and heavily armed carriers. Compared to the other UFB classes, this class was the least well armored but boasted shields strong enough to withstand most bomber attacks. Its anti-bomber and CIWS are rated higher than the Arabel class and could even shred destroyers that came too close. This class also had the largest carrying capacity for fighters and bombers (around 6000) but lacked some ground forces carrying capacity as a result.
Large Battlecruiser
Commonly known as cheaper versions of Ultimate Fast Battleships, Large Battlecruisers or Fast Battlecruisers were what the Terran Federation used to call flagship class warships. While smaller and less heavily armored and armed than the Ultimate Fast Battleships, they were easier to build and were more manageable to use in a three dimensional war in space as the ship was lighter and could therefore change its orientation quickly. Only two classes exist in this ship category for the Araxians.
The first is the Prinz Eugen class. Favored by most fleet commanders for its similar ability to the Arabel class UFB, having great firepower and balanced armor and mobility. Compared to the Arabel class, it was smaller and had greater acceleration and was crewed by fewer personel due to the automation of most of the ship systems. It is currently the only ship class to have an AI with a physical body onboard.
The second is the Von Degurechaff class. Known to be well armored this kind of ship is rare to see on the front line. Adler Mechanical Yards, the main shipbuilder, no longer produces these ships for front line standards and as such are a common sight defending worlds. Slower than even the Ultimate Fast Battleships, they are incredibly difficult to move from one position to the next. They are in effect interplanetary defense platforms.
Super Cruiser
During the Axonn - Soviet war, the super cruiser was the largest ship available to the Royal Axonn Navy and was used as flagships. However there were only a few of them built at the time and were thus extremely rare. They did not boast great armor or firepower and were quite disappointing when it came to landing troops on the ground.
