Overview
The Puppeteer race as it is today is a thoroughly engineered people, from the very top to the very bottom. Their current forms were conceived at the height of their Second Golden Age (Fourth Era), and have remained relatively consistent since then. These bodies were meant to be disposable sheaths for soul-transferral with a good balance between form and function, to be beautiful across the entire species while remaining robust enough for most forms of labor and physical work should the need arise, and being capable of interfacing with virtually any implants or cybernetics meant for any race, barring extreme examples or requirements that the basic Puppeteer body was not designed for.
Ecology & Behavior
Puppeteers are neither diurnal or nocturnal due to their chosen form of habitat; the Worldship and its accompanying vessels. This means that Puppeteers are universally out-of-sync with any geoplanetary time cycles no matter where they are, though it typically takes individuals less than a week to accustom themselves to any new sleep schedule should they choose to.
Furthermore, the modern Puppeteer is accustomed to living within their all-encompassing Self Containment Suits, rarely if ever leaving them for any purpose outside of pure necessity. This has led to a massive degradation of immunities and antibodies on most Puppeteers, though capitalizing upon this using conventional microbiology is near-impossible due to the prevalence of the aforementioned Suits. Furthermore it is a simple affair for the Puppeteers to immunize themselves with their extensive experience with biology, especially their own.
Appearance & Capabilities
The average Puppeteer averages 6’ (183cm) and 70kg for males, and 5’10” (178cm) and 65kg for females, relatively similar to a baseline human average with some additional weight to account for slightly denser muscles. As such, their own capabilities are very similar to humans, with some added natural strength before any mechanical augmentations.
Of note is that the Puppeteers have made structural changes to their feet and ankles, to allow for even greater mobility and flexibility that the typical human foot and ankle could not dream of. Appearance-wise it would be difficult to visually differentiate a human and Puppeteer foot and ankle without a physical demonstration of their respective capabilities.
However, their appearance is something else entirely. The Puppeteer form was concocted to be the right meld of form and function, and it lives up to it. The Puppeteer form is a work of art, with each of their people being not unlike a living sculpture of marble of porcelain, with smooth white skin and eyes that could be any color on the visible spectrum. Their hair is similarly and universally silky-smooth to the touch and can easily be grown out to ridiculous lengths before any sign of wear and tear occurs.
Blood
Perhaps the most intriguing topic of Puppeteer physiology is their blood. It is not the red iron-based hemoglobin as most biologicals or even the blue copper-based hemoglobin that some more exotic biologicals may have.
Puppeteer blood is yellow, as their hemoglobin is iridium-based. This was chosen due to the very long usage lifespan of chloro-carbonyl-bis(tri phenylphosphine)-iridium, of which their hemoglobin is based upon with the added benefit of also being able to reversibly bind hydrogen molecules.
This presents a unique problem and leads to a modern issue as well, as their iridium-based hemoglobin is highly susceptible to degradation when presented with light of sufficient strength, leading to their modern extensive usage of the Suits. The Puppeteers evidently considered this to be an acceptable tradeoff despite its downsides.
Brain
The Puppeteer brain is a marvel of bioengineering, with as much neurons packed in every schism of space as could be safely utilized. Combined with vastly increased neural density, the Puppeteer mind is leagues better than most other sentients that dare to compete, especially when comparing brains of similar volume.
This enables the Puppeteers to be excellent at anything intellectual, as well as granting them powerful psychic powers and stellar multitasking capabilities. These qualities are also prevalent without any remarkable discrepancy amongst all their P-Synth population.
Psychic Abilities
Puppeteers are genetic psions, which grants their entire race psionic powers of relatively consistent aptitude and power. Within the Puppeteer gene is the instinct to be capable of their first psionic powers of telekinetically “puppeting” an inanimate object, used as a gateway into their newfound powers in mental and physical capacities. As such, it could be said that the Puppeteer are naturally gifted psions across their entire race with few exceptions, and the origin to their current racial name.
In addition, this power can be trained to perform any number of necessary psionic uses, including general but longer-range telekinesis, mind-scrying, and other uses, be they beneficial, benign or malicious in intent.
Cybernetic Adaptability
The Puppeteer body was built with the adaptability of implants in mind from the very start, which grants the modern Puppeteer no small variety of access to implants and cybernetic add-ons or replacements to their bodies.
There is still a limit to what cybernetics or implants their bodies can accept however; for instance, if it requires tremendous strength to use without crushing the rest of the body, or requires the use of an organ that is not present on the Puppeteer, such implants would be useless or dangerous to install on a Puppeteer.
Immortality
Puppeteer genetics were designed so that they would never cellularly expire, unlike many other sentients. The typical accumulation of age and cellular degradation just does not happen amongst the Puppeteers, leading them to be eternally youthful and potentially immortal, so long as their bodily needs are properly taken care of.
Bio-Modifiability
As the Puppeteer body was purpose built as opposed to evolved naturally, it is by no stretch of the imagination that sufficiently advanced geneticists or similar would be capable of taking the Puppeteer genome and sculpting it as they see fit.
Breeding and Childrearing
Puppeteer bodies are xeno-compatible with virtually any other alien species known and to be known, giving their race some huge leeway as to potential partners. Whether or not intercourse would be dangerous is a different topic, however.
Puppeteer can easily make for poor parents, however. Due to the entirely artificial nature of their modern form, there is no inherent, instinctual parental care instilled in them upon the birth of their child, nor do they hold any form of sympathy to the young, even if it’s their own. As such Puppeteers could make for very poor parents should the stars align.
That being said, the Puppeteer people are not necessarily incapable of love. A Puppeteer parent who takes on the challenge of parenthood as a loving parent and one who invests heavily into their childrens’ mental capabilities will be more than capable of raising potentially immortal, psychic, highly intelligent and very productive members of their society, if not better.
