Lir, Muspell system.
A shattered dream, but not a failed one. That was one way of calling the Babylon Free Trade Zone. The Furrelian Union certainly did not lose interest in it, as it was one of the few systems where the Union could freely trade, without the threat of trade then being intercepted. This was one of the reasons why Muspell, and specifically Lir, remained a hotspot of Furrelian activity. The previous Systemal Governor, and a large part of his staff, were moved to another colony by orders of the council of fifty-one. As his replacement, a man named Manutesi Kalena was selected to govern the system. Manutesi certainly was an experienced governor and diplomat, having been in charge of the Estel system during the D’Karian war back in the milky way galaxy. In the office where three months earlier the previous governor sat, Kalena read through the news. Much like the news on other planets, it was state-owned. But on Lir it was modified in such a way to make it seem as if it was not written by the state. Kalena knew the contents of the newspaper, he had already been briefed on them a day earlier. Written in bold Sylenti letters, and repeated in Galactic common letters below it, was written a simple text; ‘War declared on Gauss Dominion, Invasion of Luasu underway!’. Kalena quickly looked through the article, before going back to his actual work. The defences of Muspell were completely revamped a few months ago, outdated defensive platforms, which were built when the fate of the planetary system was still unknown, were retrofitted and moved towards the outer debris ring, where they would function as interdiction platforms when needed. More modern platforms took their old spots. The previous garrison fleet was called back to sallag, as with many other ships.
As a replacement, a cruiser wing, consisting of seven ships and dozens of smaller craft, were stationed in the system. Still, it would not be enough to defend the entire system, and he understood that. Even with Lithorian help, it would be unlikely that they could keep everything secure. Kalena seemed lost in his own thoughts but got quickly ripped out of it when a ping arrived on his computer. A message from the Furrelian Government arrived, and when he opened it, it seemed as if his day-dream came true. “Regarding relations in the Babylon FTZ.” The Furrelian Government in Ancerious has expressed concerns about the possibility that the Gauss Dominion will attack and seize Furrelian holdings in the Babylon Free Trade Zone. The current garrisoning force in the Muspell system is severely under forced, and the possibility of the garrison being reinforced any time soon has been put down as unlikely. Governor Kalena has been ordered to discuss a deal with the Lithorian hive about the defence of the system, and further relations between the two nations. Order signed and authorised by Tyual Jessaio, Gryan overseer of the Ancerious Colonial programme.” Kalena could not believe his eyes, he read the message for a second time, and when he verified that it was actually true, he called the communications centre. A message was sent to the closest Lithorian bioship, requesting that a diplomat would make their way towards the central station of the system. Kalena himself did so too, making his way towards the busy spaceport of Lir, and taking a shuttle towards the central space station. Diplomacy had started taking shape in Muspell.
The babylon free trade zone was nothing short of heaven for the lithorian collective. While its complete lack of moons was somewhat of an annoyance, the fact that it hosted not one,but two easilly colonizable ocean planets more than made up for it. To make matters even better, goods and resource came in and out from all sorts of nations, bringing profit to the various colonies and their administrators. Of course due to its location on the galactic plane, the system's true gold was none other than ancerium bought from miners, which the collective was always hungry for. Aknak, the captain of a lithorian frigate, was currently lazing around while on one of his monthly patrol circuits. Given there was no actual fighting to do here besides occasional smugglers and other outlaws, most of his time was spent endlessly checking and double checking his ship's state of being and its complement of troops. Sometimes however,he would search through status updates of the various colonies in the system and even follow ancerious news information. He was looking through one such newsfeed when a notification sound rang in his ears, quickly causing the screen to shift and display the furrelian message "Ah,I suppose it was only a matter of time" he said as he listened to the contents, activating another screen to contact his nearest superior The display flashed for a moment before displaying Qhoz'uls frame, who had recently "acquired" a city on a dwarf planet within the system's debris disk from another high ranking lithorian Ah,it is a pleasure to see you Aknak. What news do you bring? he asked, staring at his screen intently Aknak did not talk right away, instead playing the message for his fellow alien first "Permission to attend this meeting" he said plainly
Straight to the point I see,how thoughtful. You may go,but you and I will have to establish a constant link, just to make sure you make no mistakes Aknak nodded, feeling his mind become intertwined with Qhoz'uls before he turned off the screens The captain would then proceed to take a shuttle towards the furrelian station, boarding it and stepping out into its bowels. The creature before the furrelians would be about 2 and a half meters tall and covered in an almost metallic exoskeleton. Aknak stood on two digitigrade legs and had a large insectile abdomen. The lithorian also had four tentacular arms which ended in four grasping claws, each long enough to drag along on the floor had they not been crossed behind his back. Speaking of his back,it hosted four membranous wings currently folded over one another. The creature's head on the other hand only had two features,a mouth full of fangs and four eyes atop short, thick stalks that could move independently

The Furrelian space station in orbit of Lir had a lower than average gravity, in order to accommodate its Furrelian inhabitants. While the station followed much of the Furrelian design choices, it, like many other things in Lir, was modified to not be too similar to the actual Furrelian products. This station was no different. Its original narrow corridors were limited to the lower decks, where only engineers would conduct maintenance, and where traders could store their goods. Instead, on the higher decks, the hallways were replaced with wide and open halls, which ended up on the open promenade of the station. Here, there were stores owned by both Furrelians and unaligned. An elevator could take those with authorisation up to towards the diplomatic centre of the station, where trade deals could be agreed on. A special room was built a while ago for diplomatic contacts with the other colonial nations which worked with the Babylon Free Trade Zone, but as most nations withdrew, it turned into a room for diplomatic contacts between the Furrelians and Lithorians. Aknak’s frigate would be able to dock directly at the promenade’s docking ring, where he would be welcomed by Kalena himself. The Furrelian was eager to shake hands with his Lithorian counterpart but decided against it once he noticed the razor-sharp claws the Lithorian had. “Welcome aboard the Lir orbital station, my Lithorian friend. If you could please follow me upstairs, we can hold the talks there.” Kalena said.
