Vilrik's sensors lit up as the two Carnaithian cruisers returned to the Spascia system. Following closely behind them was a 2km wide spherical ship, at first only its gravitic signature giving away its position until its stealth systems began to power down, revealing the rest of itself. A transmission came from the sphere, tightbeamed to Vilrik's corvette and broadcasted to the Admiral's ship as well.
"Inquisitor, Admiral, this is Filnor. We have returned with the package. The rest of our escort should be arriving shor-... right now."
Six Rigel class dreadnoughts and fifteen Eridanus class battleships appeared, coming into the system at different angles. Following closely behind was a 3 cruiser escort for each dreadnought and battleship. All ships made formation around the sphere as it entered into the system.
"Union should be arriving soon as well, assuming Inquisitor Khabaros reached them in time."
No Carnaithian ships actually resided in the system, defense of the system instead reliant on the power of the numerous defense stations and gun platforms. That's not to say it was completely unsupported, however. While closed for the time being to prevent information leaks or quick getaways, a CAE-built Janus gateway provided quick access to the system from any other linked star, and it could even be opened in the midst of interdiction.
"This is system sub-headquarters number two. Annoliddan contacts confirmed. Union assets inbound - secure the item," An unnamed voice announced, referring to the Lesser Light in the latter part of the announcement. Interdiction emitters began spooling in stations throughout the system, ready to lock out any possible assailants once the Union arrived.
Two very small and barely noticeable FTL signatures burst into life from the Janus Gate as two very dark blue sleek hulls pulled themselves free. The two Union Nighthawk class stealth vessels powered up their defenses, although not their weapons sending IFF signals and recognition codes to everyone present.
This was an incredibly important situation. The Union had not encountered a Lesser Light since the days of the Evensong war, and while the lights were shrouded and mired in secrecy and mystery the fact that one had been found in the Ancerious galaxy, let alone in an Axiomatic installation prompted investigation and serious insight, after all the Axioms had been created to fight the lights once.
Hargun himself sat in the command chair of one of the vessels the captain sat next to him directing the crew.
"All codes confirm sir"
"Good notify them we are ready to begin extraction ASAP the quicker we can get this over with the quicker we can prevent anything from going wrong" Hargun replied with a nod.
Once IFF systems confirmed Union presence in the system, the majority of the Inquisition ships made a sharp turn away from the system and began calculating jump vectors for exit, moving out away from interdiction range. The remaining ships, 5 Meneac-Abell class cruisers, continued to flank the sphere as it drew closer to the system center. Inquisitor Vilrik's corvette in turn met up with the formation, its presence signaling for the sphere to begin opening its forward hemisphere shell into eight sections, folding away to reveal a conglomerate of containment measures surrounding a central point, as well as various platforms upon which stood small groups of Annoliddans protected only by atmospheric field generators against the void of space.
"Union of Worlds, it is excellent to have you here," opened Vilrik. "The package is now ready for transfer a more permanent holding. Please excuse the congregation my people have made around it; its mere presence has caused quite a stir, but without proper methods to study and/or exploit it, keeping it to ourselves would simply be a tremendous waste."
A scowl once again wrapped about Akens' face. They wanted to extract the item, but even what little information he had read about the Evensong War screamed that this was a bad idea. He knew better than to snap at the head admiral of the Union, but the effect of these items - which he had reason to believe was one of the "Lesser Lights" referenced in historic record - on non-humans wasn't documented, as far as he knew.
"Fellow Admirals," he began, "I think we're better off discussing the fate of the item first. As far as I'm aware, humans don't react well to proximity to such a thing... I'd be a damned liar if I said I was confident in my own safety around it, though."
"I propose we conduct a meeting over holographics, this way we can agree upon a suitable location to contain and study the Lesser Light. It has been over a century since my people last encountered one, and the Union wishes to determine if its sudden appearance is the spark of something new" Hargun replied.
The actual presence of a Lesser Light in the Ancerious galaxy was a freightening prospect, did it mean the Evensong war never truly ended? Did it mean that the Axioms had actually failed in their duties? The sheer number of questions were staggering. But Hargun knew those could be awnsered later, what some of the galaxies nations could do with a Light if used offensively was titanic and protecting it for study was the most critical course of action.
"Agreed," replied Vilrik. "I will also provide sensory feed from the platform so it may be safely observed from a distance."
