The Dectrose had weighed their options, the recent events had complicated certain plans, but one was still more than available. After checking up on their next diplomatic mission, Decoroso Command wanted to take this one at a more.. subtle approach than the others that seemingly jumped directly into a hostile zone. Instead, they would send out a communication drone first, then a small fleet to follow-up. It was all set in place to ensure the easiest and most productive First Contact the Dectrose have had in their long history.
So, without much ceremony, a drone was sent into the wormhole at the edge of what the reports stated was outside of the infamous DMZ and the Vaanitas territory, then broadcasted a message to any sensors in that direction. "This is the Dectrose Empire, we are seeking to speak to the Vaanitas Supremacy. Please respond to this drone with your message, and we shall send a small fleet to discuss First Contact and diplomatic ventures. We look forward to hearing from you soon."
Whilst the signal came from just outside the DMZ it still caused quite a stir amongst the defense force. Fighters and monitors began heading towards it almost immediately and defense platforms weapons came to bear, their armament from simple point defence to the colossal anti capital ship guns that ran down their centre and made up most of their bulk.
Commodore Tavir Karn, commander of the DMZ, listened to the message and held off on the order to fire as he considered the transmission. The command centre aboard the starbase was silent as they awaited his orders, the tapping of his fingers on the arm of his chair the only sound echoing around the room. “Open a channel, lock weapons. Be prepared to fire on my order.” Karn commanded and his order was relayed across the defensive network.
“This is Commodore Tavir Karn, commander of the Vaanitas DMZ. We are willing to speak to you, though your method has been…unorthodox.” He transmitted back to the drone as his staff awaited further instructions.
The drone sat there for several minutes, silent as it transmitted the message back, then replied "This is Rear Admiral Marcus Adler, of the Dectrose Empire. Our goal was to not interfere with your daily routine and offer an alternative solution to contact. If you prefer, I can have my ship plus two escorts bring me to the location the drone is currently situated. We simply wish for a discussion about who we are, recent events and a few quick questions. After such, we will depart and let you carry on with your day,"
Once again he listened. "Indeed, I would rather talk 'face to face' so to speak. I shall hear what you have to say Admiral. Proceed to your drone's location." Karn replied. "I would also recommend you keep scanning to a minimum, our automated defenses can be a little...over zealous." He concluded. The monitor fleet established somewhat of a cordon around an AU away from the drone at Karn's instructions and fighter wings flew back and forth along this picket.
"Of course, we'll be there shortly" The message replied, the drone now seemingly packing it's sensors in to return to the incoming ships. After some time, the three ships, a cruiser and two frigates slid neatly out of the three wormholes that appeared above the drone, the drone soon flying back into the hanger bay of the cruiser, as the ships kept their sensors in check, making sure that only passive scans for navigation where permitted, after all, it would be rude to turn on any unnecessary scans.
The comms opened up, broadcasting towards the Vaanitas ships. "Gentlemen, I am Rear Admiral Adler, of the Dectrose Empire. I am fully prepared to take a shuttle to your preferred meeting place, or, you are more than welcome to have this meeting onboard my ship, whichever you feel comfortable with."
The monitor fleet remained stationary. Whilst weapons weren't charged they were certainly bared, bristling with firepower beyond their size. The message was relayed back to the station where Karn once more paused to consider their words. The command centre was now a hive of activity, messages being sent off to nearby fleets in the event they were needed and the Count's staff being alerted to what was occurring as he was busy elsewhere.
"As you may have noticed by the number of weapons pointed at you we are nothing if not cautious when it comes to defense" he chuckled, a coarse, gravelly sound. "Proceed to the middle of the three starbases, and dock at hangar 11. I will meet you there." Karn concluded. "Oh, and try to stay close to our side of the DMZ the Cricaen's may not be as...accommodating" he added with a smirk before closing the channel and proceeding to his chamber where aides would adorn him in his ceremonial suit of armour.