The Diplomatic room that the Furrelians had constructed was in a similar fashion to most Furrelian briefing rooms, yet was more spacious, and instead of the metal table, floor and walls, they were replaced with warmer objects. The wooden table had a deep brown colour and had multiple holographic projectors installed into it. On the wall, a large screen showed maps of both Furrelian and Lithorian space, while the other wall had a large tinted window to the outside, showing the system in all its glory. A duo of Furrelian and Lithorian banners were placed near the exit. Of the chairs, one had been replaced to fit the gigantic Lithorian, it had been increased in size, and took up a large part of the oval table. White overhanging lights illuminated the room, and on the table, a few documents were laid out.
Aknak grunted as he stepped into the station, his form noticing the decrease in gravity right away. Nevertheless low gravity was still better than none. The alien would bow towards his host in a respectful manner once greeted "Thank you for having me" he said before following the furrelian through the station, appreciating the ample ammounts of room The lithorian was more than a little surprised by the appearance of the briefing room, noticing the increased size of it and the more welcoming materials that went into its construction. Though he did not mind standing,he still appreciated the chair which he promptly sat on. Glancing at the wall,Aknak was caught off guard by the symbol his kind used in international affairs. It took the alien back to the chaotic meeting where all figureheads had to decide on its appearance,it was certainly an event he would not soon forget These creatures had certainly done their homework for the interaction, signifying in his mind that the topic was going to be more sensitive than usual "May I ask what we'll be discussing today?" he said while promplty crossing two of his arms on the wooden table, giving a glance at the documents with one eye while doing so

Kalena himself had already found himself a seat too, the wooden frame made itself known as the Furrelian man sat down in it. He sat on the other side of the table, in order to have a clear line of sight on the Lithorian, which wasn't that hard to do, considering the size of the creature. Kalena took one of the documents, gave it a quick approving read, and handed it over to the Lithorian. On it, a news report was written in Galactic common, which showed the declaration of war which the Furrelians had used. "I was not sure if you, and by extension, your entire kind, knew this yet, but the Furrelian Union has declared war against the Gauss Dominion, and as such, our resources might be running too thin to properly defend Babylon, and as such we would like your help with the defence of this system. This brings me to my first point and request." He cleared his troath, this was just the first of a few points he was asked to make. "Hereby, the Furrelian Union requests Lithorian assistance in the defence of the Babylon Free trade zone against pirates, smugglers, other outlaws, and above all, hostile nations."
Aknak eyed the documents with intrigue before they were handed to him, holding them with one pair of limbs while the other sat crossed on the table. His short eye could be seen darting about independently as he read the contents, giving a faint chittering noise as his version of a chuckle "Yes,I am quite aware. The galactic newsfeed wouldn't let me forget" he remarked, remembering just how often this topix came up. Indeed,it had gotten somewhat annoying in his eyes "Consider it accepted. We would be more than willing to cooperate with you on Babylon's defense. However I doubt such a time will come,an attack would only give us reason to pick sides against them in this conflict,in addition to all the other nations conducting their business here" he said in a confident tone, surely this 'Gauss Dominion' would not be so foolish as to actively make more foes "Is there anything else you'd like to request of us?" he said, proceeding to slide the documentation back to the furrelian
The response came as a surprise to Kalena, he didn't expect this ease. He took the document he had originally handed to the Lithorian back and put it away. Now came the second point, which might be harder to convince the Lithorian for. He took a deep breath, and handed the Lithorian another document, this time it was regarding the usage of the Lithorian outpost, near the Gauss Dominion, as a forwards staging ground. Kalena cleared his throat once more. "In order to finish this war as soon as possible, the Furrelian Union requests the ability to use a system in the Lithorian outpost in the Invilis corridor as a forward staging ground for the Furrelians, any system the Lithorians could give my people access to would be greatly appreciated by my government." He took a sip of his drink. "I am, of course, open for any negotiations you, and your people seem fit."