An electrical buzz started at his feet and continued up Vilrik's body. Both this outline and multiple camera feeds and sensor hardpoints from the Lesser Light's containment sphere were tightbeamed to the others. "These are sensors to detect any energy or radioactivity the Light is giving off within a reasonable spectrum, but results are inclonclusive for us thus far," Vilrik's hologram continued. "Without your input there is little to gleam from these readings, much less make use of." A compressed chart of data appeared next to him. It detailed what the Lesser Light had been 'doing' during captivity.
Aken's visually-angry visage was the first part of his hologram that appeared. Overall, he was quite slender, with a vast mane and misleading scowl. His uniform was well-kept, exceedingly so. Obviously an embodiment of his pride in the system under his command.
"It hasn't effected you or your people at all?" He asked, directed to Vilrik. "I would ask to have a volunteer or group of such approach the item, but I feel we're running quite short on time. It would have been best had we decided all of this before the Union arrived."
In the background, a number of curious scientists in the system's research platforms began examining the data, making what they could of it.
"I would advise not sending anyone near it, a Lesser Light can do things that break the laws of reality. We may have been harried by them for an entire segment of our history but we only have the most basic understanding of what they are. As far as we could tell they are manifestations of some kind of defense system for the human race, well from my realm anyway, which are triggered when the species is threatened. We theorise it was inplanted by the Nakai but we have no actual proof or pin point genetic that causes it. Either way these things learn, they can overcome near any defenses and they can bypass physics. They are dangerous and mysterious with equal measure" Hargun explained in his holographic form.
"I would also wish to know what Vilrik asked, any affects on your people can be massive, they single handedly created a cult to assist their unearthly mission" Hargun then added, he was worried. The Evensong war was a serious point in humanities history, what happened was serious.
"It did not directly affect my people, no," replied Vilrik. his full appearance coming into view. His form was lanky even by Annoliddan standards, almost comically added to by his elongated face and hands, and complete lack of uniform save a standard jumpsuit. He waved over to a video feed, showing when the Lesser Light was first recovered.
It showed Garrin, the Templar responsible for its safe retrieval suddenly bursting into a ball of light moments after handing it over to another. A similar process occurred with two other individuals prior to the Light being put into containment, the second burning in inextinguishable flames, and the third being pulled into a central point upon herself until none her remained in sight.
"All of these incidents were, for a lack of a better term, self inflicted. Tracing their lineage, each individual you saw banished from existence were descendants of demigod annoliddans, save the second one Harfl. He was not, but his death was accompanied by a voice we had not heard in an epoch. It was one of gods, Krekonaus, simply stating 'don't touch that'."
The view shifted, showing the assembled mass of annoliddans in various religious garments ranging from decorated robes to worn tribal wear, all assembled around the platform prior to the Lesser Light being put in a more secure holding.
"While the object itself has had little to no effect, its mere presence riled up our deities who have not made contact with us since our departure from our home galaxy. As much as some of our still pious citizenry would like to throw themselves into it to embrace oblivion with their masters, I doubt that is there intended fate. Handing it over to someone else is a mercy on all parties involved."
Aken squinted, his aperture-like eye muscles closing in on his pupils from all sides except from above, as he heard of what triggered the arrival of Lesser Lights. He was getting the inkling that the bauble was the least of their concerns.
"If they're a defense measure for when your people's existence is threatened, then why is there one now? Is there any indication of what may have caused its appearance?" He inquired, bringing his arms up to a cross and shifting into a pose leaning oh-so-slightly rearward. His tail waved slowly. He thought a moment, watching the recording of the Annoliddans again, focusing on the deaths of the Templars particularly.
"While you're at it, is there any safe way of transporting one? I'm hardly in the mood to have science staff evaporate." Nonetheless, a number of personnel moved about in the hangars of one of the central stations.
Vilrik called up another video feed, this one significantly from the others. It was a first-person perspective of an Annoliddan, specifically Inquisitor Khabaros, as he broke into a cryo-chamber holding an Axiomatic soldier. "I do not know how these Lesser Lights are supposed to come into existence," Vilrik explained, "but this one is the result of breaking into a training simulation."