"Helmsman" Adler spoke out, the reply coming "Yes, Sir?" "Take us in, as per their strict orders. XO Gordanos has the deck in my absence." He stood from his command chair, and replied to the Vaanitas "Of course, you can never be too prepared, I will be there hastily." He was already in his admiralty uniform, a purple suit with white and black accents, a few medals clanging on his chest from the war against the Meralis, shoulder stripes and all.
As per protocol, a fireteam was readied up and sent to his location, acting as a guard for him before he moved his hand up "Hold up, we'll ask the Vaanitas permission to bring the security detail before you guys go stepping off into their station. they are likely tense enough as it is on the DMZ." The cruiser parked in position, along with it's frigates lazily floating to either side, and set in, the shuttle dispatching with the fireteam and Adler set off to dock at Hanger 11, soon touching down. The pilot checked his gauges, testing the surrounding temperature and climate to adjust the internal climate control of the Dectrothians, before giving the thumbs-up to open the side door, and let down the ramp.
He awaited the arrival of Karn, to which he would ask "Would it be alright to bring my security detail with me? Standard Protocol but I can leave them in the shuttle if you like."
As the rest of the monitor fleet went back to its patrols, a dozen and accompanying fighters flanked the Dectrose vessels, 6 either side. The DMZ assumed it's usual state of normalcy beyond this, though plenty of weapons still tracked the vessels, a precaution more than a statement of intent.
Karn arrived in the hangar bay with his own entourage, several honour guards dressed in their ornate suits of crimson armour with hardlight glaives held in hand. They parted and formed a line either side of Karn. The rest of the hangar was filled with soldiers and war droids at attention to welcome their guests.
"That is permissible, I would not deny a man his guards unless we were to engage in ritual combat. And you shouldn't need to worry about that." Karn replied to the question. He dusted off his breastplate, the golden metal ornately engraved with images his achievements in battle, both space combat and one on one duels. With his hands clasped behind his back he waited for the visitors to emerge.
The Admiral stepped off the ramp with his fireteam in tow, their weapons held neatly on their backs, mostly just PDWs as standard. He gave a survey over the hanger, feeling memories of the hayday of the Dectrose Empire as it fought the Meralis on Danterrin. It felt good, right. Turning to Karn now, he stepped forward, stopping and giving both a salute and a bow "An honor to meet you, thank you for having us aboard this station."
He stood upright again, and nodded to the soldiers and the crimson-clad figures "I see your men are orderly and disciplined, too often I've seen nations in battle that throw such order out the window, breaking battle comms and acting unruly. I expect your soldiers are more fine-tuned than to let that happen." He smiled, and dropped his head down a little "You lead, I'll follow, we have a few events to discuss."
Karn inclined his head in response as he took measure of the Admiral and his retinue. The honour guards didn't move, nor did the soldiers, disciplined enough to stand there until they passed out if ordered to.
"An army without order is no army at all. Without doctrine and order they are not soldiers." Karn spoke seriously, proud of his men. At Alder's words he turned and began walking towards one of the half dozen elevators to the hangar's rear. The honour guard banged the blunt end of their weapons on the hangar floor, the clang echoing, before turning and falling in either side of him.
"I'm glad we can agree on that." Even to the fireteam following Adler, the professionalism of the guards made them feel some respect for their discipline, as they kept a tight formation, giving the other guards an air of professionalism in kind. "Though speaking of armies, I have heard that your nation was among many that fought the Davians, where you able to see any action or are you stationed here until further notice?"
Karn let out an audible sigh. “Whilst I would have greatly enjoyed crushing the Davian fleet over Voi Con, my duties as commander of the DMZ came first. Many of my men transferred away for the conflict, though little battle was actually seen.” He spoke with a bitter tone. “A war over to quickly.”
He entered the elevator with both his entourage and Adler’s, before the lift sped upwards rapidly, though to its occupants they barely felt it moving.
