Galactic South East
The galactic north and core were not the only places to be ravaged by war, the galactic south east had its own problems to deal with. While only a few were involved in the huge flames of the 2nd Ancerious war many more were engulfed in their own conflicts, predominantly the new power bloc CORE found itself engaged with the seemingly numberless swarms of the Voleant Hive and the emotionless legions of the System. Already the Avilun Capital of New Aviluna had been destroyed and the Ye’Tule capital had been heavily damaged along with the ZYPHER Manai system having to be cleansed of Voleant infestation.
While CORE had suffered they had beaten back their enemies numerous times, but still the war had dragged on causing political instability within the power bloc and causing members like the Avilun to slowly withdraw from the hostile Ancerious galaxy altogether. A new plan had to be formulated, the war needed to be won and fast. It would be no easy feat but there was simply no other way, the System and Voleant had to be exterminated. Thankfully for CORE the System were already on the run, with a combined attack by not only the entirety of CORE but also with Union help the System was pushed out of several of their own systems, their defence fleets were destroyed totally and their worlds glassed or destroyed totally by the Echo super weapons and Dirge Amalgam.
With the System now withdrawing from their worlds to a new location on the edge of the Golden expanse the CORE forces repeatedly harried them, destroying convoys, military forces and transports as they salvaged everything they could. Supported by the Voleant their collective defence was not enough and the CORE fleets merely battered aside any defence they encountered, it was revenge for the worlds lost before. Unfortunately for the System with their main numbers now settling next to the Golden Expanse they barely had warning when the form of Eos entered the expanse, causing massive distortions, expansions and contractions. It was one of these expansions that engulfed the Systems new space and wiped them out which was In turn reported back to CORE by a joint scouting force of BSO and the Echoes, with one of the two foes gone the Voleant were now on the back foot and CORE was ready to enact their plan.
It began with a series of raids across Voleant infested space. Carried out by ZYPHER, Union, Echo, Dirge and Alfurian fleets of around 10 vessels total these small raiding fleets gathered sensor data, located main hive systems and defences and then withdrew, each time garnering Voleant defenders into amassing for a potential attack but to no avail. No attack came. The next part in the plan was carried out once a comprehensive picture of Voleant space was built up, a joint fleet of Echo and Alfurian forces jumped into one of the main hive systems instantly causing the Voleant to react. While they had enjoyed inflicting much damage with their drones before they were rendered useless as the Alfurian flak merely wiped them from the void in the tens of thousands. With the Echoes targeting and destroying the escorts of a large hive vessel systematically a boarding venture was sent in by both factions, with not much time before hive reinforcements arrived the two factions fought threw waves of bio-engineered killers in the bowls of a crippled hive vessel before finally confronting the queen.
Instead of killing the monstrosity they captured it, hauling its stunned form back to their vessels for study. The hive ship now being destroyed by combined firepower was left to fall into the atmosphere of the infested world there to cause untold devastation on impact. With their quarry captured and morale high the two fleets transported the queen to the Amalgam, where it was studied extensively by CORE scientists and the Dirge hive mind itself even breaking the queen down painfully piece by piece to unlock its genetic secrets. However the queen itself had attempted to call for help, and the Voleant had answered, tracking the cries of their lost sister multiple other queens and their swarms arrived to destroy the desecrators.
Even as the scientists and the Dirge worked to find what they were looking for the void outside was riven with explosions and projectiles as the combined CORE armada and Voleant swarm forces battled for supremacy. Even with their numbers the Voleant simply could not win, with the synergy of the CORE fleets working together supported by Union vessels and also the sheer destructive power of the Amalgam itself their fleet was torn apart. Drones were battered from the void in entire swarms by Alfurian and Union overlapping flak and CIWS, cruisers and support constructs were blasted apart by concentrated ZYPHER and Dirge firepower and hulking hive ships were vaporised by the Echoes focused fire and ElderBlade super weapon. In the end the Voleant that had come to help their sister had only ended up dying for a lost cause. Even as the last few enemy ships were destroyed the Dirge announced they had found the projects holy grail.
A viral weapon, one that would target the Voleant synaptic ability and network, cutting workers off from the queens and killing the queen’s immense brains quickly, leaving them leaderless, without focus and totally barbaric. Unable to fight back CORE forces would mop up what was left. The CORE members agreed that this would be the only solution, and even the Union who shunned the use of viral agents in war or genocide agreed that the Voleant were a foe whose only destiny should be complete annihilation. It was decided, as the Dirge synthesised the agent in sufficient quantities the CORE forces mobilised a small strike fleet to deliver the weapon into the heart of infested space. Spearheaded by the Echoes and ZYPHER a small fleet of around 200 vessels was deployed into one of the main hive systems of Voleant space, rather than engaging the defences or ships in system the fleet fired a huge bombardment towards the planet, thousands of projectiles on course for the planet were intercepted by orbital defences and drone collisions but it was not enough. Where the projectiles got through there was no grand explosion, no thermonuclear warheads as thought, just distributed pathogens.
The allied fleet withdrew before they were engaged and the Voleant ignored the incident, rapidly accelerating ship growth for another attack on CORE. That was when the virus began to strike, after incubating and spreading across Voleant space it began to affect the workers first, cutting their link to their queens they turned rabid, killing everything around them in feeding frenzies as the queens began to lose their links to more than just their workers. It was then they realised, desperately trying to do what they could it was simply too late. Queens began to drop like flies, their hive worlds descending into anarchy and mindless feeding, and the Voleant synaptic web collapsed in short order. Almost on cue, the CORE clean-up effort began, huge fleets attacked outlaying hives before moving inwards.
With no synaptic web the Voleant were totally defenceless, their ships lashed out but were annihilated rapidly and in short order by co-ordinated CORE forces, worlds were glassed by Echo WarScorch fleets and ZYPHER orbital assault fleets, their surfaces running like lava as untold firepower was deployed to kill every living thing on the planet. Other worlds were consumed by the Dirge who let loose millions of their own bio constructs onto hive planets, fighting and consuming their way through untold Voleant horrors in the tunnels and warrens hundreds of meters below the planet’s surface ensuing that no Voleant creature remained. Other worlds however were just outright destroyed, turned into asteroid fields or molten wrecks by super weapons, it was the only way, the Voleant would not be allowed to return or survive and every hint of their existence was erased with fire and devastation as the CORE forces finished the task that had been set out the moment the Voleant had attacked their own worlds. After several weeks of clean up, the Voleant territories were clear, worlds turned barren now echoed with silence while others lay empty and scorched the Voleant had been exterminated and so CORE celebrated, the war was won.
Unbeknownst to them a single queen had been untouched by the genocidal campaigns, on the other side of the galaxy she had felt her sisters die and so had fled into hiding, there to try resurrect her people once again, the Voleant would continue to blight the denizens of the galaxy but never in the same way again.