The footage continued to show Khabaros's vision in the simulation. The vividly detailed defending soldiers were in stark contrast to their surroundings, even more so to the multicolored beings they were fighting. Amidst the soft, plushy mountains of their surroundings was an almost cartoony village, in the center of which sat the Lesser Light. The footage went on to show Khabaros dying, repeatedly, to the soldier he had linked with, until he became a curiosity to her. Eventually, it showed the soldier regarding Khabaros as a friend and ally, protecting and assisting one another, her bringing random gifts from among the debris and scorched battlefield, until she retrieved the Lesser Light itself and gave it to him.
The scene snapped violently back to reality as the simulation and alarms signaled the installation's defenses coming online. Still, despite the chaos, the hue-changing nugget in Khabaros's hand was unmistakable.
"I can retrieve the full footage and sensory input, or even the full memory itself for study. That individual, Bzr as she calls herself, seemed to pluck the Lesser Light from the simulation and give it to Khabaros in reality. We have multiple theories as to how this happened, ranging from psionic influence pulling it into realspace to the Lesser Light being in control from the beginning. I doubt our theories will bear fruit however. As for how a Lesser Light usually comes into being and if this was an atypical event, I was hoping the Union would have insight. And on the subject of containment, we have placed it in the center of the complex you see now. A series of overlapping gravity wells hold it in place without applying any sort of pressure on the Light itself, unless should it start moving. We also have no idea if it's capable of teleportation out of the safe zone, but just in case we have passive interdiction preventing any tears in realspace from occurring upon it. Admiral Hargun, does the Union have any advice for how it may better be contained, or any input on its creation?"
"The fact that one has been produced now indicates that something is afoot, but this disturbs me more than both of you can imagine. The fact that these things took the construction of the then Cardinal fleet and the eventual evolution of the Axioms we know now to defeat tells us that if they do reappear it will be disastrous for everyone." Hargun seemed to run his hand through his hair with stress as he reviewed the videos sent to him.
He couldnt understand why such would exist.
"For containment I suggest maximum security, the thickest and most dense materials you have, energy shields of all kinds and interdiction. I will even supply Union phase shields for such. They have been known to pass through nearly any substance without care, but the fact this one is still shows that it may not have a purpose. As for its creation we have no idea, they manifested out of thin space in orbit around one of the outer gas giants of our home solar system and then rapidly moved in system towards our home Earth. Eventually we intercepted them, but they changed and evolved to counter us, eventually we had to create self learning and improving AI to stop them. Thats how the Axioms were created anyway. I suggest that it is confined to a maximum security facility with joint oversight and research between our empires. This event is quite unprecedented..."
Aken maintained the expression towards the other two, arms still crossed. If these things defended Terrans, then why - and he was guessing - attack Terra? The Demand had destroyed the world centuries ago in the IO, but what had been seen of the Union's iteration of it served as a great amount of information related to it for Carnaith. To be destroyed by a once-benign titan and a supposed "protector" were two entirely different scenarios, even ignoring the difference in likely end scenarios.
"I'd be willing to house it here in Spascia if it's that easy for one with a goal to breach containment, but it's really up to you, Admiral, since you're the one with the most knowledge here, though I do imagine that its effects may not manifest here at all, given that Ancerious itself does not have a parallel earth."
"Indeed it does not, as such that may be a perfectly viable reason as to why this particular light has not done what its forebearers have done. I agree with housing it in such, a joint overview could then observe it and if it does break containment and go active it will cause minimal damage." He sighed this was definately something he didnt think he may have to have dealt with in his lifetime. The Lights were a tale from the old time, back before the Union of Worlds...
"Vilrik do you agree with the location of where to store such?"
"Yes," Vilrik responded immediately. "I can also offer its current containment if not replaced to be upgraded. I only ask that, under all of yours' discretion, we continue to observe as much as we contain it here. It is quite a spectacular specimen, albeit a dangerous one according to history."
Hargun nodded "Of course, we must analyse it and observe it irregardless of what may happen, this may be a key to my peoples history at least that we have not gotten a chance to unlock. They last appeared in a period where we could not understand or study them, now we have the chance to do so and possibly unlock their secrets, but while taking all nessecary precautions of course"
"I'll get with system construction and housing command then. I request dossiers of personnel estimates your nations would like to house here for study and their needs. In the meantime, you're welcome to dock with station twenty-three so we can meet in person or leave as you please. We'll be able to house the item within seventy-two hours," Aken responded once again, looking about. "I look forward to the research endeavors."