"You would enjoy fighting the Meralis Republic then, we've been in some state of war against them for.. hell, over a decade. But as the Dectrose say, war progresses technology." Adler glanced to his men, and back again.
"It sounds like the Vaanitas may be the same, though in this galaxy, conflicts seem to sprout out of every star. Including our own now." He rocked his head in the slightest way, almost like a nod as they sped up in the elevator.
He gave a slight nod "Indeed it does. It is the great innovator." He spoke as the elevator went all the way to the top and opened on a reasonably small observation deck that clearly doubled as a canteen, with a round bar in the centre where food and drink would be served. Other than structural supports, the walls and ceiling were completely glass, or a clear substance at any rate, with a view out over the DMZ. The floor was currently empty, cleared so this meeting could be held. Two of the honour guards stepped out and remained either side of the elevator as Karn proceeded across the floor to a booth that looked out on the DMZ and wormholes it had been built to protect, one near and the other across the no man's land in between, on the Cricaen's side.
He took a seat on one side of the booth, the high backed benches simple but comfortable, and gestured for Adler to do the same. At the same time he made a gesture with his hand and the remaining honour guard moved off, standing around the deck to give them some level of privacy.
With a wordless command, the Dectrothian fireteam moved away to do the same, the brilliant structures, the clear material and the view of the two wormholes where, to Adler, an impressive location to hold diplomacy. "Well, I'm not one to waste time so I'll get to the issues at hand, firstly, I'd like to give you my nation's location, as well as our borders and places of interest for further communication." He set down an RAVD node, and the orb booted up, glowing bright, then dull orange before producing the document and 'sliding' it over to Karn as a downloadable copy.
"Next, our nation's history here in the Ancerious Galaxy, basic information as well as our listed allies and enemies. I'll make it clear that the Dectrose are part of FDC, and those allies are mostly in that organization as well." Like clockwork, the documents appeared and sent to Karn. "I'll let you take a look at those for a moment, and we can move onto the situation at hand in this sector of the galaxy. If you have questions, I'll gladly answer them."
Accepting the information, he took a brief look over area’s that the starbase’s AI deemed useful before sitting back. “I see” he spoke simply and turned his attention back to Alder. “So, what do you want to talk about concerning the west?” Karn asked.
The AI meanwhile was gathering everything they could from all over AncNet in relation to the Dectrose and their actions across the galaxy and analyzing countless possible outcomes and scenario’s of the meeting.
"As you may or may not have heard, the UWA and the UDS have decided to declare war on the Dectrose after a covert mission became hot. As it stands, the two are hotheadedly trying to make some sort of statement against the empires of this galaxy, the tyranny of such, so on and so forth. They may try to drag in people who they think will stand with them, but they should know that this is their war. They wanted it right here and now, so in all regards, this is their personal vendetta."
"I would like to know two things concerning this problem with these 'Democracies', firstly, I would like to formally ask that you, the Vaanitas and the Cricaen, both in AURA, refrain from becoming embroiled in their trivial conflict. There's no reason that you or your ally should shed your blood in their crusade. So, on this, would you accept a treaty of non-aggression to be signed between the two of us, as well as the Cricaens when we finish here?"
He cleared his throat, speaking slightly monotoned "The second one we need to be certain on, is a rumor that came from the UWA in a diplomatic mission. They seem to be suspicious about you, and seem to think you're involved with slavery for some reason. As far as we have found on Ancnet or other sources, there's nothing to confirm that you are in fact involved in slavery. Personally, all I need is something to tell Decoroso so we can file this away. So, on this record, are you involved with anything like that?" Adler tilted his head a little, disinterested in his last statement.
“Considering that we’ve had one conversation with the UWA and they proved themselves to be cowards, I hardly see where their accusations come from.” He spoke with annoyance at the mention of the UWA.