The captain took note of the furrelian's surprise, this was certainly going to be interesting. The alien looked over the next document meticulously, scanning it with a pair of eyes while another gave the diplomat an unblinking stare as they spoke. This was very different from their previous request, far less passive to say the least. Aknak weighed the possibilities in his mind, thinking of a way to sweeten this deal "There is a system there, dubbed Eatov, which should possess the infastructure you desire." the lithorian said, projecting some kind of holographic map from one hand which honed in on "Eatov's" location "Furthermore,a certain asset of ours could be used to make your travels to it much faster by way of wormhole generation." The projection shifted to an image of the Lithorian's latest megastructure, the "Aje",an artificial planetoid acting as a hub and generator for large scale wormhole travel "But you see..." the captain closed his hand, causing the shown psychic phenomena to fade "We will expect a monetary fee for both the system's use and that of our wormhole generator. These fees will stack up for every month that they are in use and shall be paid after the conflict ceases, regardless of its outcome." The organism now crossed its arms on the table and leaned closer, locking gazes with the furrelian representative "Is that acceptable?"
"Of course, I understand that a monetary fee is required, but already putting Eatov on the table for our use would be greatly appreciated. I must ask, though. Are the Lithorians open for negotiations regarding the monthly fee?" Kalena returned, Eatov would make a great asset for the war, and if the war was going to end quickly enough, the total price wouldn't be too high. 'Aje' would probably not be used, so with a bit of luck, that would lower the price. He quickly looked at the assets he was allowed to work with and gave his first proposal. "The Furrelian government proposes to pay a monthly fee of one million SIGEC, to be paid at the end of every month, it is expected that Aje will not be used, but if it will be, the proposed fee will rise to one and a half million SIGEC per month."
The lithorian's eyes narrowed at the diplomats first statement, knowing that a healthy round of bartering was about to commence "I assure you the megastructure is a marvel of our collective engineering, thus I feel inclined to insist that the sum be two million with its usage. That is of course,if you believe its leasing is required" the creature said, eyeing the furrelian's visage with particular interest
Healthy bartering was indeed going to commence, the Lithorian was right. Kalena looked at his notes, and then back at the Lithorian. "I do not doubt the ingenuity of the Collective, from what I've heard, Aje is truly a marvel of Lithorian engineering, but I do not think the Furrelian state would need to use it, if it would have to use it, it would honour the request for a fee of two million, but for now I think one million SIGEC per month should be enough, one and a quarter max. If you find these terms acceptable, I think we should move onto the final point of this meeting."
The creature looked at the notes the other alien had in their hands, wondering about their contents as it formulated its own response "Ah,my apologies if I came across as impolite. My kind has a bad habit of unintentionally being 'passive agressive' you see. Nevertheless,I do believe that a sum of one and a quarter million SIGEC justifies the use of Eatov for your operations. Now please,do proceed" Aknak said, leaning back against his seat and crossing all four of his arms.
"Alright," Kalena cleared his throat. "The final point I needed to discuss was the Political support of the Collective in the war against the Dominion. I don't expect the Collective to join the war, but the political support would be all that we ask from you. If you agree to this, I assume we can finalise this treaty." The Furrelian said, giving the document with the agreed terms over to the Lithorian.
Aknak thought for a moment as his eyes wondered about. He did not expect something like this and certainly did not appreciate the idea of facing the Dominion in the political arena, nevertheless, these creatures were the closest thing they had to allies "Very well,we shall support your cause on the political stage. It is the least we can do afterall" said the captain, looking over the document given to him "Surely you realise this can still damage our image,so you better win this"
"I assure you, if the war ends fast enough, it will not hurt your nation's image, and will probably only reinforce it." The Furrelian said. That was his entire agenda, nothing much, but it would be enough for the time being. More resources could be spared for the front lines as the defence of Babylon would be arranged by the Lithorians, the Furrelians could use a system for future invasions into the Gauss Dominion, though for a price, and the Union would be supported politically. More he could not ask for. "That will be all, I assume. This is a point for the future, as the relations between our kinds will only increase to benefit each other. I wish you the most of luck, and I hope to see you again soon." He said, giving the final part of the agreed terms to him, before offering the Lithorian his hand.