“The UDS however have proven themselves honourable. The only reason we have no diplomatic ties with them as that at the time we spoke to them first they were members of the WRL. Our respect for them is the only reason they-“ he spoke before stopping abruptly as the AI began speaking into his earpiece. He held up a hand to Alder in apology for the sudden interruption and made several expressions, mostly frowns and nods as he listened. “I see…” he spoke to himself more than anyone.
His gaze returned to Adler. “My station AI has been looking over AncNet as we talked, just browsing for information. You aren’t exactly popular throughout the galaxy.” He spoke with a serious tone. “Your actions have made you foes on many sides, the AGA seem no fan of you after actions towards the Artifician Unanimity. You seem to be playing a dangerous game, one my people would have no part of.” Karn continued.
“You’re people are untrustworthy, any offered hand a distraction from the knife in the other. Your people lack honour and will soon pay the consequences of their actions. But fear not Admiral, you will not be there to see your people fall.” He smirked.
At his words the Honour guards around the room leveled the glaives at the Dectrose guards and released blasts of scalding radioactive plasma into them at near point blank ranges. At the same time the station raised interdiction and weapons all across the DMZ began locking on to the three ships before unleashing their salvo’s. Super-heavy MAHTS cannons, and station grade torpedoes launched from all across the defensive line, speeding towards their quarry. In the case of the Torpedoes they were there nigh on instantly as they jumped atop or within the Dectrose ships, IFF interdiction allowing them passage.
Karn meanwhile channeled his psionics and began to choke the Admiral before him with them. “I commit you and your people to the void Admiral, though I must commend you on your poker face. For a while there we were considering you a potential ally. A shame, but perhaps this time I shall get to participate in the festivities.” He smirked as he tightened the throttling.
The fireteam tried to react but the Vaanitas had them by surprise, there was little they could do but to die, leaving Adler alone with Karn, though through the throttling, he struggled little. His augmentations automatically taking in the air from other locations, as he struggled to nod, a synthetic voice taking over "Yes, a shame indeed. Though recall that AGA did nothing for the Artificia, not even a phone call to us. I recall the reason being 'it happened before they became an AGA member.'"
"We also used the Oracle on the Davians, if you would have asked us, we would have also given you Voi Con's location, as well as a map, likely more up-to-date than any other source. You see, it may be a game of Trikarta, but if you want out of the game, all you need to do is ask. The Ancnet can say this or that, but do you really believe everything you hear on there?"
“A snake until the end. Your dedication to your cause is at least worthy of note, even if your methods disgust me.” Karn spoke as he lifted him into the air whilst choking. The guards finished up their work with a thrust of their glaives into the downed fireteam, before assembling around Karn “Begone.” He spoke simply and crushed his spinal cord as two of the honour guard ran Adler through.
"Amusing", the last words to go through Adler's mind. He was executed like some religious deity, suspended in the air, his spine crushed and speared through with glaives, and it was amusing. The diplomatic mission was messy, ended up not achieving it's goals, though now he knew fully what Saber felt.
It was a setback, but as his mind filtered into his new body, he thought to himself "What a pity, that so many will soon die because they couldn't see the bigger picture looming just out of sight."
Karn sighed as he released the corpse from his ‘grasp’ and it slid off of the blades impaled in it. “One door closes, another opens.” He lamented briefly before turning to one of his guards. “Contact the Archduke, let him know that he shall have his war.” He smirked and looked out at the void of space as the body was dragged away.
The ships had brought up defences, put up a valiant last stand but it was too little, too late. The main ship detonated, and so too the two frigates escorting it. A struggled smile crept on his face "Only thing is, you haven't had first-hand experience with us, you may find your experience much different than the so-called righteous or galactic police or the anti-imperial crusaders. We all have different cards, but do you want to really throw this hand aside? After all, three ships and a few dead people aren't anything to cry over."
So, without much ceremony, a drone was sent into the wormhole at the edge of what the reports stated was outside of the infamous DMZ and the Vaanitas territory, then broadcasted a message to any sensors in that direction.
